New Years A Plan for Success

By Lisa yako resolution [rez-uh-loo-shuh n] NounA firm decision to do or not to do something. According to Forbes.com, nearly 40% of Americans make New Years resolutions, but only about 8% achieve their goals. Why are Americans so bent on making resolutions that they are unlikely to achieve? Making a resolution to improve your health by losing weight, eating a healthier diet, exercising more, or resolving to get out of debt are noble goals, but it takes more than a resolve to achieve success. This New Year, resolve to set small goals for yourself, and dont expect to run if you are never willing to get up on your feet. If your resolution is to lose weight, start small by simply eating a little bit less each day. Food should be viewed as fuel for your body. Just as you would not want to put bad gasoline into your car, your mindset should be the same as applied to your body. Begin by planning your meals and your snacks each day so you will be less likely to eat poorly. Planning meals takes time, but you will not be faced with the question of what to make for dinner each night and you will have all of the ingredients necessary for a healthy meal. You will also save money by having what you need on-hand and will be less likely to eat out. Do not get discouraged if your weight loss is a slow process. According to LiveStrong.com, the best rate of weight loss is 1-2 lb. per week. Losing more weight than that increases the chances you will gain it. Further, In order to lose 1 to 2 lb. a week, you have to reduce your caloric intake by 5001,000 calories a day. To put this into perspective, a one-ounce serving of potato chips (but really, who only eats one ounce of potato chips!) has about 155 calories, and one chocolate chip cookie contains about 105 calories. If you try to cut out these snacks or just reduce how much you eat, you can achieve the goal of reducing your intake by 500-1,000 calories. If your resolution is to start exercising, do not expect to run a 5-K on your first time hitting the road. Start by walking for 15 minutes three times per week, and then slowly increase your frequency and length of your walk. Once you have achieved this discipline, consider increasing the intensity of your workout. This might include joining a gym or setting a goal to walk/run that 5-K next summer. Even if you are unable to do any exercise other than walking, the Mayo Clinics web site states Walking can help you: lower LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), raise HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol), lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes, manage your weight, improve your mood, and stay strong and fit. In addition, Research shows that regular, brisk walking can reduce the risk of heart attack by the same amount as more vigorous exercise, such as jogging. If you resolution is to get out of debt, change the way you spend the money you have. This can be done in a myriad of ways. Here just a few suggestions. 1. Live within your means! If you spend less than you make, debt will not be a problem. Create a budget to track your expenses, or write down how you spend each penny over a week or month so you get an idea of where you save. 2. Lower your thermostat a few degrees. This will not only help you save money on your heating bill, but might also help you lose weight (see http:// well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/26/centralheating-may-be-making-us-fat/) and feel better in general. 3. Use coupons everywhere. The Sunday newspaper is not the only place to acquire coupons any more. Stores like Meijer offer online coupons. Also, plan your buying. Stores often put items on sale that are featured in the Sunday coupon section. 4. Do not use a credit card unless you can pay the balance in full each month. After paying the interest rate on most credit cards, you end up paying substantially more for that item that was such a good deal. To achieve any of your resolutions, you will have greater success if you use the buddy system. For example, you will be more likely to lose weight if the other members of the household do not insist on having ice cream in the house. Likely, your whole family could benefit from your resolution. If you and your spouse or you and a friend both resolve to exercise, you will be less likely to skip a walk. This is also a great way to catch up with friends. Whatever your resolution, you will feel better about yourself and have a more positive outlook for 2013 if you achieve your goals. Just be sure your goals are reasonable!

Enrich your life: become a stein hospice volunteer

Retired teachers Carol Kegarise and Kathy Preston were looking for a meaningful way to spend their free time. They found that, and much more, when they joined Stein Hospice as a volunteer. Consider starting the New Year by joining these two women and dozens of other men and women who donate their time and talent to Stein Hospice. Two LifeCourse training classes begin in January, 2013. (See below.) Volunteer department staff works closely with volunteers to find an assignment that fits their schedule and preference. Carol joined Stein Hospice three years ago after the sudden death of her husband. Kathy followed a year and a half later. Both women expressed interest in visiting patients at both the Care Center and at nursing facilities near their homes. Their responsibilities and tasks vary. The two women listen to patients talk about their families, lifes milestones and thoughts about dying. They help patients with meals, and make sure families are comfortable. They load the dishwasher and stock the linen closet. And every Monday morning the two women volunteer together at the Care Center. As a result they have become good friends. Volunteers are so nurturing and selfless and positive. What better friendship can you make than that? Kathy said. LifeCourse an 18-hour training , program, will be offered at the following times: Firelands Regional Medical Center, South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23; Fremont Recreation Center, 600 St. Joseph St., Fremont, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Jan. 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 24. To register contact the Volunteer Department, 800-625-5269. volunteers@steinhospice.org.

