PRONOUNS Read the passage: Rama is the hero of the Ramayana.

Rama was the ruler of the Dasaratha Empire. Rama was the son of Dasaratha. Rama married Sita. Ramas brothers name is Lakshmana. Rama was very good-natured. Rama killed Ravana. Rama is considered to be God. How do you feel reading this passage? Doesnt it seem awkward/absurd? What do you feel is awkward in the passage? Using Rama repeatedly in all the sentences. This is where a pronoun comes into picture. A Pronoun is used instead of a noun or another pronoun. Read this passage: Rama is the hero of the Ramayana. He was the ruler of the Dasaratha empire. He was the son of Dasaratha. He married Sita. His brothers name is Lakshmana. He was very good-natured .He killed Ravana. He is considered to be God. What is the change? We have used He instead of Rama in the previous passage. So, the pronoun, HE is used instead of the noun ,RAMA. The different types of pronouns are:

1) Personal Pronouns: "you," "she," "he," "it," "we," "you," "they.", "me," "you," "her," "him," "it," "us," "you," and "them." After reading the newspaper, I threw it into the trash. This is yours.

2) Demonstrative Pronouns: A demonstrative pronoun points to and identifies a noun or a pronoun. "This" and "these" refer to things that are nearby either in space or in time, while "that" and "those" refer to things that are farther away in space or time. This must not continue. Three customers wanted these.

3) Interrogative Pronouns: An interrogative pronoun is used to ask questions. The interrogative pronouns are "who," "whom," "which," "what" and the compounds formed with the suffix "ever" ("whoever," "whomever," "whichever," and "whatever"). 4) Relative Pronouns: The relative pronouns are "who," "whom," "that," and "which." The compounds "whoever," "whomever," and "whichever" are also relative pronouns. The difference between relative and interrogative pronouns are interrogative pronouns are those used in questions while relative pronouns are used in assertive sentences. Whoever broke the window will have to replace it. The man who killed the snake is inside.

5) Indefinite Pronoun: An indefinite pronoun is a pronoun referring to an identifiable but not specified person or thing. Many were invited to the lunch but only ten showed up. We donated everything we found in the attic to the Welfare Committee.. Give a mailing package to each.

6) Reflexive Pronoun: The reflexive pronouns are "myself," "yourself," "herself," "himself," "itself," "ourselves," "yourselves," and "themselves." The Prime Minister himself said that he would lower the prices of petrol.
