The History: A man named James Naismith in 1891 invented basketball. It stated out with 9 players on each side but was later changed to 5 per side, a metal ring with a net replaced a peach basket.

II.

The Game: The game consists of four eight-minute quarters. The objective is to accumulate more points than the opponent. There are five time outs per team (1 more given for each overtime)

III.

The Team: The team consists of five (5) players on a court at one time. The positions are 2 Guards, 2 Forwards, and 1 Center.

IV.

Scoring: A field goal (a shot made anywhere on the court) is worth 2 points if in front of three point line if not 3 points. A free throw (an unguarded shot by a player after they have been fouled) is worth 1 point.

V.

Free Throws and Fouls:

a. if fouled while shooting a 2 pt shot = 2 free throws unless the shot was made then only 1. b. If fouled while shooting a 3 pt shot = 3 free throws unless the shot was made then only 1. c. Bonus = After a team makes 7 fouls in a half the other team get a 1&-1 free throw (make the first get to shoot the second) After the 10th foul the other team get to shoot 2 free throws. d. Each player is allowed five fouls before they foul out VI. Terms: a. Dribbling: Bouncing the ball to the floor using one hand at a time. b. Pass: is the movement of the ball by a player who throws, bounces, or rolls the ball to another player. c. Pivot: Occurs when a player holding the ball keeps one foot still and moves the other one. d. Rebound: When a player controls possession of a missed shot, either by a teammate (offensive rebound) or an opponent (defensive rebound) e. Backcourt: the half of the court opposite of the teams basket f. Baseline: end line behind each basket g. Blocking Out: Stepping in front of the offensive player to keep them from rebounding. h. Charging: When an offensive player fouls a defensive player by running into them. i. Defense: The team with out the ball j. Foul: Illegal contact of an opposing player. k. Frontcourt: the half of the court where the offensive teams basket is located. l. Jump Ball: 1. Used to begin the game where two opposing players jump to tip the ball (used at the beginning of the game) 2. Used when two players from opposing teams tie up a ball (alternating possession rule determines who ball it is) m. Double Dribble: A violation when a player stops dribbling, picks up the ball, and then begins to dribble again. n. Key: Free throw lane and the circle area above the free throw line. o. Jump Stop: when a player stops and lands on both feet at the same time. p. Offense: the team with the ball q. Screen/Pick: offensive player establishes a stationary position and blocks a defensive player. r. Traveling: When a player with the ball takes too many steps without dribbling. s. Turnover: Violation by one team that awards the ball to the other team.
