Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; As a priest, I have always enjoyed the pronouncement in our Baptismal Rite that says; This is our faith, this is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord. It is proclaimed immediately after families gathered for a baptism make a profession of faith witnessing to the faith of the community. It evokes for me the opportunity to remember who we are as followers of Christ and that we are connected all the way back to the beginnings of Jesus ministry on this earth. But it also reminds me that we are part of a church, one that is holy and one that is sinful. One that is trying to live out the redemptive actions of Christ in our world and one with a long history of tremendous grace filled moments and the shame of our inability to consistently act in justice, truth and mercy. But then this is the family we are part of and is part of us. And this is the church we are being baptized into, not a perfect society or a hallowed hall of sainted persons. On this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Jesus ventured out of the waters of the Jordan, knowing that he was loved greatly by the Father all the way to His Cross. As we venture into this New Year, may we recall our baptismal graces and move forward trusting that we are greatly loved by the Father, in all our strengths and in all our weaknesses. We do so not alone, but as imperfect members of an imperfect church. May we all go forward this year in trust and in faith. Together in Christ;

Fr. Steve Pastor

New Director of Parish Ministries

I would like to introduce to you our new Director of Parish Ministries, Joni Fleming. As you will see from her bio below, she began in the Midwest and has migrated around the country living a very active life. Joni is very excited to accept this new opportunity in our parish community. She will become a regular member of our parish staff and I look forward to her being able to assist our parish ministries in becoming even more vibrant and a source of continued grace. Her ministry office is right off the main parish office in front of the church. Please stop by and say hi.

Im honored to have the opportunity to work and serve the community of St. Edward and to share a little about how I ended in this parish and position. Moving from Indianapolis, where I grew up, to Florida just prior to my senior year in high school gave me the confidence to move and start over anywhere, which I did many times during my 22 year marketing career with General Electric and Microsoft. In February of 1999 I left Seattle and moved to Dana Point after falling in love with its beautiful vistas, harbor, resort atmosphere, and our beautiful church. Like many other parishioners, in March of 1999 I answered a pulpit request for volunteers who would meet ten of your neighbors and eagerly signed up as a St. Edwards census program volunteer. By April I stepped up to fill the censuss lead position in recruiting volunteers and managing the program, its 40 team leads and 400 volunteers. When the census ended in July, Father John asked me to serve on St. Edwards Capital Campaign Executive Committee which I did for the next 1 years. In 2002 I joined Orange County United Way and worked there until the fall of 2005 when I resigned to temporarily move to Florida to assist with my fathers care as he battled cancer. Three years later, after losing my father, I permanently moved back to Dana Point and once again became an active volunteer both as a parishioner at St. Edward and in the community. In my youth I discovered my talent and love for organizing and connecting people. Im thrilled to be able to use these skills, combined the many others Ive acquired in my corporate and non-profit careers, to help St. Edward and our parishioners further the kingdom of God.

Many of you attended the October 15, 2012 Parish Assembly. Thank you for your input regarding the Parish Goals previously established. Please help our Parish community embrace these goals as we move into 2013. Jay Wilson, Chairman Pastoral Council Goal #1: Create opportunities to blend and engage the gifts and talents within the communities of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe/St. Edward the Confessor School. 1. Celebrate special feast days together: Expand celebratory Mass sharing which currently include Our Lady of Guadalupe, Holy Thursday and Thanksgiving. Encourage liturgical ministries of the respective churches to meet together periodically and share responsibilities during the shared Masses. Promote attendance at the bi-lingual Masses. Make sure to include festivities at both locations when possible to help all feel involved. 2. Cultural Sharing: A multi-cultural event highlighting different cultures with food, music and dance. 3. Ministry Exchange: Initiate discussion between same ministry heads from San Felipe and St. Edward on how both chapters can work together periodically. Share music ministry between San Felipe and St. Edward occasionally. Goal #2: Enhance and expand programs for youth and young adults to explore and to strengthen their understanding and in living their Catholic faith. 1. Promote programs where youth and young adults could be side by side in worship and prayer, and in service projects. Structure ongoing service projects to include youth, to provide mentorship and fellowship. Create a sense of community and foster relationships through activities that focus on commonalities. Goal #3: Invite all parishioners into a deeper faith journey by encouraging them to participate in parish ministries. 1. Support parish ministries and encourage growth and participation by parishioners. Develop a ministry-of-the-month program, highlighting a specific ministry or group of ministries to promote new volunteers and advise of services provided. Coordinate ministry fairs. Goal #4: Present opportunities for parishioners to enrich their personal relationship with God and serve as liaisons and participates with the Faith Formation 2020 vision. Increase awareness on the sacredness and reverence of worship. Determine ways to emphasize the sacredness of worship and worship space. Discuss how to instill a sense of reverence during worship. 2. RESPECT LIFE
January 22,, 2013, marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states. Prior to 1973, abortion was prohibited in many states and limited in others. Roe v. Wade was based on a legal right of privacy, which the justices claimed was implicitly found in the U.S. Constitution. Helen Alvare, associate professor of law at George Mason University in Virginia, explains, Legally, logically, Roe should have never been issued. It misconstrued the way the Supreme Court is supposed to go about defining constitutional rights. Alvare has spent her career promoting the sanctity of life and marriage, both for the USCCB and for the Holy See.
