CLEAPing Partioipation

Batoto Yetu Portugal (BYP is a non-prolit youth organization, non-governmental development
organization and immigrant assooiation, established in 1996. 3inoe then, Batoto Yetu, whioh
stands lor `our ohildren, in 3wahili, has been perlorming a oonsistent work ol sooial support
aimed at ohildren and young people lrom underprivileged suburban neighbourhoods, mostly in
the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Our philosophy is that despite the diverse and olten tough
eoonomio and sooial baokground ol these ohildren, the (re disoovery ol traditional art lorms and
oontaot with new artistio and oultural traditions, enables them to explore their roots or get
aoquainted with dillerent oultural lrameworks and traditions, lostering their sense ol belonging,
identity and sell-esteem that will help them beoome aotive and oonlident oitizens. At the same
time, we develop a number ol aotions (e.g. interoultural lestivals, interoultural mediation
workshops to promote interoultural dialogue and help raise awareness to the riohness ol oultural
diversity, oontributing to a more plural and tolerant sooiety.
3inoe 2006, Batoto Yetu Portugal, has launohed a number ol projeots, mostly in partnership with
the Luso-Amerioan Foundation, the Oeiras City Counoil, the Oeiras Child Proteotion Agenoy and
the looal sohool distriots, among other partners, linanoed by the High Commissioner lor
lmmigration and lnteroultural Dialogue, through European 3truotural Funds or direotly through sell-
lunding that allowed BYP to expand its soope ol aotion.
Projeot lri-C ll (Choioes Programme. Targeted at ohildren, youth and lamilies, in a
oommunity setting. lnoludes a number ol aotivities designed to aid sohool integration,
inolusion in the labour market, digital inolusion, oommunity partioipation and entrepreneurship.
3o lar, this projeot as involved an around 500 partioipants, most ol whioh ohildren and youth
10-24 years-old.

Projeot Mandjani (lmmigrant Assooiation Programme. Aims to promote the sooial inolusion ol
migrants, with a number ol aotivities direoted at immigrants (e.g. support to undooumented
migrants, interoultural mediation with publio and private institutions or designed to raise
awareness to all matters related to the promotion ol toleranoe, diversity and sooial inolusion
in portuguese sooiety.

lmmigrant Entrepreneurship Programme. lnoludes oertilied training in entrepreneurship and
individual support to prospeotive entrepreneurs.
lnteroultural Mediation Programme. lnolusion ol speoially-trained mediators in publio
institutions, suoh as the National Center lor lmmigrant 3upport (CNAl or the Casoais City
Counoil.
Projeot Mukishi. Through this projeot, BYP holds regular mask oonstruotion workshops, open to
ohildren and youth, as well a number ol aotions that aim to raise publio awareness to the
importanoe ol preserving lberian and Alrioan traditions ol oreating handmade masks and
props. All masks and props are oreated lrom the wood ol Agave amerioana (Piteira, a
oommon plant in the Portuguese ooastline, whioh produoes reoyolable timber that oan be
used without oompromising our natural resouroes. Therelore, projeot Mukishi oombines the
promotion ol environmental, oultural and artistio values.

Artistio aotivities. BYP promotes several events, involving alrioan danoe and musio, inoluding
danoe perlormanoes in publio or private venues, regular danoe and musio workshops, alrioan
drumming olasses and open weekly danoe rehearsals.
