For the seismic upgrade of the Pasadena City Hall ARG architects specified 33" SSRW Seismic Stone Paver Floor Covers to fill the moat area surrounding the buildings perimeter in its inner courtyard. The covers provide full four way movement and are designed to work in conjunction with the base isolators when a seismic event occurs.

One of the primary reasons for the seismic retrofit of Pasadena City Hall was that studies in the 1990s indicated that major earthquakes in the future could destroy several parts of the building completely and result in loss of life. In 2003, the City Council approved a plan for the seismic
retrofit and historic restoration. Seismic retrofit of the building included the installation of structural base isolators that now allow the
building to withstand future earthquake activity. Restoration activities were undertaken topreserve many of the historic architectural elements of City Hall.
Pasadena City Hall achieves LEED Gold status

Along with the seismic upgrade, the City of Pasadena requested that the building be LEED Certified. The design team used sustainable strategies throughout the project. Even the C/S expansion joint covers in the patio area are hidden beneath a 4" layer of decomposed granite.

A major consideration of the de Young project was that the expansion joint covers must be virtually invisible within the museums weathered copper skin. Architects Fong & Chan, SF; and Herzog & de Meuron specified CS XLS cover system knowing it could be seamlessly incorporated into the facades copper panel frame. The 24" XLS covers are designed to release from the wall to provide full seismic movement.
C/S @ Orange County Performing Arts Center

In the interior of the magnificent Segerstrom Concert Hall, Architect Pelli Clarke Pelli specified C/S 12" LAF Seismic Wall Covers. Virtually imperceptible the LAF wall covers are lightweight, match the concert halls wall finish without visual interruption and provide full movement of the joint without damage to surrounding wall surfaces.
San Francisco International Airport

Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Throughout San Francisco International Airports base isolated main terminal, massive C/S wall floor and ceiling covers provide four way movement up to 60" while being virtually invisible. The SSR Stone Paver floor joints are 200' long and provide 36" of movement.
Newseum
Architect: Polshek Partnership To provide movement and security between the Newseum and the adjacent Canadian Embassy, Polshek Partnership specified SC-1200 Exterior Covers and SRJ-1200 Roof Covers that tie both buildings together. The covers with factory mitered transitions are attached to the buildings delicate marble surface.

Project Manager: Parsons Corporation A seismic upgrade was required for this landmark building. Parsons specified C/S Gyrometric cabs (Model MACC) and SSRW Seismic moat covers to provide egress from the building during seismic activity.
Center for the Intrepid Armed Forces Physical Rehabilitation Center

Architect: The Smith Group C/S supplied unobtrusive SM-2 Wall Covers to match blend surrounding wall surfaces and to provide multi-directional thermal movement in order to keep the facility walls from cracking.

Floor Covers
The size of joint and movement dynamics dictate whether you require a standard or seismic expansion joint cover system. Before making a selection, there are other decisions you must make. The selection of the floor cover is often the most critical step in the specification process since the performance of the floor cover has the greatest impact on the occupants of the building. The presence of rolling loads and the need for hygiene are major considerations in cover selection, while aesthetics in seismic covers is also a significant issue.
Wall & Ceiling Covers

Having selected the floor cover, identifying a matching wall cover is a relatively simple task. When it comes to seismic covers, however, there are options driven by both functionality and aesthetics. Choose from covers that become detached from the wall to minimize damage or ones that are self-closing to minimize post-event maintenance. Many of our wall covers are designed to accept a range of surface materials to maximize concealment of the cover.

Stainless steel foil drape with block insulation affords maximum economy in material and installation. Wall barriers limited to 1 - 4 joints and require no stainless foil.
When an expansion or seismic joint passes through a fire-rated structure it is necessary to maintain the fire integrity of that structure. Maintaining the integrity of a 2" wide joint is quite simple; however, a joint designed for seismic movement up to 24 inches becomes a more difficult proposition. In general, the wider the joint, the more complex the fire barrier. Most manufacturers use the same barrier design for all joint sizes. C/S has simplified our fire barrier for small joint sizes for easy installation and to maximize cost effectiveness (see Reflex). Floor applications are relatively simple configurations regardless of joint size unless lateral shear is required. Walls, on the other hand, can be more complex. All C/S fire barriers require only one barrier in the wall and require that the studs be
wrapped with drywall to maintain full integrity. (Includes shaft walls) Variations in wall configurations and finishes, as well as transitions between adjacent fire barriers, make it critical to consult the manufacturer concerning typical applications. C/S has a technical expert available to assist you in detailing these applications. Since 1996 building codes require fire barriers to limit the passing of heat and flame for 2, 3 and sometimes 4 hours, as well as accommodating the dynamic movement for which the joint was designed. ASTM E 1966 and UL 2079 specify criteria for cycling a fire barrier 500 times prior to fire testing. C/S tests all of its fire barriers at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) because they represent the most stringent and universally accepted testing authority.
