Create your own Power Copy

In CATIA you can create your own Power Copys. These can be fairly intricate operations Follow these steps to create a simple power copy and try to expand on this yourself adding more features as you go

Start with a new part and a pad Create a 3D point on one of the faces Create a sketch on that same face and create a circle thats centre is constrained to the 3D point created. Add a diameter dimension to the circle Exit Sketcher Create a simple pocket On the bottom edge of the pocket create a chamfer

Now say you have to create lots of these you dont want to have to go through the same process over and over again This is where we will use the Power Copy to speed things up a little.

Go to Insert > Knowledge Templates > Power Copy Now you need to select what you want to include in your Power Copy Select the Pocket.1, Sketch.2(sketch for the pocket) and the Chamfer.1 You will see on the right, in order to create the Power Copy you will need a pad face and a 3D point Click OK

Create another 3D point on a face where you want to create this pocket and chamfer again Click Insert > Instantiate from selection You now need to make two selections the face and the newly created point Click OK and see your power copy

You can do this a few times

Using the Sectioning Tool (DMU Space Analysis) TEKnow Tips

The Sectioning tool from the Space Analysis toolbar can be valuable for interior details of assemblies within the Assembly Design workbench.

The Sectioning tool differs from the Dynamic Sectioning tool accessible from the Part Design workbench.introduced in CATIA V5 R20

Accessing the Sectioning Tool

The Sectioning tool is located on the toolbar of the same name. By default, this toolbar is located with the icons along the bottom of the interface. Cant find the icon? Right-click on any toolbar. Inspect the list of available toolbars for the option Space Analysis IF the option Space Analysis is missing from the pop-up menu, the license you are currently using does not include this tool IF the checkmark is missing from beside Space Analysis in the pop-up menu, click Space Analysis to activate the toolbar.

However, if the Space Analysis toolbar is verified to be available and activated, there may be insufficient room on the bottom of the interface for the icon to be visible. Notification of Icons hidden due to insufficient room is provided by the >> symbol indicated above.

By repositioning tool bars, the Sectioning tool is revealed

Using the Sectioning Tool

Select the Sectioning tool to activate Section display

The Section plane will display associated with a default reference plane and a sub-window allowing view of the resulting cross-section will appear.

A variety of Sectioning Definition styles are available for use including: 1. Section Plane (default) 2. Section Slice 3. Section Box

Toggling the Volume Cut option on the Definition tab allows activation of a cutaway display in the Section, in addition to the Cross Section creation.

Manipulating the Section (Section Plane)

The Section may be further manipulated by clicking and dragging along the sensitive elements of the Dynamic Section Compass as you would with the Model Compass

For example, clicking and dragging along the w-axis allows dynamic review as the section updates on the fly.

Positioning the Section

Sections may be easily oriented along any of the 3 default planes by selecting the X, Y or Z normal constraint.

Additional Positioning options include: 1. Edit Position and Dimensions: for position adjustments through numerical input 2. Geometrical Target:: for positioning a Section relative to selected geometry (useful for hole and cylinder inspection) 3. Positioning by 2/3 Selections: for positioning a Section relative to selected lines (2 selections) or vertices (3 selections 4. Invert Normal: for controlling the viewing direction of the Section 5. Reset Position: restores the section alignment to the X normal at 0,0,0
