Help rescue Back to the Wild

BY DONNA LUEKE A parent whose child has rescued a wounded bird or toad knows that Mona Rutger and the staff at Back to the Wild will patiently and humanely answer questions and offer expert advice or sanctuary. A person who has never seen an eagle, hawk or an owl up close may have had their memorable first experience with Back to the Wilds traveling exhibits at festivals and schools in our area or at their remarkable Back to the Wild sanctuary near Castalia. In 2006, Rutger was named Animal Planets Hero of the Year. In October of 2012, Back to the Wild rescued a bald eagle that was struck by a jet at the Erie/Ottawa Regional Airport in Port Clinton. There have been surgeries for the eagle and there will be a lengthy rehabilitation at Back to the Wild, after which the Airport Eagle is scheduled to be released late this summer. After 20 years of supporting and rescuing animals and educating our children and our community, Back to the Wild can use financial support. Rutger, who rarely asks for assistance, has posted a heartfelt letter on facebook and on the Back to the Wild website, www.backtothewild.com. We have no guaranteed source of income and most donors have had to cut back or even drop out until things improve. I cant and wont give up the ship, but it is a great challenge to find funding, says Rutger. On a very heartwarming and uplifting note, our supporters were extra generous during the Holiday Season and New Year, remembering us with a much-needed donation to help us keep our doors open. If you are in a position to help us help wildlife, remember us throughout the year, especially in the spring when we are literally overwhelmed with hundreds of orphaned and injured wildlings monthly.

Mona Rutger releases a rehabilitated eagle back to the wild at Resthaven Wildlife Area near Castalia. Throughout each year Back to the Wild treats over 2,200 wild animals, including hawks, eagles, owls, deer, fox, rabbits, squirrels, songbirds, herons, waterfowl, reptiles and amphibians.

BACK TO THE WILD is a volunteer, non-profit wildlife rehabilitation and nature education center located in Castalia. Its primary mission is to rehabilitate and ultimately release into their natural habitat, injured,

orphaned and displaced wildlife. BACK TO THE WILD also presents educational programs to schools and to members of youth groups and community organizations. For further

information, contact Mona Rutger at 419-684-9539 or e-mail mona@backtothewild.com. Contributions may be sent to BACK TO THE WILD, P.O. Box 423,Castalia, OH 44824

For a great time visit Red Cross Bloodmobile

Port Clinton lost two of its most precious citizens this past week and I will miss them both very much. Dick Wolf passed away last Friday. He literally gave his life to the Port Clinton Yacht Club as the caretaker there for 34 years. The title caretaker, as Past Commodore Lock Zeis pointed out at the funeral, doesnt quite cover what Dick did in his years at PCYC. The room was filled with Past Commodores for whom he served, literally taking care of every inch of that facility. On Monday morning, The other Mary Alice, otherwise known as Myrt Streeter, also passed away. She was a character in the best sense of that term. She and her late husband Clarence raised a family of beautiful and successful children, and they will forever be her legacy.

Dave was one of 105 entries who found Wylie in the ad for the Frederick Agency on page 11A while Barbara was among 64 folks who found Wylie in the ad for Portage Resale Center on page 8A of last weeks issue. We had to wait a week because it all got bumped thanks to the Great Swami. Both win our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Well be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net.

I had a great time giving blood at the Red Cross Bloodmobile at Catawba Community Hall last Saturday morning. I did a double red this time. The Bloodmobile will be back in our area this coming Monday, Jan. 14 at St. Paul Lutheran Church on South Church Rd. in Marblehead from noon to 5 p.m. I can tell you from personal experience that it gives me a great deal of satisfaction giving blood to perhaps help save the life of a total stranger.

A Merry Christmas in the Conestoga West End

On Sunday, Dec. 23, Lee Horne, Mayor of Port Clinton Vince Leone and his wife Suzi, Chief of Police Rob Hickman and his wife Roseann and John L. Sullivan handed out gifts in the Conestoga West End of Port Clinton. Horne has wanted to do this project for several years. This year he found the support to make his wish come true and enrich the Christmas of many children. There were donations of toys and funds from the Conestoga West End, from Port Clinton citizens and from Maureen Saponari of the Salvation Army. There were baby dolls and Barbie dolls, basketball hoops and trucks, hat and mitten sets, games, sleds and more. The unwrapped gifts were bagged and labeled according to age and gender, then tagged with Merry Christmas from the Conestoga West End. The children of the West End squealed, jumped up and down and gave out hugs as they picked their choice of toys from the bags. Lee Horne said, This made my Christmas. I cannot wait until next year to do it again. I know we all know the true meaning of Christmas, but until you do this and see the faces of these kids, you may not ever know how truly blessed you are.

