If youve got to this page after reading our monthly Masthead team question (page 38), youll know that the Cosmo team hasnt been particularly victorious with its past New Year resolutions. And were not alone. According to research, a whopping 78% of all resolution-makers fail to meet their goals, and 25% give up in the first week itself! Depressing numbers, I know, but they led me to wonder what the successful 22% did differently. A lot, I learned, and contrary to what you might expect, its got little to do with smarts or will power. Sooo...to prevent the tragic demise of yet another set of NY resolutions, Id like to reveal secrets that will finally help us lose weight/quit smoking/ finish that book/whatever... 1. Its All In the Resolution! If your list of goals includes travelling often, saving money, and spending more time with loved ones, youve already set yourself up for failure. When you aim to do too much, you scatter your energy and reduce chances of success. Instead, concentrate your will on just one concrete goal, and be specific about it. So, for instance, instead of saying I will travel more, resolve to travel in April, August, and December. 2. Dont Rush Into It If you plan to make or break a habit starting first thing tomorrow, I have some bad news for youit wont work. When you rush into a last-minute promise, without prepping for it, youre less likely to see it through. Instead, set goals for two-three months later, and plan how you will meet them when the deadline comes a rollin. It also helps to imagine obstacles you may encounter so you can prepare solutions. 3. Before working on any resolution, you need to read this three-step scientific system thats created to ensure results. 4. Delete Something Else Most of us are already struggling with a packed schedule. You have no idea how the other person is reacting, and before you know it, that initial message snowballs into a full-blown text war. That means you standing still in the middle of a street/ store/party, sending and receiving the kind of texts that can and will be used against you in countless future, lovekilling fights.

Your brain automatically groups together words and phrases so you can expect what the next word will be, says Amador. So instead of carefully scanning the message, your eyes dart to a few key words, and your mind fills in the rest.

So the goal for weight loss is to know which foods keep insulin levels low, and which foods cause them to spike. Remember this: carbohydrates make insulin spike, which causes your body to hold on to fat. And contrary to what you may think, fat actually keeps insulin levels low, which allows you to burn fat...and lose weight. rule number 3 dont StreSS about tHe Fat There are two major reasons youve been told to avoid fat over the years: (1) It has the most calories, which is supposed to mean its fattening, and (2) Its supposed to contribute to heart disease. Both of these reasons are wrong. Large-scale studies of women have shown no evidence that reducing fat in your diet would have any positive effect whatsoever on your health. Plus, fat is the one macro-nutrient in your diet that doesnt stimulate insulin secretion. Im not saying to eat as much fat as possible, but eating bacon and eggs for breakfast is not a crime. And a veggie omelette is a great choiceas long as its not an egg-white omelette, because that eliminates the fat. Remember: despite the negative connotation of the word fat, you do want fat in your diet. rule number 4 aVoid carbS and SuGar Forever fact: foods that are carb-rich and sugar-rich are fattening: pasta, bread, potatoes, sweets, and beer. Women who dont want to be fat just dont eat these foods. Simple as that. But somehow along the way, this rule got lost. These days, with processed and convenience foods so rampant, its not as easy to avoid fattening foods that contain flour and sugar. But if youre eating a bagel for breakfast every day, even if you top it with low-fat cream cheese, youre going to spike your insulin and cause weight gain. And even if youre just putting white sugar in your coffee (note: a brown packet of raw sugar is no healthier, despite what the marketing would have you believe),
again, youre spiking your insulin. If you do need a bit of sweetener in your latte, use Splenda, Equal, or one of the other sugar substitutes. But in my view, its better to wean yourself off your sweet tooth. The less you crave sweets, the easier it will be for you to stay away from fattening carb-rich foods.

Ive just asked about the promotions for her debut film, Barfee, and why she chose to stay in the shadows of co-stars Priyanka and Ranbir instead of, you know, actually promoting herself. Ileana doesnt mince words: You know, a lot of people called me saying that I was so quiet and didnt speak too much during the promotions, and my only excuse was that I didnt have too much to say, she tells me. The fact is, people have to see your work and like it. And if that happens, they will automatically come to you, and ask you, and want to know you better. Ileana DCruz is an example of an actor whose on-screen personality is completely different from who she really is. In Barfee, shes the sweet, simple, demure Shruti, and perhaps that, coupled with her conservative promotion appearances, made me think Ileana was the same. Ive heard of people who have 400 pairs of shoes and I dont understand where they keep them...I have a tough time keeping 70 pairs. And we go back to clothes... With clothes, its the fit that Im very particular about. I think every woman must own a pair of well fitted denims, she says, stressing on must! Ditch the bounce and give your hair a smooth, J Mendel inspired look. Part hair down the middle and use a holding spray only at the crown. Use a fine-toothed comb to create visible lines, then take rest of the hair behind the ears. Use a flat iron over hair sections, both towards and away from the head, producing a natural wavy effect. Tame frizz with a serum like Sebastian Taming Elixir, `1,300.
To achieve this pearl-adorned chignon, as seen at Chanel, prep your hair with a texturising spray gel (we love the Sebastian Professional Texturizer, `1,150) to give it some character. Make a centre part and tie a low ponytail. Divide hair into three sections, then
cross the outer section on each side and secure with elastic, right under the crisscross. Now take the remaining section and pin it underneath. Pin a large pearl (we found pearl clips, at Shoppers Stop, `50 for two) right where the knot meets the nape of your neck.

All you need is a texturising spray (try the label.m Sea Salt Spray, `1,000) and two rubber bands. Spray a texturising spray on almost-dry hair, then blow-dry using fingers. Secure hair with an elastic band at the nape of the neck, then braid and tie hair with a second rubber band. Press the braid between your palms to make it flat. Pull out random sections from the front to make it appear messy.

There was a tonne of shoe chatter as the ladies enjoyed champagne and delish canaps while waiting for their custom-made shoe bags, making it a memorable time, indeed.
