I can in new contexts apply my own strategies to solve problems eg what is the maximum number of months with 5 Sundays in a year? I can sometimes have more than one way of finding a solution. I recognise how a method can be applied to solve similar problems. I can simplify a problem by trying similar cases. When having difficulty with a problem I can stop, think about it and try a different approach. I can change one piece of information and notice the effect this has. I can solve multi-step problems and problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages. I can decide when all possibilities have been found. I can always present information and results in a clear and organised way using lists and tables as appropriate. I can begin to ask probing questions of my own work. I can compare different methods and describe their features.

I can search for a solution by trying out ideas of my own. I can develop the language of reasoning eg If I do this then if will have the effect I can investigate a general statement to determine whether it is always, sometimes or never true. I can use mathematical language to create a general statement orally. Calculations I can use my knowledge of number facts to find complements for 1 using 2 place decimal numbers and complements for 10 using 1 place decimal numbers. I can recall facts up to 10x10 and quickly derive division facts. I can use doubling and halving starting from known facts eg multiply by 25 by x100 and 4 I can use mental methods as a first resort eg when adding larger numbers or 1 place decimal numbers. I can use refined or compact written methods when solving addition and subtraction problems involving two or more integers with four or more digits and decimal fractions to two decimal places. I understand the associative and distributive laws as they apply to multiplication. I use brackets. I can solve multiplication problems TUxU, HTUxU, TUxTU.

I can confidently solve division problems, including those with integer remainders using TUU and HTUU and be able to explain methods used and know what to do with the remainder in a word problem. I can check with the inverse or equivalent calculation, including using a calculator. I can estimate by approximating (round to nearest 10,100,1000) and then check result. I can begin to use simple formulae expressed in words. I can begin to use simple formulae to solve a problem. I can begin to identify the sequence rule for numbers increasing or decreasing in whole number steps. I can use and interpret coordinates in the first quadrant. Numbers and the number system I can confidently compare and order all whole numbers. I can confidently read and write all whole numbers. I can use understanding of place value to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 or 100. I recognise and find multiples, factors and square numbers. I can calculate temperature rise and fall using negative numbers that do not bridge zero. I can order a set of decimal numbers

with three decimal places and mixed sets of numbers with 1 and 2 decimals places. I can recognise approximate proportions of an object, group of objects or measurement, and describe using a range of fractions, including simple non-unitary examples (eg ) or their equivalent decimals or percentages. I can independently identify and use equivalent fractions including those involving hundredths. Measures I can convert larger to smaller units (eg km to m, m to cm, cm to mm, kg to g, l to ml) I can measure lines to the nearest mm. I can measure and calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles and other simple shapes, using counting methods and standard units (cm, cm) I can use 24 hour clock notation. I can estimate and order acute and obtuse angles. I can begin to use a protractor to measure acute and obtuse angles to nearest 5. Space and Shape I can recognise properties of rectangles. I can make shapes with increasing accuracy eg using a ruler or squared paper. I can recognise perpendicular and parallel lines.

I can complete symmetrical patterns with two lines of symmetry at right angles (using squared paper or pegboard) Handling Data I can construct and interpret simple line graphs where intermediate points have no meaning. I can be efficient when choosing and using a range of appropriate scales. I understand and find mode and range of a set of data when asked. I can explain why a chosen graph is appropriate for the given data.
