Presentation title: Assessment and Detoxification of Heavy Metals in Children with


Developmental Disorders

Short description:
This presentation will be an overview of current research and clinical evidence of proper
assessment and treatment options for heavy metal toxicity in children with developmental
disorders such as Autism, Asperger syndrome and ADHD.

Abstract:
Learning objectives in the format of presentation outline:
• Review of current published and ongoing research on the implication of heavy metal
toxicity and dysfunctional metabolism of heavy metals in children with Autism and
associated disorders.
• Preliminary testing to determine if a child is a safe candidate for heavy metal chelation
• Assessment options for accurate determination of heavy metal burden in children
• Natural medications that assist in the biotransformation and detoxification of heavy
metals in children
• Treatment with medications for chelation of heavy metals: Dosing and application
options of heavy metal chelators such as DMSA, DMPS and EDTA that are appropriate
for children. Discussion of compounded alternatives such as trans dermal creams,
suppositories, and oral suspensions.
• Intravenous phosphatidylcholine and glutathione as an adjunct to heavy metal
detoxification therapies.

Pharmacy: Basic pharmacology and dosing information will be discussed regarding DMPS,
DMSA and EDTA. Advanced pharmacokinetics will not be discussed in detail.

Biographical sketch:
Dr. Leigh Ann Chapman practices naturopathic medicine in Portland, Oregon. She has a
special focus in pediatric developmental disorders and utilizes both natural and conventional
therapies in the treatment of Autism, Asperger syndrome, sensory integration disorders and
ADHD. Dr. Chapman utilizes the Defeat Autism Now! approach and blends these biomedical
protocols with traditional naturopathic medical philosophy to provide the most comprehensive
treatment for each and every child.
Dr. Chapman is currently involved in clinical research on autism as a condition of
oxidative stress. Specifically, she is studying glutathione replacement therapies in autistic
children. She is also collecting preliminary data on Vitamin D levels in families of children with
autism. Leigh Ann received her bachelor of science from Tulane University. She pursued her
medical degree from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine. She enjoys teaching,
surfing, cooking and gardening.
