Poetry Unit Test

For this test, you may use any materials that you already have. You WILL need your poems packet for this test. Please do not write on the test.

Section 1 (30 points):


Go to The Tide lines 28-33: 1. Write down 3 examples of Alliteration 2. Write down 3 examples of Assonance Go to Blood lines 1-21: 3. Write down 3 examples of Metaphor 4. Write down 1 example of Simile Go to The Road Not Taken: 5. Write down the rhyme scheme. (Take up ONE line on your piece of paper) Example: ABAB CDCD EBEB FDGD Go to And Now Im Nothing 6. What is the tone of this poem? The tone is most likely an adjective. Find two quotes (whether words or lines) to support your answer. You must use complete sentences. Example: The tone of We Wont Bury You is solemn (having or showing a serious manner) because: 1) The line we wont bury you suggests the narrator has a serious manner about helping his friend. 2) The line of where you went wrong suggests something serious has happened. 3) The line that you know better than this suggests the narrator isnt letting his friend off of the hook. The narrator is treating the situation in a serious way.

Section 2 (20 points):


Pick any 2 of these questions and write at least three sentences. You must use complete sentences: 7. How do we find a deeper meaning in poetry? 8. Compare and contrast poetry to music videos (at least 2 advantages for each) 9. How does form change how we write poetry? 10. How did the tone of your imitation translation change from the original version? Extra Credit is on the back

Extra Credit (5 points each): Question 1: If you answered this for optional assignment number one, you may staple the assignment to this test. Step 1: Pick two of your Haikus and determine the meaning of them. For each one ask yourself, what does it mean? What is it about? If I didnt write it, how would I interpret it? Step 2: Switch the middle lines of your Haikus. Step 3: Answer the two following questions- (Write a paragraph for each) How does form change how we write poetry? How does form change what our poetry means? Question 2: Pick any poet or poem weve worked with this unit. Pick one quote from that poet/poem and write two sentences about how that quote changed what you knew about poetry. Question 3: Pick which option you agree with more and write two sentences as to why. A: People should write poetry based on how others will read their poetry B: People should read poetry based on how a poet wants the poem read
