SAMPLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE - MBA EXAMPLE ESSAY

MBA Write a candid description of yourself, stressing those personal qualities, assets, and liabilities that you feel will influence your graduate work. Describe what you consider to be your most important professional and / or academic achievement to date. If one were to ask my friends to describe me they would describe me as a very pleasant, diverse, active and intelligent woman. I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a science student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in management. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Engineering degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since civil designing involves a lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and the application of basic math skills. Over the past four years, I have been working part-time with my family firm, SnMTech Systems. I am also the co-founder and active member with FOE - Friends of the Environment. I have assisted in the installation of Enterprise-wide Resource Planning (ERP) System at Blotech, a major Engineering Company. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Utah University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of the software upgradation project that I managed at SnMTech Systems Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, where I have been working as a part time Associate Intern - Management Information Systems since 1994. During the first two years of my work at SnMTech, I had an opportunity to observe and work with the existing system being used. Some of the software packages being used were outdated versions. I have always been in touch with the latest software packages thanks to the powerful PC I have at home and am quite used to working with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. At the office, there was great deal of chaos while preparing reports that involved use of more than one software since compatibility between packages usually posed a problem. The difficulty we faced putting different files together led to the final report appearing rather haphazard sometimes. I believe in providing and maintaining non-negotiable high standards and service. I recognized that shifting to a newer GUI based software would not only dramatically improve our documentation quality, but also increase productivity at the workplace. Presenting the pros and cons to the management of the upgradation was a very challenging task. I was asked to prepare a proposal regarding the upgradation of the firm's software. Initially, I imagined this project would be rather simple but it turned out to be among the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. Through a firm-wide survey of operators and several one-on-one discussions of their own preferences and solutions, I found that while everybody wanted an upgradation, they had doubts since they would have to learn a whole set of new skills. In order to prepare a budget, I procured quotations from various vendors and analyzed possible combinations. I realized the necessity of a training course for the operators because most of them were not familiar with the GUI interface. I examined the various training classes that offered private in-house training for the employees.

After a detailed analysis, I presented my report to the management in the next meeting. They were pleased with my efforts and pleasantly surprised at the cost of the project since it seemed to be comparatively less than what they had anticipated. Once I was given the go-ahead, the next hurdle was to implement the proposal and coordinate the upgrading. To avoid any disturbance to the company's work, training sessions were planned after working hours. The upgrading took a week and the training of the operators took another two weeks. The really tough period started once the training personnel left. The management felt that it was my responsibility to see that the operators didn't face any problems once they actually started using the new software packages. I put in 60 to 70-hour weeks for the next three weeks before everyone was comfortable with the new system. While the benefits of using these packages were not immediately tangible, a few months later our clients acknowledged that the quality of the reports we sent them had improved considerably. In fact, a year later our firm decided to upgrade all of its software packages. I consider this to be a tacit compliment for my efforts. This project required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing the project to completion A good manager is one who can figure out where the problem lies, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problem I saw at SnMTech had to be resolved to sustain the company's image. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities.

Sample Business School / MBA Admissions Essay 1

I have been hoping and planning to earn an MBA for the past six years since graduating from college and am excited to now be on the cusp of making that dream a reality. Ive come a long way from the painfully shy college freshman who initially could hardly even stomach the thought of being a resident advisor because it would involve so much interaction with students I didnt yet know. I conquered those first fears and went on to become the Resident Hall Council President and Freshman Orientation Leader. My path hasnt always been easy, but through the challenges and goals I have set for myself I have grown into a confident, thoughtful, and respected leader at my workplace and in my personal life, and I know that these new skills will serve me well as I embark on this next scholastic challenge and the career I see before me post MBA. Ive chosen this specific MBA program because of its international focus, group work, and emphasis on learning foreign languages. I see this as perfectly instep with my goal of pursuing a career in management consulting. Over the past few years I have overcome my shyness in the

workplace and it is now commonplace for me to lead meetings and advise the CFO of the company I work for on the financial matters that are my sole responsibility and core strength. Continued group work with my fellow students from various backgrounds will serve to cement my new-found confidence in my own abilities and ideas. My interest in international business first sparked during my junior year abroad studying in Germany. This opportunity enabled me to learn written German fluently and, while I am proficient in the spoken language, I am eager to improve my accent, word choice, and confidence level to equal and surpass skills appropriate for daily business usage. Through this experience I was also fully immersed in the German culture and found this to be a very rewarding and educational experience and hope to have the opportunity to travel abroad again either while earning my MBA, or afterwards as a consultant. In this ever broadening global market place, I am aware of what an asset being multi-lingual is, and to that end I plan also to study Arabic, which will improve my marketability. If admitted to the program, I will bring with me my enthusiasm, dedication, and a stalwart work ethic. I am proud of what I have accomplished thus far in my life and see much of it as a stepping stone toward a successful future in the business world. I now need to expand my skill set beyond its current level and I see the curriculum offered at __________ University as the perfect way to do so.

