MEX 3174 Principles of Design ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012 Assignment # 1


INSTRUCTIONS 1. This Assignment is based on course material in Book 01. 2. Answer all four (04) questions. 3. Write your registration number clearly on your answer script. 4. Send your answer scripts under registered cover to the address given below or put it into the assignment box available at the Mechanical Engineering Department (Block 17). Question 01 a. In the history, there has not been any exclusive class of persons regarded as Designers. Many complex, functional and beautiful artifacts have been created without consciously designing them. Discuss the content of the above paragraph; quoting examples from the history. Distinguish the manufacturing approach adopted in the past from that at present. b. Select an appropriate domestic appliance and explain its evolution over the time.

Question 02 a. How do you identify /define a society?

b. Technology can change the society. Explain your opinion using appropriate examples. c. Consider a latest engineering product and explain the factors that the designer has considered related to environment, ergonomics, sustainability and economics.

Question 03 a. Different individuals have defined Engineering Design in different manner. Clearly defined Engineering Design from your point of view, with a brief explanation to support your definition. b. Clarifying objectives of a design activity is very important for a designer. Why is it so? c. State clearly, why economic considerations are important in an engineering design. Explain your answer with an example. Briefly discuss the impact of economic considerations on the design process and final product.

Question 04 Answer the following. i. ii. Explain the term Design for s ustainability. Whole building design not only looks at how materials, systems and products of a building connect and overlap, but also looks at how the building and its systems can be integrated with supporting systems on its site and its community. List five such supporting systems which should be considered related to the site and to the local community. iii. iv. Importance of Ergonomic consideration in modern engineering designs. People have always designed things and even animals make things to fulfill basic needs. Distinguish design by humans and design by other animal in the context of evolution and development of the design process.

Question 05 Explain the holistic design approach. Also explain briefly the factors to be considered in holistic design. Note: You may quote a appropriate example to clarify your answer.
