Abstract: The majority of medical and industrial linear accelerators (LINACs) in use today operate at S-band. To reduce size and weight, these systems are gradually migrating toward X-band. The new LINACs will require suitable RF components to power them. In anticipation of this market, L-3 Communications Electron Devices Division (EDD) has recently developed a suite of RF sources operating at 9.3 GHz to complement our existing S-band product line. Keywords: klystron; magnetron; solid state amplifier; Xband; 9.3 GHz; high power; linear accelerator; linac. Klystron and Magnetron Description The recently developed L-6145 klystron [1], shown in Figure 1, produces over 5 MW of peak power, and generates up to 20 kW of average power. It is cathode pulsed, operating at a beam voltage of 130 kV and beam current of 84 amperes. Focusing is accomplished via a separate electromagnet. L-3 Electron Devices also manufactures a 100 watt solid state amplifier (Figure 2) that can be used as the RF driver for the klystron. Three coaxial magnetrons have been developed to address the X-band accelerator market. The PM-2000X (Figure 3) operates at 38 kV and 110 A, producing 2.2 MW of peak and 600 W of average power at pulse widths to 2.5 microseconds. Operating at 38 kV and 88 A, the PM1100X has a peak output power of 1.8 MW and an average output power of 1600 W at pulse widths to 4.5 microseconds. For extra long pulse operation, up to 20 microseconds, the PM-450X generates 400 kW of peak and 1200 W of average power at 37 kV and 34 A. Producing these very high power levels within the confines of the relatively small X-band RF interaction circuits presents a formidable challenge. Special measures to moderate the high electric field gradients and to safely dissipate the heat generated within the devices are necessary. A discussion of the simulation tools, design methodology and special considerations made to insure adequate margin will be presented, along with RF performance data.

Additional X-Band Accelerator Products L-3 Electron Devices also manufactures components intended for use in the fabrication of X-band LINACs. These include the newly developed M-5051 high power window and our M-0592 electron guns. A brief overview of these products will also be given.
