Overview|2011
Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning. -Maya Angelou

One of the greatest responsibilities we have in life is to teach our young people that their voices will be heard and that they can inspire change. The BOOKORAMA program was created by Arnel Scott to turn that notion into something tangible, something that your students can hold, discuss and act upon collectively. At the core of our 6-8 week program, students are asked ,and in turn discover the answers to three important questions: 1)How will you make your mark? 2)How will you fix your mistakes? 3)How will you colour your world? The emphasis of the program is to make connections between literacy and social action. While students work on brainstorming, writing, editing and designing their books, they are also learning about empowering themselves and others through literacy and art. The outcome of the BOOKORAMA program is that students have both a message and a product that they can be proud of and share with the world.

Process|2011
The Process: 1) Choose a topic of interest or study. 2) Have your students use our graphic organizers to create a 1 or 2 page contribution related to the selected theme. (Please see Themes on the following page.) 3) Have your students use our profile wizard or templates to create and save their author profile. 4) Design a cover that will be used for the entire class. 5) Submit your completed classroom pages and cover artwork in your BOOKORAMA Box. 6) Allow 2-3 weeks for your final book to be delivered to students personally by Arnel D. Scott. Classroom Visits: Lesson 1: Introduction to BOOKORAMA and the publishing process. Lesson 2: The power of words. How words can affect positive change in the world. Lesson 3: Depending on the project the class is creating, we explore elements of graphic design, colour theory, perspective drawing, and cartooning.

Themes|2011
When it comes to creating a compelling classroom book the possibilities are endless. Below are the general areas that we encourage your school to explore.

Have your students create a guide to protecting the environment. You can also explore this topic as a research assignment or a call for others to put words into action...

Environmentalism

Social justice

Students can identify social problems on a global, local, school or household level. Have your students raise questions and/or present solutions.

Multiculturalism
Students can share the rich heritage of their family background with readers, or explore positive aspects of diversity within Canada.

Anti-bullying

Students can explore issues and solutions regarding bullying or share their own experiences to help their peers and/or raise awareness. Have your students explore the character traits possessed by everyday heroes and historical figures. Have them identify traits that they feel are important.

Character

Encourage your students to find the story behind the story. Students compare and contrasts perception vs. reality in the media or review effective advertisements and then create their own!

Media literacy

More Value|2011
The creation of classroom books through the BOOKORAMA program is truly an investment. Look at the many additional ways that you can extend the value of your time and money.

Create school or family of school resources that can be shared. Students in senior grades can turn research projects into books as an alternative to textbooks, etc. Sell the printed books or the Digital Flip Book version as fundraisers to local businesses and parents. Use the BOOKORAMA Flip Book App to have school wide readings at assemblies (use a projector to show the books in the gymnasium). Use the printed books or the BOOKORAMA Flip Book App to display students writing from previous years as writing samples during various writing units. Read pages from your books during morning announce ments to encourage students to make a at school. Reserve a boxed set of your schools books for the library.
