GAY & LESBIAN LAWYERS NETWORK (GLLN) $1200 SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES
1. WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Students currently enrolled in a law school in Miami-Dade or Broward county are eligible to participate (Florida International University College of Law, Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, St. Thomas University School of Law, or University of Miami School of Law). 2. PURPOSE: To further The Florida Bar diversity goals to a) increase knowledge and awareness of diversity and cultural competency; b) Improve diversity in legal education, employment, the judiciary and The Florida Bar; and, c) Foster an inclusive environment in which lawyers, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability are motivated to succeed professionally and contribute to the goals of their profession. 3. ESSAY THEME: "How to Deal with Bullying, or How I have learned to survive as a Sexual Minority". 4. WORD LIMIT: Essays are to be between 1,000 and 1,200 typewritten words, double-spaced, single-sided, with no less than 14-point type, one-inch margins, pages numbered at the bottom. 5. PRIZE: The winner and runner-up will be selected by the GLLN Board of Directors, judged solely on originality, imagination, emotional impact and quality of writing. Winner will be awarded $1200, and must orally present their essay at GLLN luncheon in Fort Lauderdale, Thursday, March 7, 2013. Winner and runner-up will be honored VIP Guests and will each receive a recognition plaque at the 2nd Annual GLLN Fundraiser Gala, Sunday afternoon, April 21, 2013 in Oakland Park. Winning Essay will be submitted to The Florida Bar News for publication. 6. CERTIFICATION: Contestants shall certify that they alone wrote their Essay. 7. DEADLINE: Essays must be postmarked not earlier than January 26, 2013 nor later than February 2, 2013, addressed to GLLN Essay Contest, 2301 Wilton Dr, Suite 3, Wilton Manors, FL 33305 by U.S. mail (no other delivery will be accepted). Winner and runner-up will be notified by March 1, 2013. 8. BLIND SUBMISSION: Essays shall not contain contestant's name or law school. The contestant shall create a 9-digit number and place the number on the upper- right hand corner of each page of essay. The essay shall be sealed inside a blank unmarked envelope. That envelope and an application form including contestants name, address and 9-digit number will be mailed, inside mailing envelope. The Florida Bar provided partial funding for this project.
