Examples of the analysis in my essay according to the rubrics bullets 1. Which speech was more effective? What qualities made it so? Example of 1: Atticus finch closing argument is far more effective since he worked with valid information. 2. What forms of rhetoric (ethos/ethics, pathos/emotions and/or logos/logic) were used? 5. What values does the audience hold that the author or speaker appeals to? Example of 2 and 5: Rolfes tries to reach the susceptibility of human emotion and its tendency for fairness and to rectify injustices in his argument by referencing the fact that Jannings has admitted his guilt unlike the many other people that by the same standard of judgment deserve his punishment. : Another example: <mockingbird> 2. Atticus tried to explain to the jury that it was not plausible that Tom beat Mayella. He also attempts to make the jury feel empatheic to Toms actions and to decide was morally right. Atticus told the jury to do what they knew was right and free Tom Robison which to him was a god given duty.

3. In what ways did the message/speech/text succeed in fulfilling the author's or speaker's intentions? 4. How does the author or speaker appeal to reason? to emotion? Example of 3 and 4: This is because Rofle attempts to speak beyond what the court was trying to answer in the question of Ernst Jennings guilt by imploring the judge to be considerate of the fact he wasnt the only one that deserves punishment. However, this is a misdirected argument presented by Rofle, failing to change the outcome to Jannings favor. : Another example: <mockingbird> He also attempts to make the jury feel empatheic to Toms actions and to decide was morally right. Atticus told the jury to do what they knew was right and free Tom Robison which to him was a god given duty. Atticuss well thought closing argument didnt change the verdict of the case but it did leave an impingement on the people of Maycomb County.

6. How does he/she come across? Knowledgeable? Fair? Example of 6: However, this attempt is in vain because by the same respect of human nature, Ernst Janning should have realized his fallibility before going along with the movement that exemplified the antithesis of compassion and understanding. : Another example: <mockingbird> Atticuss closing argument was thought provoking since he provided several examples why Tom Robinson was arrested. He gave explanations on why Mayella had the intentions for him to go to

prison. . Atticuss well thought closing argument didnt change the verdict of the case but it did leave an impingement on the people of Maycomb County.

7. How does the speaker's reputation convey a certain authority? Example of 7: Hans Rolfe, a man dedicated to the principle of justice, couldnt abandon a man who exemplified the exact opposite nature of his work, but the inconsistency of the argument for his client meant he was fighting a battle he couldve never won. : Another example: <mockingbird> Atticus developed a strong cohesive closing argument which left a huge impact on the town as a whole. Atticuss ambition to free Tom Robinson made him revered again by Maycomb.
