Description Anactivitytohelpstudentsorientthemselvesspatiallyandpractisethelanguageexpressing spatialrelationshipsanddirections,inpreparationforsampletasktype3. Timerequired: Additional materials required: 60minutes sampletask(3copiesforeachstudent) OHToflibraryplan OHTofroomsAI(orbothonthesameOHTwithapieceofblank papertocoveruptheroomlistatfirst) recordingoftapescriptforsampletask3(Youwillhavetomakethis recordingyourselforaskafriendorcolleaguetodoitforyou) Aims: topractisegivingandfollowingdirectionsandunderstandingspatial relationshipsinordertoraiseawarenessoftheskillsneededto completetasktype3andcompletingasampletask.

Procedure 1. Show the plan of the Town Library on an OHT to the whole class (cover up the optionsAIatthisstage).Askstudentswheretheythinkatourofthelibrarymight start. 2. Practisethebasiclanguageofdirectionswiththeclass(turnright,left,gostraighton, gothrough,gopast,opposite,etc)usingtheplan.Forexample,askstudentsforthe directionsfromtheentrancetotheseminarroom.Correctasnecessary. 3. Inpairs,studentspractisegivingandfollowingdirectionsusingthelibraryplantogo to the other labelled rooms: library office, fiction library area and nonfiction library area. 4. ShowthelistofroomsAIontheOHT(oruncoveritonthefirstOHT)andexplain thatsomeofthesewillbeusedontherecordingtolabelrooms1115andthatthey willfollowtheorderoftherecording. 5. Handoutthesampletasktohalfthestudents(StudentA)andaskthesestudentsto label the rooms in any order they like using the list of rooms A I. Hand out the sampletasktotherestofthestudents(StudentB).StudentAshouldgivesatourof thelibrarytoStudentB,usingthelanguagefromstep1.StudentBlistensandfillsin theirplanappropriately,thenshowstheirplantoStudentAtoseeifitiscorrect.Go roundtheclassandmonitorandtakenoteofanygoodexamplesoflanguageused. Handoutanothersetofthesampletaskstoallthestudentsandthestudentsrepeat withtheirrolesreversed.

Studentsnowdothesampletask3.Handoutanewcopyofthesampletasktoeach student. Explain that in the test candidates should write on the question paper but then transfer their answers to the answer sheet within the time allowed. Play the recording,stoppingafterthesentenceWell,asyouseemydeskisjustonyourright asyougoin.Askallthestudentstopointtowheretheycurrentlyareonthemapand checktheyareallorientedcorrectly.Thenplaytherecordingallthewaythrough. 8. Studentscheckinpairsbeforeawholeclasscheck.Ifnecessary,playtherecording afinaltime,pausingaftereachanswer. 9. Elicitfromstudentswhichtypeofvisualtheyhavebeenpractisingonhere(aplanof abuilding).Explaintostudentsthatthevisualinthistasktypemayalsobeadiagram (e.g.apieceofequipment),asetofpicturesoramap(e.g.ofpartofatown).It wouldbeagoodideatohavefurtherpracticewithpastpapertasksusingdifferent visuals,ifpossible.

SoI'dliketotellyouabitaboutthewaythelibraryisorganised,andwhatyou'llfindwhere andyoushouldallhaveaplaninfrontofyou.Well,asyouseemydeskisjustonyour rightasyougoin,andoppositethisthefirstroomonyourlefthasanexcellentcollectionof referencebooksandisalsoaplacewherepeoplecanreadorstudypeacefully.Justbeyond thelibrarian'sdeskontherightisaroomwherewehaveuptodateperiodicalssuchas newspapersandmagazinesandthisroomalsohasaphotocopierincaseyouwanttocopy anyofthearticles.Ifyoucarrystraightonyou'llcomeintoalargeroomandthisisthemain libraryarea.Thereisfictionintheshelvesontheleft,andnonfictionmaterialsonyourright, andontheshelvesonthefarwallthereisanexcellentcollectionofbooksrelatingtolocal history.We'rehopingtoaddasectiononlocaltouristattractionstoo,laterintheyear. Throughthefardoorinthelibraryjustpastthefictionshelvesisaseminarroom,andthat canbebookedformeetingsortalks,andnextdoortothatisthechildren'slibrary,whichhas agoodcollectionofstoriesandpicturebooksfortheunderelevens.Thenthere'salarge roomtotherightofthelibraryareathat'sthemultimediacollection,whereyoucanborrow videosandDVDsandsoon,andwealsohaveCDRomsyoucanborrowtouseonyour computerathome.Itwasoriginallytheartcollectionbutthat'sbeenmovedtoanother building.Andthat'saboutitoh,there'salsotheLibraryOffice,ontheleftofthelibrarian's desk.OK,nowdoesanyonehaveanyquestions?
