Chord Electronics was born out of an idea I had in the early eighties as a young engineer working in aircraft avionics.

This specialised field of electronics is demanding, being required to build highly advanced power supplies that were both reliable and efficient. It was from this knowledge base I was able to apply a concept of linking the positive and negative power supplys rails together with a strong magnetic flux. This dynamic coupling enabled me to eliminate short term distortions associated with high currents feeding back into the ground loop of the amplifier. This technique when applied, allows the amplifier stages within the design to be made much faster and more agile. Although, at this date, a commercial product would have been too expensive to manufacture. Leaving the concept on one side, I continued my industrial career and eventually held three directorships within Astec, Raytheon and AT & T. As time passed reasonably priced components became available that enabled my design to be made. Other advanced techniques were developed over the next decade and Chord was founded in 1989. Our first major success followed one year later when the BBC were made aware of our efforts. Samples were submitted and in a surprisingly short time Chord had a broadcast qualified unit. Word spread and other notable installations such as EMIs Abbey Road Studios, Sony (New York), Toshiba (Japan) and many others including George Lucas Studio, Skywalker Ranch soon followed. However, my primary interest is with the consumer market which is where the majority of our development efforts have progressed, pushing technologies to the limit in both the digital field and power amplifiers. With this rich tradition of high achievement and our wonderful working environment in the Pumphouse, a beautifully restored and fully modernised, historical building on the River Medway in Kent, I am truly proud of what our professional and dedicated team here at Chord Electronics has achieved.

CPM 3350 Integrated Amplifier The Chord CPM 3350 integrated amplifier design is based on the CPA3200E and SPM1050 pre and power amplifier combinations but developed specifically to give a one box solution. It offers all the flexibility of a Chord preamplifier with line level source selection for up to six input signals using the remote handset or via the push button front panel controls. Individual input gains can be selected to prevent large changes in volume when switching between inputs. Two tape loops allow for recording one source whilst listening to another. The power amplifier based on Chords tried and tested technology of ultra high frequency low ESR power supply has the ability to store a great deal more energy, and far more efficiently than conventional designs. This gives the amp enormous reserves of instantly delivered, precisely controlled power which is more than capable of controlling even the most demanding loudspeakers. With the ability to select the pre outs and speaker outputs together or individually the flexibility of the unit allows it to be used as a pre-amp, on its own or with another power amp for bi-amping.

CPA 5000 Pre-Amplifier The CPA5000 builds on the already advanced CPA4000E with the latest Ultra High Frequency power supply and ultra low noise circuitry giving an amazing noise floor performance below -130dB. It also utilises solid milled aluminium shielding to prevent RF interference. Extra flexibility is now offered with four pairs of fully balanced XLR style inputs and an additional four pairs of RCA style unbalanced inputs with two completely independent tape/recording loops. Selection can be made manually via the front panel or using the supplied remote control. Our Technology is some of the most advanced in the Audio Industry and stems from my earliest days as an Avionics Engineer working on black boxes for aircraft. We were regularly given a space the size of a chickens wing at the back of these boxes in which we had to shoe horn perhaps half a kilowatt of power. Invariably that meant we were pushing the limits of power supply technology to complete the task. So with this knowledge base I was able to apply it to my hobby at that time of making amplifiers for myself and friends. It occurred to me that effectively an amplifier is suspended between its power supply rails there is a positive supply and a negative supply and a mid point, zero point known as ground.This reference point is at the back of the amplifier and of course it tends to get pulled around when an amplifier is swinging between its rails. This would be no problem but its the same reference for the front end of the amplifier so effectively if the loudspeaker is pulling on it, it introduces a time lagged distortion component into the amplifiers input and this is one reason why amplifiers can burst into oscillation, especially if you connect them to a highly capacitive load. The normal way of solving this is to make the front end stages of the amplifier have a slower more sluggish response by the increasing the local feedback then opening up the loop responses on the intermediate stages; this is the conventional way to keep an amplifier stable. I thought I could negate this distortion component getting back into the amplifier and open up the responses by drawing power from both positive and negative rails simultaneously at any time in the amplifiers output swing. I did this by using a cross coupled magnetic device know as a bifilar wound choke which acts rather like a gyroscope. It likes to remain in balance with equal and opposite currents flowing in both directions and when it sees a current demand from say the positive rail it automatically acts like a transformer and pulls more current from the negative rail. The concept worked and I found I could open up the loop response throughout the amplifier making it sound far more open whilst remaining completely stable. This concept has been enhanced and refined over the last 30 years but remains the underlying principle of all Chord Electronics amplifiers. My collaboration with Robert Watts a digital design genius who spent the last 30 years developing DAC technology started in 1996. He had an ultra high performance design using filed programmable gate array technology and our breakthrough came with chips that had an extremely high gate count. He designed a small card to drive a large pulse array switching ladder which became the DAC64. There are few products in the world that can reach the performance of the DAC64 as most companies producing commercial and industrial DACs use commercially available chips from Analog Devices or Burr Brown. Fabricated from pieces of silicon around 3mm square they have structures fabricated at about 100 to 200 microns in size. Their arrays contain the same technologies as ours but our pulse arrays are fabricated from discrete surface mount components and these are physically 10,000 times larger and therefore we can maintain much greater accuracies and consequently significantly better performance. Our product styling comes from form following function. I draw my design influences from both aerospace and architecture. I truly love great architecture. Greats such as Richard Rogers, Frank Lloyd Wright and even Antonio Gaudi whose quirky joy bursts from every building hes ever designed. It may be someday you may see a Gaudi inspired design from Chord, but thats for another year.

Creating the ideal working environment is as important as crafting the perfect balance of sound. The same dedication and attention to detail that has gone into the development of all Chord products has been applied to the unique building that the company owns and operates from. Known as 'The Pumphouse', it is idyllically located in rural Kent on the banks of the River Medway and is within easy reach of the M20, the main artery connecting London with the continent. The company's sensitive working ethos has been extended to encompass every aspect of The Pumphouse, retaining the integrity of the original structure. Even the colours chosen to decorate the building are derived from evidence of the building's original 19th century colour schemes.

The Pumphouse
The Pumphouse forms part of what was originally a waterworks complex, part of which were built in the Egyptian Style and dating from 1860. The Pumphouse itself is an amazing brick structure built around 1878 and converted from what was the original pumping engine house, attached to one side of which is a single storey, former boiler house. Both buildings have been integrated to form Chord's stylish offices, assembly workshop and extensive listening rooms. The Pumphouse was a steam powered technology centre for that period and is now home to some of the most advanced audio electronics research and development facilities in Europe. The original site also included a bizarre chimney over 50 metres high, designed to resemble a giant obelisk, like Cleopatra's Needle. Sadly, it was later demolished. Before the last century the waterworks site became famous for the part it played in local historical events.
