The Range
CROSS-FLOW TURBINE
Best suited for sites with low heads and high flows, such as old water mills. These operate with heads from 7 m to 60 m and effective flow rates ranging from 20 l/s to 800 l/s. They offer an excellent solution that reconciles quality, performance and price. The runner and mechanical parts are made of stainless steel. The transmission between runner and generator is by toothed belt which ensures the necessary flexibility of the system and minimises power losses. The flow rate is controlled by a special floodgate which allows variations from 0 to 100%.
PELTON TURBINE
Best suited for sites with low flows and high heads, such as mountain streams. These operate with heads from 20 m to 180 m and effective flow rates ranging from 0.5 l/s to 100 l/s. The buckets are made of precision cast stainless steel. All Compact Pelton turbines are fitted with six nozzles controlled by special flow regulation valves which help the efficiency of the system. The runner is directly splined onto the generator shaft, to give the most efficient system. All the main mechanical parts are manufactured in stainless steel.
RANGE CHART
To calculate the power output for your site you will need both head and flow data. By intersecting the X co-ordinate, which shows the head in metres, with the Y co-ordinate, which shows the flow in litres per second, the resulting point will be found between different diagonal sections indicating the electrical power generated, expressed in kW. The coloured areas highlight the possible operating points of the various standard models available.

Cross-flow
4 different sizes to suit a wide range of sites, Cross-flow turbine with manual and continuous flow regulation from 0 to 100%. Three/single-phase, synchronous, self-exciting, brushless generator, with 4 poles, 400/230 Volt, 50/60 Hz. Manual or actuated flow control. All stainless steel runner, open discharge. The various standard sizes offer a wide versatility, enabling application for many different uses with medium to low heads.
Turgo
2 sizes offering rugged efficient performance over a range of flows and heads. Three-phase, synchronous, self-exciting, brushless generator, with 2 poles, 415 Volt, 50 Hz. The runner is a one piece casting in aluminium bronze. Stainless steel spear valve and nozzle provide accurate flow control, which is fitted with a DC actuator to provided automatic control. Aluminium bronze runner mounted on Gilkes Bearing arrangement, toothed belt drive. Very good abrasion resistance, so ideal for run of river sites.
Control Panel
The Turbine Control Panels for grid connected or stand alone (islanded) applications. It supplies the necessary information about the operating conditions of the turbine and is equipped with instrumentation, alarm and protection devices.
Automatic or Manual operation G59 or G83 Compliant for grid connection Auto-Synchronisation Remote monitoring
Installation
Gilkes Engineers provide expert on-site installation and commissioning services. Our engineers provide the expertise to install, commission and start-up all the components of the equipment package following O&M procedures. Full training on site or at Gilkes factory can be provided.
COMPANY HISTORY
Formed in 1853 in the Lake District, Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Ltd was initially founded by 3 brothers from Kendal. They established an engineering equipment supply company.
The original premises were outside the town of Kendal, but, in 1856 the company moved to its existing location where it has been ever since. Gilkes Today
Since the first hydro turbine installation in 1856, Gilkes turbines have generated renewable energy in over 80 countries worldwide and continue to apply their years of engineering experience to improve and develop their range of Hydro, and Pumping solutions.
In 1856 the Inward Flow / Vortex reaction turbine was built, the drawing of which still exists today. A key installation for the Vortex turbine was for Sir William Armstrong to drive a Crompton dynamo to provide electric light for his house in Northumberland. This was the first private house in the UK to have hydroelectric powered lighting. In 1881 Gilbert Gilkes purchased the company and changed the name to Gilbert Gilkes & Co. The name changed once more in 1928 when the water power business of James Gordon and Co. was purchased creating the company name of today, Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, known more widely as Gilkes.
Gilkes now have offices in Kendal, USA and Japan and have 3 product ranges; Hydro Turbines, Industrial Pumps and Engine Cooling Pumps.
