A Gift to Live By
John 8:10-11 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." We love gifts. We love to give em, and we especially love to get em. When we talk about gifts, we tend to center on those that are planned, packaged, wrapped, and given for a special occasions. No question; those are important gifts. The more abundant gifts are those that are found in the unprepared and the unplanned events of life. We find such a gift in a courtesy given. It is seen again and again. It is a door that is held, allowing you to pass easily. There is the driver that lets you into the line of pressing and busy traffic. You are lifted by the smile and word of encouragement from an overworked clerk. There are smiles, nods, simple greetings, and other ordinary actions. We may not even notice them all. Still, they are gifts. No matter how small they may seem, they are gifts that share what one person has by giving it to someone else. Perhaps the greatest gift that may be given to you is the opportunity to change your life for the better and forever. We tend to think that forgiveness is cheap. That means, we see it as nothing more than an quick statement of apology and a nod of passing. Real forgiveness is more. It is a vital gift of relationship. It is not just an answer to a prayer. It is the force that pulls you from your knees with the determination to be different and make a difference. As David said, Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. (Psalm 51:13). Jesus gave that woman (you and me as well) a gift to live by.

Listen to Your Mother

Surely all of us have received, or maybe even given, this piece of advice at some time. The reason that this advice is noteworthy is because most mothers desire the very best for their children, and the advice they give, generally speaking, is advice that if followed, will benefit their child. Well, if its a wise thing to listen to your mother, how much more so might it be to listen to the mother of Jesus? Today, most of what is said about Mary, the mother of Jesus, is fictional, rooted in the imagination of men. But there is trustworthy information about Mary, and that is contained in Scripture. In fact, Scripture records a piece of advice given by Mary, that I think is noteworthy. With reference to her Son, she said, Whatever He says to you, do it. I dont know of any better motherly advice youll ever hear. Though given roughly 2000 years ago, that motherly advice is just as relevant and wise today as it was when it was first spoken. So do yourself a favor and listen to your mother. But beyond that, you would do well if you would listen to His mother as well. Steve Higginbothamvia. MerceMail