Tigers Defeat Struggling Skins, 62 - 45

Huron Bowl a-Thon

The Huron High School and Middle School held their third annual bowl-athon at Riverview Lanes on December 8th. The bowl-a-thon is held to help defray the costs of the bowling program. The team went out and asked for pledges either per pin or straight donations. The bowl-a-thon included bowling as well as raffles of prize packages from various businesses from the area.It was a success and the bowlers and parents would like to thank everyone responsible for putting it together and they would also like to thank the sponsors for helping make this a fun and productive event.

Lorain County Community College President Dr. Roy Church addressing the attendees

The Huron varsity boys squad hosted the very young Port Clinton varsity team this past week following the Christmas holiday. Over the course of the game, the Tigers maintained a consistent offensive pace to collect the 62-45 SBC victory. Huron played well defensively, forcing Port Clintons guards to settle for three pointers. Early on, they hit those to stay within striking range, but eventually they turned cold. During the third period, the home team outscored the Redskins 17 - 8 to securely put the game out of reach. Center Aaron Casey led the Tigers with 17 points including an impressive break away dunk in the first half. Aaron Driftmeyer contributed 14 points while celebrating his 18th birthday that evening. Top Left: Aaron Casey makes his point with a strong, breakaway dunk. Top Right: Guard Cody Thompson caps the fast break with a flashy no-look assist. Above: Colin McCready, shown here driving to the basket, scores nine points during the Tiger victory.

Off To A Bright Future

EHOVE Adult Career Center is proud to announce that the students in its first Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) class have completed their training. They may now take the National Certification Examination for Ohio Licensure. Although the students attended their training at EHOVE Adult Career Center, they will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree through Lorain County Community College (LCCC). Occupational therapists help people of all ages gain skills needed to take part in meaningful daily activities. Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) work in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient programs. They are part of the team of professionals, including working with occupational therapists. Since the students wont experience their graduation ceremony with LCCC until May, EHOVE held a recognition reception on December 14 to acknowledge their milestone of completing their training. Keynote Speaker Dan Wilkins, Director of Public Relations at The Abilities Center in Toledo gave an uplifting address drawn from his personal experiences with an accident and aftercare. Graduates: Kimberly Millis (Sandusky), Dora Sword (Wadsworth), Mary Rollins (N. Olmstead), Dean Caley (Amherst), Aprl Haftner (Attica), Sue Shultz (Vermilion), Carroll Camp (Vermilion), Brent Deberry (Wakeman), Amee Meyer (Sandusky), Ray LaMarca (Sandusky), Kari Fink (Huron), Laura Oliver (Sandusky), Stephanie Kelley (Elyria), Sue Machovina (Huron), Gladys Hauler (Monroeville), Sue Mollica (Wellington), Beth Bartlett (Norwalk), Megan Slone (Willard), Cindy Turton (Berlin Heights), Izabela Marten (Sandusky), Jose Sanchez (Sandusky), Carly Marzec (Sandusky), and Kathy Kaman (Castalia). Student Cindy Turton became the first recipient of the newly created Meinen Award. EHOVE Adult Career Centers Service Professions Department Coordinator Sandy Meinen inspired the creation of the award by other staff because of her dedication and commitment to helping this new program at EHOVE become a success. The award is meant for a student who has been an exceptional example through hard work, attitude and growth. The creation of the award was unveiled at the ceremony, surprising both Meinen and the recipient, Turton, who plans to work with special needs kids in her new career. Im very honored to receive this award, said Turton. Getting a college degree was on my bucket list. I felt I could do more by completing this particular program. It was accessible and affordable, and it brought me so much. Meinen and recently retired Adult Education Director Viki Kaszonyi partnered with EHOVE staff and instructors and LCCC administration to create the unique partnership between the schools and the program itself. We love to work with EHOVE to expand education opportunities for folks across our communities, said Lorain County Community College President Dr. Roy Church in his address to the students and reception attendees. Church also said he believes similar partnerships in other training programs are a possibility as well. The EHOVE/LCCC OTA training is a 24 month program which includes 16 weeks of full-time field work in two different settings at the end of the program. The program requires coursework in Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, Sociology and others; in addition to the OT courses. Admission to the program is competitive with the program accepting 25 students each year
