The Company
Alcad LTD is one of the world's major suppliers of nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries for industrial and commercial applications. The company was originally formed in 1920 as Batteries LTD and has since then undergone several name changes, the most recent of which are Chloride Alcad (1971-1983) and Marathon Alcad (1983-1987). In 1988, the company became known as Alcad LTD. Alcad has long established ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified production sites in Sweden, Czech Republic and France. Alcad has a comprehensive sales and service organisation with representation in more than 80 countries worldwide with a total annual turnover of about 40 million Euros. The headquarter is located in Sweden while Alcad have sales offices in United Kingdom, Middle East, Asia and USA.

Products
Alcad LTD offers a wide range of rechargeable NiCd batteries with capacities ranging from 8 1700 Ampere hours. For details please see the Alcad Product Catalogues. Vented NiCd: Alcad traditional pocket-plate NiCd batteries are designed to cover a wide range of duties and include high, medium and general purpose types with capacities from 8 1700 Ah. Cells are available housed in high impact polypropylene or stainless steel containers, depending on the application and operating conditions. The medium rate (MC/MB) and general purpose (LCE/LBE) vented nickel cadmium ranges are suitable for most standby power duties including offshore and marine power supplies, emergency lighting, solar power, security systems, railway signalling, telecommunications, airport runway lighting and emergency power on trains. For discharge periods of between 30 minutes and 3 hours, medium rate cells are ideal; for a discharge period of over 2 hrs, general purpose cells are the most economic choice. The high rate range (HC/HB) is designed for discharge rates between 1 second and 30 minutes and has capacities ranging from 11-920 Ah. They are suitable for applications such as diesel engine and gas turbine starting, uninterruptible power supplies and switchgear. LCE-, LBE-, MC-, MB, HC-, HB-cells are produced in Oskarshamn, Sweden and in Raskovice, The Czech Republic.

Vantage range: Alcad's Vantage range of ultra low maintenance NiCd batteries combines the benefits of sealed cells with the reliability of traditional vented batteries. The ultra low maintenance technology works on the recombination principle in which gas given off during operation is recombined within the cell. Under non-abusive conditions, a negligible amount of water is lost which minimizes the need for maintenance. Vantage has a life expectancy of more than 20 years and an normal operating temperature range of 0C to + 40C. It is available in capacities ranging from 8 - 850 Ah. Typical uses include photovoltaic applications, railway signalling and most standby application including emergency lighting, alarms, telecommunications, process control, switchgear and offshore power supply. The VN-range is produced in Oskarshamn, Sweden and in Raskovice, The Czech Republic. Vantex Range: Vantex is the new low maintenance pocket plate nickel-cadmium battery in the Alcad range. The Vantex New Generation providing optimum, maintenance-free(*) performance. The design is based on the same robust construction and unique electrochemistry that enable Alcad to establish an unrivalled track record for reliability and long life. Vantex is specially adapted for any stationary industrial backup power installation requiring a battery that ensures maximum reliability and TCO (total cost of ownership) while operating for long periods at high ambient temperatures. Typical applications include the utility and oil & gas industries, switching substations and in other remote locations, gaining access for battery maintenance can be difficult, hazardous and expensive. The Vantex cell is available in capacities from 15 Ah to 1700 Ah. The VTX-range is produced in Oskarshamn, Sweden and in Raskovice, The Czech Republic.
The term maintenance-free means that no addition of water is necessary during the lifetime of the product, when following Alcads recommended operating conditions.

Solar Range: Alcad solar range is low maintenance Ni-Cd batteries for stand-alone hybrid systems which provide continuity at any state of charge, and reach a high state of charge without boost or reconditioning charges, which simplifies the complex task of managing charging patterns that is essential to the efficient operation of renewable energy systems. Battery systems have a difficult job maintaining reliable service in isolated locations and hostile environments. Demands upon them fluctuate widely and charging depends entirely on irregular and unpredictable patterns. In remote outdoor installations, Solar is the natural choice for: photovoltaic applications, stand-alone hybrid systems and renewable energy applications. The Solar PV cell is available in capacities from 45 Ah to 1110 Ah. The PV-range is produced in Oskarshamn, Sweden and in Raskovice, The Czech Republic.

Sintered/PBE (Plastic Bonded Electrode) range NiCd: The Alcad XHP-range provides solutions for crucial engine starting applications, cost effective UPS installations and reliable emergency back-up systems. The cell is typically used in cycling applications with short discharge rates (>15 min). The XHP cell is available in capacities from 11 Ah to 320 Ah. The XHP-range is produced in Bordeaux, France.
