INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

The IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION is published quarterly with a distribution in excess of 3,500 copies. Subscribers include engineering educators and libraries, both in university and industry. Manuscripts published generally are within the following scope: education research, methods, materials, programs, and technology in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and elds within the scope of interest of the IEEE. All manuscripts must be submitted at the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION Manuscript Central site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/te-ieee From this home page, access can be obtained to all information required for the submission of a manuscript. Manuscripts must be submitted as a PDF document. Submission of material will be construed as indicating that it has not been copyrighted, published, submitted, or presented elsewhere, unless explicit notice to the contrary is given.

A. Manuscript Submission

B. Manuscript Type

Three manuscript types are accepted. (See paragraph F to learn how to determine page length exactly.)

Regular PapersContributions that are four-to-six journal pages in length (approximately 20, double-spaced, typewritten pages). Short PapersContributions that are three or less journal pages in length (approximately 10, double-spaced, typewritten pages). CorrespondenceContributions less than one journal page in length that address a topic or issue in a previous edition of the TRANSACTIONS (approximately three double-spaced, typewritten pages).

C. Manuscript Format

In preparing manuscripts for review, please:

Use single column letter-size pages, i.e., 22 cm 28 cm (8.5 inches 11 inches); Arial, 12-point English font; double space between each typed line of the manuscript; and use a 2.5-cm margin (1 inch) for the top, bottom, left, and right margin; Number all pages starting with the title-abstract page; Begin the manuscript with: The manuscript title, capitalized in IEEE style; The name(s) of the author(s) (e.g., Jane Smith, Manuel J. Garcia and Mary R. Jones); An informative abstract paragraph, in boldface type, starting with: Abstract; 100 to 250 words for a regular paper or 50 words for a short paper or correspondence); 5-8 index terms, in boldface type, in alphabetical order, and as a nal paragraph of the Abstract, starting: Index Terms, followed by an em dash, then the index terms in alphabetical order. Capitalize only the rst word of the rst term. A list of keywords is available by sending a blank email to keywords@ieee.org. Use rst-order, second-order, and third-order headings, formatted as per the IEEE Style Manual to assist the reader in following the presentation; Section headings are capitalized, enumerated by Roman numerals, and centered above the text; Subsection headings are enumerated by capital letters followed by followed by periods, ush left, upper and lower case, and italic. For formatting of third- and fourth-level headings, see the IEEE Style Manual; Reference and Appendix headings are capitalized, without numerals, and centered above the text. Clearly label location for placement of each graphic within the manuscript if the graphics are presented at the end of the manuscript; Use metric units; Dene all acronyms and any non-standard symbols and abbreviations when rst used in the text; Ensure that all subscripts, superscripts, Greek letters, and mathematical symbols are clearly identied; Give complete bibliographies, formatted according to the IEEE Style Manual.

D. Manuscript Style

Manuscript authors are expected to meet the highest standards of writing quality. If English is not the rst language of the author, s/he should request someone whose mother tongue is English to review the manuscript and offer editorial changes before submission. Please

Write in the third person; avoid the use of the rst person (I, we, our); Avoid the use of the demonstrative pronoun, as in: This is important. Instead, clearly indicate what is being referred to, as in This instruction is important. Spell check your manuscript in US English. (Hint: to change the spell check language, try selecting the entire document, go to Language on the Tools drop-down menu, and select US English.)

All line drawings and photos will be published in black and white, unless color is specically requested. This will incur an extra charge. Letters should be readily legible when the drawing is reduced to a two- or one-column width, as much as 4:1 reduction from the original. This publication is a hybrid journal, allowing either Traditional manuscript submission or Open Access (author-pays OA) manuscript submission. Upon submission, if you choose to have your manuscript be an Open Access article, you commit to pay the discounted $1,750 OA fee if your manuscript is accepted for publication in order to enable unrestricted public access. Any other application charges (such as over-length page charge and/or charge for the use of color in the print format) will be billed separately once the manuscript formatting is complete but prior to the publication. If you would like your manuscript to be a Traditional submission, your article will be available to qualied subscribers and purchasers via IEEE Xplore. No OA payment is required for Traditional submission. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the authors company or institution will be requested to pay a charge of $110 per page for the rst six pages to cover part of the cost of publication. If the length of the paper as printed exceeds the six pages, mandatory charges will be levied. If the $110 per page charge for the rst six pages is not honored, this mandatory charge will be $200 for each page after the sixth. However, if the $110 per page charge is honored, the mandatory charge will be $110 for each page after the sixth. Payment of page charges (rst six pages only) for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS is not obligatory nor is it a prerequisite for publication. The author will receive 100 free reprints (without covers) if the voluntary page charge is honored. Detailed instructions will accompany the page proofs. To determine the page length of a manuscript in TRANSACTIONS format, put this into the template available in the IEEE Author Digital Toolbox at: http://www. ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/authors/authors_journals.html. It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright of the technical contributions it publishes. To comply with the IEEE copyright policy, authors are required to sign an IEEE Copyright Transfer Form before publication in either the print or electronic medium. The form is provided upon approval of their manuscript. Authors must submit a signed copy of this form with their manuscript. This form, a copy of which appears in each February issue of the TRANSACTIONS, returns to authors and their employers full right to reuse their material for their own purposes. The form and further information can be found at http://www.ieee.org/copyright/ cfrmlink.htm For the nal printed production of the manuscript, the author will need to provide electronic les. These should be either in Word, TeX, LaTeX, or WordPerfect (use standard Macros). If the source le is in Word and contains the gures, separate gure les are not required. LaTeX templates can be downloaded at http:// www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html. Check that your les are complete, including abstract, text, references, footnotes, biographies, gures, and captions. IEEE can process most commercial software, but not page layout programs. Do not send PostScript les. Digital Object Identier 10.1109/TE.2012.2226093
