Autism 2013 Spring Workshop Series


The Role of Medications in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders February 9th This workshop aims to review the role that medications can play in helping youth in the Autism Spectrum better respond to psychosocial and educational interventions. Dr Daniolos will share his experience working with youth with ASDs, and delve into the current evidence base and state of knowledge regarding the efficacy, benefits and side effects of medication use. He will also review several novel/experimental agents. About Our Speaker Peter Daniolos, MD Dr. Daniolos is a Clinical Associate Professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The University of Iowa Childrens Hospital, where he serves as the Training Director of The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program. He received his medical degree at the University of North Dakota. Prior to moving to Iowa, he served as the Training Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at Childrens National Medical Center/The George Washington University Medical Center, and the Medical Director of the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, where he worked with a multidisciplinary team engaged in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of autism spectrum youth. Dr Daniolos is a passionate fan of multimodal treatment interventions for youth in the autism spectrum, and deeply values psychosocial interventions. Autism and Giftedness April 13 Autism spectrum disorder affects individuals across the intellectual continuum, including individuals with intellectual and academic talents. This presentation focuses on the characteristics of high ability youth with autism, how to obtain an assessment to understand the individuals needs, and appropriate interventions to nurture these students talents while also addressing their disability. About Our Speaker Alissa Doobay, PhD Dr. Doobay received her PhD in Counseling Psychology from The University of Iowa in 2010. She is currently a licensed psychologist at the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at The University of Iowa. She provides clinical assessment and therapy services for twice-exceptional students (e.g., high ability students with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders). Her research focuses on the characteristics and needs of high ability students with autism spectrum disorder.

Please indicate whether you would like to attend the workshop at the Center for Disabilities and Development or by Webinar on your computer. Supervised play for children ages 3 to 10 will be provided for a limited number of families for the workshops. Please indicate the number of children you would like supervision for and their ages when registering.

The closest available parking is the visitor parking lot in front of the Center for Disabilities and Development. Parking is also available in Ramps 1 or 3. There is a fee for parking. Families can use the coined meters in the visitor parking lot or use cash or credit card in Ramps 1 and 3.
