OPTION B IMAGINATIVE COMPOSITION (Colour MUST be used) Attempt ONE of the following questions Use any medium or combination

of media. (Paints MUST be quick-drying). Any style may be used. 1. Playing 2. Help! Help! 3. Landscape with Animals 4. Paradise From the list of alternatives, the candidate chose the theme Playing. Below is a picture of the work (click on the thumbnail for full image).

What are some of the things the candidate would have thought about prior to creating this work of art? Medium The work should be done in a dry colour medium, pastels. It should also be created on coloured paper. Theme - How can I represent the theme, Playing? I think I will use three musicians playing instruments, I dont want them to be realistic and I dont want them to be conventional. I dont want them lined up on a stage as that might be too traditional and maybe uninteresting. I think I will stylise the figures and the instruments. I will select instruments that have a Caribbean flair such as the guitar, keyboard and the drum. I will use lines to suggest movement and create unity as well as contrasts with the use of colour. Because I do not want the figures or the instruments to be realistic, I will exaggerate the sizes and shapes used to create variety and movement. I will use wavy lines to create movement, because, when I think about the work as Playing, it means that they must be doing something so I must create action.

What did the examiners think about in deciding on a grade for the work? Let us look at Craftsmanship:

The candidate has chosen an appropriate medium in which to work. He/she has really good control of the pastels that were used. They were blended well and there seemed to be a good understanding of how to fill the shapes with colour. The material (pastel) used is appropriate as the question suggests that colour must be used. It is also suitable for the task. The figures and instruments are stylised and graphic formations/drawings have been executed well. We need to look at the quality of design and composition expressed in the work. We like how the candidate used colours. The shapes are done in analogous tones within the blue, green and purple range, so they provide harmony in the work. The colours in the lines are also analogous as they fall within the yellowgold, orange and red scheme. The colours in the lines are complementary to the colours in the shapes. Complementary colours stand out brightest when placed side by side, so the manner in which colours are put next to each other or juxtaposed, creates an effective contrast. Lines are expressed in a very interesting way. The directions, in which the wavy lines move, help to animate the work, hence creating action or movement. The balance used is asymmetrical, this also creates variety. The lines link the shapes of the figures with the instruments which provide unity in the composition. The composition is well balanced as it is well positioned on the picture plane. The shape and pattern/repetition created by the keyboard, make it the focal point of the work. The hands are exaggerated, and this not only suggests movement but also creates emphasis. Lets not forget Originality: There was successful experimentation with colour mixing as the candidate explored the medium. The way in which the candidate interpreted the theme was quite unique, so we think the work rates very high in the area of Originality. Final assessment of work After looking at the competence displayed in the use of the medium, the skills displayed in drawing, the comprehensive understanding of the use of design elements and principles (underlined above), as well as the originality expressed in the conceptualising of the work, we think this candidate deserves a Grade A.

CONCLUSION
Now ask yourself these questions. Did you give the work the same grade?

What were your reasons? Did they coincide with those of the external examiners? How did the candidates thought process contribute to the success of the work? If you had to do this question, how would you approach it? Make a list of the things you have learnt from doing this exercise. If you are a student, make a list of questions that you would like to ask your teacher about this work.
