MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING: Agency survey

Student Name_________________________________________ (Attach this page to the front of your paper). Interviewing organizations (85 points possible) I strongly suggest you take or email this assignment to a writing tutor before submitting it for grading! I may deduct up to 15 points for grammar, spelling, sentence construction, etc. Especially when e-mailing an assignment for tutoring, allow extra time. All papers must be typed, standard Word spacing of 1.0 or 1.15 in headings, body 1.15 or double-spaced, 12 point type, 1-inch margins. Copy and paste the questions above each of your answers, (including the point value) and be sure to number/letter each of the sections. Do not leave more than standard spaces between paragraphs, headings & text, etc. The factors to consider in choosing a group are: (You dont need to write the answers to the ABCD items belowbe sure to consider them before making your choice and writing it in below). A. Your level of unfamiliarity with that group's cultural values/styles of communication (the more unfamiliar you are, the more you will learn from this exercise); B. Your level of discomfort/dislike/prejudice concerning this population (the higher that level is, the more you and your future clients will benefit from this exploration of your feelings) C. Your ability/willingness to explore your feelings and knowledge level regarding this group of people D. The level of harm you may potentially do to future clients from this group if your present knowledge levels/attitudes remain unchanged. State which one of the following 4 ethnic groups (other than your own) you will use to complete this assignment. The groups are: African-American, Asian-American, Latina/O, and Native American. An example, using the Snnink ethnic group and the XYZ treatment agency: (do not use these questions in your paper):

1a: How does the XYZ agency adapt to the requirement for members of the Church of Fnog (the most common church in the Snnink group) to worship with all their family members at dusk every Wednesday night? 1b: The answer to this question is important because it tells me quite a bit about XYZs willingness to truly individualize treatment, as mandated by state rules. Whether they provide transportation to the church, allow people to miss and make up other requirements of the program due to their absence on Wednesday evenings, and how they feel about respectfully including the family and the clients beliefs in a recovery program are revealed by the answer to this question. 1c: Knowing this about XYZ allows me to understand something about their level of cultural competency, and helps me predict how likely my Snnink clients are to succeed if treated at this agency.
Lets say their answer was positive to all the above.. I

would know that, regarding client religious beliefs, they do actually support client participation and are willing to adapt their standard program to the needs of the client, even if it is inconvenient for them. Their ability to deal with cultural difference, with this group, in this area, is high. 2. (15 points) Contact and interview (in person or on the telephone: no Internet information) Three addiction treatment organizations or certified/licensed professionals (this does not include front office, aide, or other staff-only counselors or counseling supervisors). List the agency and the person, if possible, to whom you talked. 3. (15 points) Briefly state how you can professionally utilize each organization and what benefit you expect to receive for your clients from each of the resources. 4. (15 points) List the organizations you talked to and a few sentences about the information you found, in a short format that you can send to all class members. Attach a copy of that list to your paper when you turn it in; you can talk more about it in your presentation.