In my experience one of the best places to learn true leadership skills is on the playing field. There are few situations in this world as intense, fraught with danger, and adrenalin inducing as participating in full-contact competitive sports. I have played soccer in a league for over years, and while this pastime is certainly not the focus of my life, the camaraderie and interpersonal skills I have learned from it will last me a lifetime. I am now positioning myself to apply to the MBA program at ____ university with an eye towards a career as a consultant and possibly, far down the road, a politician, and I feel confident that the skill set I have earned thus far through my academic, social, and career activities will serve me well as I learn the essentials of business. I was an economics major in college and learned a lot of essential business skills, and while my grades at this time in my life were not reflective of my abilities, my interest in the subject was genuine. At that time in my life I had not yet fully identified my career goals and was working to support myself, which put a considerable strain on my study time. After graduation however I entered the work force full-time as an Accountant Analyst at a large bank and realized the necessity of a solid educational background, both in practice and on paper. I made the decision to complete a professional designation in accounting and have succeeded in completing that goal with flying colors. It was an intensive 2 year process, and one that taught me no matter how much you put on your plate, if you are committed to achieving excellence in all of your duties, it is possibleyou just need to make the time. The program required the completion of many intensive group projects and my team and I were able to complete cases, write up management reports, and present them to a simulated board of directorsall of which has helped to build my confidence in my abilities and teach me that the benefits of team work in the business world are just as essential as team work on the soccer field. I am eager now to bring my leadership abilities, involved personality, and strong commitment to academic success to business school. I know that there is nothing I can not accomplish as long as I set my mind to it, and this next step is essential for me to realize my dreams for the future.

consider myself extremely fortunate to be here in the United States earning my education because I know how easy it would have been for this never to take place. Moving here all by myself from Shanghai to attend college was the most difficult thing I have ever done. I had never been away from my family before, I hadnt even traveled outside of China prior to this trip, and I knew I was in for a big change. At home I was known as a very social young woman; I was regularly elected to be the president of clubs, and I was an active sports participant, but once I

got to the US, I was so nervous about using my English, and so afraid that I would do or say something out of place in this unknown culture, that I became rather reclusive. I knew what I was doing was foolish: I was here to make new friends and learn about American culture as well as to study, so I forced myself to start socializing more. Fortunately my roommate was very helpful in making me feel more comfortable speaking English, and with her guidance and encouragement I started to branch out. I am still working on improving my English, but I now see it as a work in progress rather than something to be embarrassed about if I make a mistake. Now, when I hear words I dont know, I write them down to look up later and make myself use them in sentences when I get home so that everyday I feel myself becoming more confident. I have even found parttime work as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to the fulfillment I get from helping children learn, I find that it is very easy for me to work on my own language skills with them since I am very comfortable in their presence and they like to feel that they are teaching me something too. It has been a remarkable experience thus far and I can say that I have made some good new friends, and hope to make more before my studies are through, but perhaps the best part has been my new confidence in my abilities to succeed in this culture as well as my own. My grades have been excellent, and are evidence of my commitment to academics. I am now seeking a Masters degree in business because of my strong desire to go back to Shanghai armed with the necessary knowledge to grow my familys business. When I was growing up my parents were very poor and both worked in low paying positions, but they had a strong work ethic and an enterprising spirit which led them to start their own business. Through the years it has become profitable and I now hope that upon my return I will be able to move the company to the next level. Chinas future is bright and I hope to add to that luster with my hard won education. I know I wont be ready for that challenge without this next crucial achievement and if I am admitted to the program at ____ University I will work diligently to prove my abilities. I will also be able to offer a unique perspective to the class with my knowledge of Asian business practices

SAMPLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: MBA India is home to thousands of entrepreneurs. I want to be one of them. My country needs more skilled innovators who can create and launch cuttingedge products and services to keep India at the forefront of the technological tide. But we dont have many first rate entrepreneurial studies programs like those that have produced the top Silicon Valley leaders. XXXX University has exactly the kind of program I am seeking. The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies holds exciting events with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, offering networking opportunities and first hand experience that I plan to take full advantage of to extend my learning. Im also very excited by the Global Business Plan Competition. Your business incubator encourages students to launch their own businesses, something that I aspire to myself. I grew up in a family of medical practitioners. My parents are both doctors who hoped I might follow in their footsteps. Although I heard my parents wishes, business has always

fascinated me more than medicine. I have followed with great interest some of Indias pioneering business leaders such as XXXX and XXXX who created successful technology companies from scratch. I look forward to studying in the heart of Silicon Valley where many Indian-born entrepreneurs have launched start ups and others have opened U.S. offices of their India-based companies. If I were accepted by your program, I would aspire to pursue an internship such a company during the summers. Since I completed my studies at XXXX, where I focused my studies on finance and marketing, I have worked at two successful Mumbai software start ups, XX and XX, where I was responsible for marketing new products to local companies. There I learned what makes a young, ambitious company succeed and how to work with a team to develop innovative products. As I said, my future goal is to launch my own software company, and the best way to achieve that goal is to get an MBA with an entrepreneurial focus like your school offers. I am especially interested in studying with people like <NAME OF PROFESSOR> who teaches entrepreneurial studies. Also I look forward to learning from other students with entrepreneurial ambitions like mine. I believe my experience at XX and XX, coupled with the solid education I received at XX, will give me the grounding to excel in your program. I hope that the committee will look favorably on my application.