If you have interest in serving on the Danbury Township Zoning Commission, call Zoning Inspector Kathryn Dale at 419-734-6120 or email her at zoning@danburytownship.com to learn more about the activities of this board. The Zoning Commission meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month and is responsible for amendments to the zoning resolution and map. To be considered for a board position your residence of record must be Danbury Township. An application for appointed positions is available at the Township Zoning Department or at www.danburytownship.com. Applications should be returned to the Zoning Inspector. Their job is to keep the zoning resolution up to date for the protection of the township as a whole. For these purposes the zoning resolution not only includes the text, but the zoning map as well. The Zoning Commission proposes to the Township Trustees any changes to the text or the map as they determine to be in the best interests of the township. The Zoning Commission is comprised of five members appointed by the Board of Township Trustees. Each Member is appointed for a five year term. Each term is staggered to have one term ending each calendar year. Members may be reappointed by the Board of Township Trustees. The Board of Township Trustees also appoint two alternate members for five year terms. The Commission is supported by Zoning Department staff.

SPORTS
The Rockets full-court press also gave the Streaks (45) problems as Carpenter and Andrea Cecil consistently pressured the ball and created some key turnovers in the second quarter to help Oak Harbor build the lead. Briana Reardon led the Streaks with nine points and Brennan Reardon and Laura Baez finished with six points apiece. SJCC was missing two key players and were so shorthanded that the JV game had to be cancelled. Oak Harbor 57, Margaretta 38 Abbie Gezo led the Rockets with 16 points and Makayla Carpenter had 13 to lead the Rockets to victory. Oak Harbor took control early, outscoring the Lady Bears, 18-2, in the first quarter. Margarettas Kelsey Kromer led all scorers with 18 points. Port Clinton girls defeat Oak Harbor, 53-39

BY YANEEK SMITH In their second matchup of the season, Port Clinton defeated Oak Harbor, 53-39. The Redskins jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Rockets 12-6 in the first quarter and 9-6 in the second for a 21-12 lead at the half. In the second half Oak Harbor was able to make a few runs, but was never able to seriously threaten as Port Clinton slowly pulled away, outscoring the Rockets 32-27 in the final two quarters. Tiffany Colston led all scorers with 22 points and Hope Thorbahn helped pace the Skins with 18. Makayla Carpenter, Maria Boers and Abbie Gezo each finished with nine points to lead Oak Harbor. With the win, the Skins are now 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. The Rockets, meanwhile, drop to 6-5 and 4-4 in the league. Port Clinton 52, Edison 44 Tiffany Colston led Port Clinton with 20 points and Hope Thorbahn added 18 in the Skins victory over Edison. At 11-1, Port Clinton is currently ranked ninth in Division II. Clyde, the top team in the SBC at 13-0, is ranked No. 2 Oak Harbor 48, St. Joseph CC 27 In the first quarter, St. Joseph Central Catholic hit its open jumpers, grabbed some offensive rebounds and played good, solid basketball in battling Oak Harbor to a 13-13 tie. But in the second quarter Rockets forward Abbie Gezo helped key a 17-0 run that put Oak Harbor in control as it rolled a to 48-27 victory over the Crimson Streaks. Gezo scored 13 of the points during the spurt to turn a 15-13 deficit into a 30-15 lead. We started off slow but after the first minute of the first quarter, we picked it up and started a run, said Gezo, who led all scorers with 17 points. We knew we had to come out with some intensity in the second quarter. Rockets point guard Makayla Carpenter also contributed, scoring 13 points as she was able to consistently break down the SJCC defense and get some open shots in the lane. Thats my first look, Carpenter said of taking it to the basket. If its (there), I go to the basket. If it doesnt, I try to pass it out. It just so happened that every time I drove into the middle I stopped for the jumper. Maria Boers helped the Rockets extend the lead early in the third quarter by scoring seven of Oak Harbors points during an 11-4 run that saw them push the lead to 42-23 after three quarters.

Danbury girls improve to 4-0 in the TAAC

BY YANEEK SMITH After falling to Seneca East in their previous game, the Danbury Lakers bounced back to defeat league foe Maumee Valley Country Day, 43-25. The Lakers offense featured another balanced attack as Erin Lavelle, Alyssa Almendinger and Stephanie Kukay each scored eight points to lead Danbury. Kennedie Jackson led the Hawks with 10 points. With the win, the Lakers are now 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. This week, the Lakers enter a difficult portion of their schedule. They host Oak Harbor in non-conference action before taking on top of two teams in the TAAC. The Lakers host Toledo Christian (8-2, 5-0 TAAC) on Thursday, travel to Ottawa Hills (5-5, 3-2 TAAC) on Saturday and host St. Mary CC on Tuesday.

Join us for a delicious meal and learn how

this winter could be different from any other winter youve weathered! Warm up to the idea of an active lifestyle, with options to suit your needs.

Danbury boys fall to Cardinal Stritch

The Danbury Lakers fell to Cardinal Stritch, 51-29, last weekend, losing their fourth straight game. The loss leaves the Lakers at 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. Stritch was led by point guard Joey Cousino, who led all scorers with 16 points. Austin Adams, one of the area's top players, was held to 14 points, but it was not enough as the Cardinals were able to race out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter before going ahead 21-8 at halftime. Danbury battled Stritch (5-6, 3-3 TAAC) to a 14-14 tie in the third period but the Cardinal blew the game open in the fourth by outscoring the Lakers, 16-7. Freshman point guard John Rhodes led Danbury with eight points and Zak Miller chipped in with seven. This Friday the Lakers host Maumee Valley CD at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks, who won the conference last season, have struggled a bit this year and are currently 3-6 and 2-2 in the TAAC.
