Evaluating Student Thinking

Formative assessment in a digital world. Will email notes. Students get by by doing the least amount of work to get an a or b; we have to get them to think critically and go beyond simply performing. Environment is important for harvesting and fostering students who are free to give and share information. The goals are to discover unique contributions, misconceptions and understand student styles. Got great handout on voice thread. Assess understanding and knowledge prior to teaching concepts. Have students make a list of questions per topic then design a lesson around it. tools4teachingscience.org try Linlot instead of wallis her for instant feedback (can't find but if you do please correct) Avoid making references to the future how this knowledge will applicable to them becaus developmentally that stage is not developed. Ask them to make applications to things around them. next vista for learning - Rushton Hurley's video resource site google search story for students to cite their sources visible tweets - very cool Google earth- architectural and geographical characteristics. Compare ancient Rome layer with museo del prado. Art layer. Masterpiece option, choose photo. Ultra high resolution, zoom in, zoom in, zoom in. To even see the tears in the eyes of a subject. addiction to comfort keeps us from doing what we need to do button theory: kids push button to see what it will do; teachers want to know what button will do before pushing it - let's try to balance these two Advice: develop an exploratory culture, channel inspiration, talk with students, create time, spend wisely whatisyoureduwin.com - share edu win via twitter curriki.org, lessonopoly.org, Mediasnackers.com, Rockourworld.org use advanced search on google - can search for specific file type (i.e. find a PDF handout on a topic you're teaching - don't reinvent the wheel) krauseinnovationcenter.org - MERIT program If technology doesn't work for you, then you are one of everybody. Quick notes for whole staff. Let the teachers who used it share it to those that are interested in their own time.

inform the teachers to use today connections around them to help understand the concepts.

This is the next up and coming thing in our district. South Newton already has 18 nooks and we are still working out the kinks. Lots of logistics to put in place - soon. cheaper, more functional, easily accessible from online account log-in and no out of date textbooks.

Stand Back!! we're using Discovery Education

Mode for using digital textbooks. You purchase a set number of user log-ins and then any update to the book is free. Also if you change the from lets say 100 semester one semester/year and then you need the next semester/year you need 120, they give you the 20 needed free. the books range from 35 to 45 dollars per log-in, but would be very beneficial purely for e updates. They offer interactive options as well, a visual glossary with a movie in addition to the definition. There are also and read aloud option where you can read the entire passage or just hi lighted aspects.

from A to Z digital portfolios with mobile devices Presentation Design Ken Shelton tinyurl.com/digp ortfolios wordpress tumblr evernote We used to primarily communicate visually and have since lost our desire for the visual. Great points and examples on the power of images. Our message can be communicated more efficiently and effectively with visuals. Image relevance = Does the image related to the message being shared? Why do some presenters read the slides from the screen to the audience? You cannot do two cognitive tasks at the same time (eg. try to spell jewelry out loud and write your full name). Are we so used to "death by powerpoint" that we see it as normal? Don McMillan: Life After Death by Powerpoint (youtube) Your eyes are your most dominant sense. We process color differently than b&w (eg. compare two prints, one color, the other b&w - Which one do we see first?) Together images and color can also invoke a variety of emotions Images evoke Direct representation, indirect representation and abstract levels of meaning - can text do that? Simplicity is the ulitmate sophistication (- Da Vinci) Make it solid, make it work. If you can, always full bleed your images (takes up the entire slide) Great example of a water presentation with very little text You have the power to take a different path - it takes practice (and patience) Key things to remember: 1) Effective presentations are also good stories, 2) Put yourself in the position of your audience - know your audience, 3) There are no rules, the only advice: dont use that much text and good high res visuals, 4) Centralize around a common theme / point Great fonts to use: Baskerville, Bodini, Franklin Gothic, Futura, Gill Sans, Optima, Rockwell Why not comic sans? Originally developed for comic books and people with dyslexia. Now used for 5th grade students and lower. (Check out: comicsanscriminal.com) The font you choose says a lot about you. Image sources: wikimedia commons, stock.xchng, flickr, morguefile, PDPhoto.org Default 800x600 pixels for powerpoint slide Use your own images whenever possible - build your own stock photo library Photo365 - a daily photo journal used over the course of a year The creative process is therapeutic. Develop a color theme/scheme (web sites: Color Lovers, Color Scheme Designer, Kuler) Publishing your presentations (slideshare, 280 slides, authorStream, Google docs) Never discourage anyone... who continually makes progress, no matter how slow. What are presentations designed for? Communication. Presentation software is not documentation software! Don't give a print out of your entire presentation. Don't diminish your gifts and abilities. Effective presentations are also good stories. We all have stories. Good stories are in our DNA. Put yourself in the position of your audience. That is like a writing a love letter to whom it may concern. go to nclearns website

