Absolute Maximum Ratings

Stresses in excess of the absolute maximum ratings can cause permanent damage to the device. These are absolute stress ratings only. Functional operation of the device is not implied at these or any other conditions in excess of those given in the operations sections of the data sheet. Exposure to absolute maximum ratings for extended periods can adversely affect device reliability. Both input voltages of 5 V or 12 V nominal (VIN), and bias voltages of 10.4 V 13.2 V (VCC1) and 4.75 V 5.25 V (VCC2) must be present to operate the module. One of the bias voltages must be tied to the input voltage of the same value: if VIN = 5 V, then VCC2 is tied to VIN; if VIN = 12 V, then VCC1 is tied to VIN. Table 1. Feature Descriptions
Static Voltage Regulation
The output voltage measured at the converter output pins on the system board will be within the range shown in Table 3, except for input voltage turn-on and turn-off. The static limits apply to ambient temperatures between 0 C and 70 C. Static voltage regulation includes: DC output initial voltage and set point adjust Output load ranges specified in tables above Temperature and warm-up input voltage tolerances specified in input voltage and current

Turn-on Response Time

The output voltage will be within the specified range within 10 ms of the module input voltage reaching 90% of its nominal value and OUTEN active. When OUTEN is applied after application of input voltage, the output voltage will be within its specified range within 10 ms of OUTEN application (see typical turn-on waveforms, Figures 1 and 2).

Figure 1. Turn-on Waveforms: VIN = 12 V, VOUT = 1.3 V, 16 A resistive load + 4000 F

Figure 2. Turn-on Waveforms: VIN = 5 V, VOUT = 3.5 V, 16 A resistive load + 8000 F

Overshoot at Turn-on or Turn-off

Overshoot upon the application or removal of the input voltage or for application or removal of the OUTEN signal must be less than 10% above the initial set output voltage. No negative voltage can be present on the output during turn-on or turn-off.

Power Good Output PGOOD

An open collector signal consistent with TTL dc specifications and 5 mA sink current capability is provided. This signal transitions to the open (< 100 k) state within 10 ms of the input stabilizing within the range specified, or within 10 ms after the OUTEN signal is applied when the input voltage is already present. The signal is in the low impedance (to ground) state whenever VOUT is more than 10% from nominal and in the open state whenever VOUT is within its specified range.

Voltage Identification VID [4:0]

The module (Master only) accepts five TTL compatible logic-level VID signals that are used to set the voltage required by the load as defined in Table 6. The VID input is considered logic 1 if the voltage at this input is above 2.0 V, and logic 0 if this voltage is less than 0.8 V. Source current of these inputs is 10 A, so the maximum resistance from VID inputs to ground is 50 k to still insure 0 logic level. NOTE: VID code must be set before application of VIN, VCC1 or VCC2 voltages. Changes to VID code with power applied to either input may cause unpredictable behavior, e.g. toggling the PGOOD signal and activating the overvoltage protection. Also, VID inputs must not be pulled up to VCC1. Table 6. Voltage Identification Code VID Pins 0 = Connected to VOUT 1 = Open or Pull-up to VCC2 VID4

Output Overvoltage Protection

Protection level: The converter provides overvoltage protection by latching off when the output voltage rises beyond Vtrip. Vtrip is between 115% and 120% of the nominal output voltage (as set by the VID pins).

Overvoltage protection circuit protects against shorted feedback/sense connections. Voltage sequencing: No allowed variation of input voltages, output current or control signals will falsely trigger an OVP event or damage the module.

Reset After Shutdown

If the module goes into an overvoltage shutdown state, the module will not return to normal operation after the fault has been removed. Input bias (VCC1) must be cycled to reset the converter.

Output Overcurrent Protection

Current overload is defined as a 30% load over maximum output current up to a dead short. The module will shut down until the overload is removed and then will automatically restart. It is capable of sustaining a continuous overload without damage or overstress to the circuit. Optional latching overcurrent protection is available (see Ordering Information). With this option, the module will not return to normal operation after the fault has been removed. Input bias (VCC1) must be cycled to reset the module.

Overtemperature Protection
The module is protected against failure from overtemperature conditions created by high ambient temperature, or by airflow which is less than the specified minimum requirements. It will either operate properly within the requirements or shut down (nonlatching). The module will function as specified under overtemperature conditions until disabled (nonlatching) by the protection circuit.

Remote Sense
The remote sense inputs (VOUTSEN+ and VOUTSEN-) should be connected to the load using separate sense traces on the system board. Remote sense can compensate for the total output voltage drop not more than 15% of the nominal output voltage, otherwise the overvoltage protection will activate. In the event of an open remote sense line, the module will maintain local sense regulation through 10 internal resistors to output terminals. NOTE: Resistance in sense traces can result in regulation error due to voltage drop in those traces.

Complies with the limits of FCC Part 15 Class B and VDE 243 Level B for radiated emissions 15 kV initialization level per specification number EN61000-3-2. The direct ESD event shall cause no out-of-regulation conditions. (Includes overshoot, undershoot, and nuisance trips of the overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, or remote shutdown circuitry.) 25 kV initialization level

Parallel Operation
To enhance the output current capability of the single module (Figure 35), parallel operation of the modules is possible (Figure 36), in a synchronized MasterSlave configuration; one Master can control up to three Slaves. In that case, maximum static output current, as well as maximum IOUT slew rate, is multiplied by the total number of modules, without degrading other electrical characteristics. For example, one Master plus three Slaves can supply four times more current than a single Master alone, and the dIOUT/dt of the dynamic load current can be four times greater (Figures 37 and 38). Modules share the output current within 10 %. To ensure proper static and transient characteristics and low interconnection resistance and inductance, modules must be placed next to each other (Figure 36), and Master should be closest to the load. For proper cooling and unobstructed airflow, a realistic spacing of 0.6 is recommended between pins #1 of the Master and the Slave (and also Slave to Slave) connectors, which will result in about 0.3 between modules. Interconnection between Master and Slave(s) is shown in Figure 39.
