Sheep & Goat Sectors Get Food Safety Funding


By Ray Baynton August 14, 2012 The Federal government is helping the sheep and goat industry improve on-farm food safety practices. Parliamentary Agriculture Secretary Pierre Lemieux announced an investment of $289,000 dollars at a sheep farm in North Perth today. Lemieux explains the funds will assist efforts to reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Pierre Lemeiux Parliamentary Secretary For Agriculture industry. The Parliamentary Assistant to the Agriculture Minister was joined by Industry stakeholders and Perth-Wellingtons MP Gary Schellenberger at the Royce farm just south of Listowel yesterday afternoon. The Federal Growing Forward Investment is being made through the Canadian Integrated Food Safety Initiative.

Sheep and goat producers in North Perth are among the first to hear about a new Federal investment in their sectors. Andrew Campbell: The Fresh Air $289,000 dollars will go towards improving the onfarm food safety practices for sheep and goat producers. Canadian Sheep Federation Executive Director Jennifer MacTavish was among those in attendance when the announcement was made at the Royce farm in North Perth this afternoon. She suggests it will help move existing initiatives forward more quickly. Stewart Skinner's The Modern Farmer Project MacTavish # 1 MacTavish says the federal funds will be used to update the food safety system for sheep and roll out the goat industry program to producers.

Myrna Coombs of the Canadian National Goat Federation says theyre asking goat producers to say what theyre doing in terms of management practices then demonstrate it through an audit process. 86 thousand 5 hundred dollars goes to the Canadian Sheep Federation to update that sectors food safety system. Andrew Gordanier of the Canadian Sheep Federation says this process should send a clear message to consumers that they can count on Canadian quality lamb. Both the sheep and goat systems will also undergo a full review by the Canadian Food Inspection Agencys On-Farm Food Safety Recognition program. That funding announcement was made on the Listowel-area farm of Brent Royce yesterday afternoon.
