Feature: 2012 Year-End Review DC Comics

Following last years introduction of the New 52, DC Comics focused on worldbuilding in 2012. The purpose is to show how characters interact with one another in a shared universe which included the Night of the Owls event and the Green Lantern event Rise of the Third Army. The Night of Owls is the first major crossover of The New 52 and offers a great way to sample the other Batman books as the writers and artists are in their second story arcs. The second major crossover of The New 52 following The Night of the Owls is Green Lanterns Rise of the Third Army. Over a year has passed since the New 52 books were first released. Dan DiDio promises they will slowly roll out new and old characters slowly like Wally West, Ralph and Sue Dibny. When DC Comics began 2012, it finished some of their first story arcs for the New 52 while soliciting the final trade paperbacks from the Pre-Flashpoint Era. The New 52 attempts to use various official and unofficial crossovers between issues to solidify the DC Universe. DC Comics wants a shared universe however crams too much in making it more complicated than it needs to be. DC Comics releases their collections of Flashpoint crossovers however the point seems mute as none of those stories actually matter due to the new 52. Stories that have carried over from the Pre-Flashpoint Era, seem to be doing well as they have a strong foundation to build there characters including Batman and Green Lantern. Some of the best writers have told the best stories with the DC characters. Now a new generation of writers must be as good or better to be relatable to a new generation of comic fans who are smarter readers.

Marvel Comics
Last year DC Comics introduced their New 52 which relaunched all their titles with new #1 issues all in one month. After Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel Comics followed suit with Marvel Now! releasing their titles with new #1 issues over a five month period ending February 2013. Avengers vs. X-Men wraps up nine years of stories beginning with Avengers: Disassembled and bringing both the House of M and Messiah CompleX to a close. Marvel Now! will kick off the next decade of stories. Unlike DC Comics The New 52, Marvel NOW! builds on previously established continuity to serve both existing and potential new readers. Some of the changes include team rosters, costumes, and increasing shipping schedules. This bi-weekly Avengers title by Jonathan Hickman in December, AllNew X-Men by Brain Michael Bendis in November, and Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender which includes members from both the Fantastic Four and the XMen. The Uncanny Avengers is the direct response of Avengers vs. X-Men bringing some heavy mutant hitters to the team including Cyclops, Cable, and Wolverine. However the majority of these titles have been a jumping-off point rather than a jumping-on point. The first event of the Marvel Now! is Age of Ultron which seems to be more art than story. Ultimately Ultron will be defeated by the Marvel heroes however its writer Brian Michael Bendis teases a surprise at the end. It may be better to just wait for the surprise rather than investing in the event to occur.
