Quick Drill Objectives: Identify the distinguishing elements of pre-Columbian Inca Empire Social Studies Standards 2 Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives. Performance Indicator SS2.C.1A: Students define culture and civilization, explaining how they developed and changed over time. Investigate the various components of cultures and civilizations including social customs, norms, values, and traditions; political systems; economic systems; religions and spiritual beliefs; and socialization or educational practices. ELA Standard 4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6 8 texts and topics. Materials: SmartBoard, SmartBoard Presentation, Review Topics Procedures: Do Now: Quick Drill o Have students fold a sheet of paper 2 times and answer questions using one segment of the paper; sheets are held up above their head 1. This empire was made up of City-States (Mayan) 2. This empire grew food in floating gardens (Aztecs) 3. The first Americans traveled across a land bridge that connected these two continents (Asia & North America) 4. The Iroquois were not a single tribe instead they were 6 tribes bound together as this (confederacy) Identify location of Inca Empire o Identify location of Andes Mountains o What impact would geography have on Incan culture? Challenges of growing food in mountains; Terrace farming o Could they have a large empire without food?