Tips for good project based learning activities are as follows: real work problem, ties as many content areas as possible, have artifacts and collaborate. Good place to look for ideas: www.globalschoolnet.org, iEarncollaborationcenter.com How to create an authentic PBL: 1.) begin with the end in mind: 2.) review the steps in planning a project 3.) plan the assessment 4.) map the project 5.) manage the process (what do students do, during and after) Research shows: application, retention, building collaborative skills, higher and students are more hands on. It drives challenges or questions, a need to know, is innovative and inquiry, product, inventive and collaborative.

So You Want to Start a Twitter Account

@web20classroom Twitter is like Microblogging Focus on learning and sharing Not two way like FB DM only works if both are following Like this...for PD for beginners shows how to use Twitter BEFORE he lets them sign up Don't pick a long user name. It will use too many of your 140 characters. Hatch out of the egg...change the egg picture that they give you to begin with. Your twitter account has to have a purpose (that can change). Decide who is in charge of the account. Tweeter of the day helper for student helper for class account. You can schedule tweets. General social media permission slip for schools. School/district does not need to follow anyone back. Teachers are strongly discouraged to exchange in DM with students. Twitter was not appropriate place for angry parents conversations. Promotes engagement even if it is "I am sorry you feel that way. Here is who you contact." Leads to conversations about digital Footprints

Twitter offers a level of customer service. Search.twitter.com can be used to look for tweets without an account. Use search to follow current events in real time Use lists to organize people Twitter debates as George Washington Tweet a story each one taking a turn adding it on Tweeting out positive stuff going on in the school Tweet what is right with schools and/or communication tool Edmodo and twitter together...coming soon Not narcissism it is cultivating relationships. Twitterfall - visualizations. Wiffiti - visualizations Tweet deck organizes the tweets and separate them. Hoot suite browser based. Tweetchat.com for following a conversation in twitter. What is twitter? Microbloggin 140 characters or less Not about narcissim What's important to your world Not a 2-way relationship--but it can be Terminology tweet-- what goes in the box Retweet-- passing along info Kinda like copy and paste Mention-- @ symbol in front of username A tweet containing a mention will be seen by you Conversation Direct message/DMV-- private message between 2 people each have to follow each other Hash tag/#-- a way to track conversations or follow tweets Anyone can create them Essential for use in the classroom/ school/ district Getting started Free Can only have 1 email account associated with an account Choose your name wisely Shorter the better Picture or avatar-- need to do this Profile-- what do you want people to know about you...can put in links Things to consider What do you want to do with this account? What will the purpose be? What do you want to create?

Who will be in charge? 1 person vs. multiple people Who will have access and when? Will kids be allowed to tweet from here? Idea-- twitterer of the day Who will you follow? Anyone or no one Do you need too? Interactions If someone mentions you, how do you respond? What level of engagement do you want to have? What if it is negative? Classroom Interventions That Rescue the Discouraged Learner 3pu5hr Discouraged/ disengage child: lacks confidence, feels hopeless, chooses to fail because of low self confidence. Drop out. Fragile home. Don't see relationship between effort and achievement. Especially long term. They need: competence, belonging, usefulness, potency, optimism. Competence: no judgement, they teach me, they can find the answer, it is their world, the computer is patient, empowers them, immediate feedback. Writing with word processor, don't worry about penmanship, easy editing, easy revision, no judgement, no holes in the paper from erasing too much, spell check. Belonging: project based learning, collaboration, what you contribute is valuable, Usefulness: contributing to the group, different skills are needed, publishing tools Potency: proximal goals, learning strategies, and successful experiences. Social media, gaming, tweeting to parents about what they did today in first grade. Then comes optimism. Blogging-not getting negative feedback. Completed project. Opportunity to correct and peer reviews. Before I can rescue them, I need to figure out where I am. Where am I at and how does it color the way I look at students? What happens when you get to students that you aren't like you? Make a conscious effort to find something to like. There are natural biases. No one can legislate how i feel. I am the only one who can make a change. Be aware of it. Be aware of all statements in my life.
