Chapter 2 Review For Test Rationale: Students need to know the basic properties of addition because it will help

with their math facts and it is the building block for more complicated math problems. Being able to regroup correctly is very important because it is very rare in the real world that students will have to add and regrouping will not be involved. Plus a calculator will not always be at student's fingertips. Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Objective: Students will be able to use concrete materials and concepts of addition to model the Commutative, Associative, and Identity Properties of Addition. Students will be able to identify the properties of addition and use the properties in problem solving. Students will be able to add numbers using place values to help them with regrouping.

Materials: Commutative Property Tic Tac Toe Board Associative Property Tic Tac Toe Board Race for a Flat Board Dice Chips Smartboard

Introduction: Our math test is on Tuesday and yesterday we talked about some review activities. The activities are different areas we may have struggled with this semester and need some extra practice with. Today everyone will get to do two activities with a teacher. Lesson Development: Using smartboard go over Commutative Property. Discuss what the parts of the number sentence are called. Go over what the Associative Property is. Go over what the Identity Property of Zero is. Students do not need much discussion on this. Go through set of multiple choice questions and have students choose what property to use. Discuss with children regrouping. Ask students how they know when they need to regroup.

Quickly go over the two tic tac board games. When students roll two numbers with the dice they need to explain how to add the numbers in two different ways. Then cover up the sum on the board with a chip. Go over Race For a Flat, you keep rolling/adding until you regroup and get to a flat (100). Students are pre-split up in three different groups based on observations during class work and by looking at the homework. Each group should get to work on two different activities.

Conclusion/Assessment: The formative assessment will be how well the students are doing in their individual groups with the activities. For example I can gage how well the students are doing with regrouping while watching them roll and add. The assessment for this lesson is more of a summative assessment. How well did these activities help the students prepare for the test? I will not be able to gage this until after Tuesday's test.
