Proposal : Proposed Bicycle Lanes at Merryland Park and Pasir Garden

1.0

Rational These days our health is our main concern. Exercise has been proven to keep one healthy and fit. A cheap form of exercise that is fast gaining popularity among our youth today is cycling. Cycling will keep our youth out of trouble and at the same time keep them healthy. At the moment there are many children and youngsters on their bicycles around these two housing estates. Unfortunately, they are cycling on the road and this is dangerous to both the cyclist and motorist. The loser is always the cyclist. We do not want any tragedies on our roads A informal survey has been conducted in these housing estates and it is found that 71% of household has at least one bicycle and nearly half of that with more than one bicycle. This means that there are many cyclists in these two housing estates. A safe environment for these cyclists is a must in the near future. Our community association hopes that the Serian District Council will give a green light for a bicycle lane to be constructed around Merryland Park and Pasir Garden. Our community association will take full responsibility for the construction and maintenance of the bicycle lane.

Concept A 4 foot way be built around the selected areas of Merryland Park and Pasir Garden. It will be joined and the cyclist will not have to cross the roads but be on the bicycle lanes at all times. This will enable cyclists to cycle safely . Merryland and Pasir were chosen as it is not on the main highway and therefore the construction of the proposed 4 foot way will not disturb traffic. Having a bicycle lane will also encourage more children to take up the habit of cycling and thus getting enough exercise. Parents will also worry less as their children will be safer on the 4 foot way rather than on roads. Parents, too can join their children cycling. Construction and maintenance will be the full responsibility of our community association.

Resource Our Member of Parliament, Datuk Rick Chaos has agreed to support the construction and has pledged RM500,000 and will help to get extra funding for the cycle path, if necessary. Our local businessman, Mr. Leondry has pledged RM100,000 for the proposed project. Kana Construction whose owner is also a member of our association will undertake the construction work once given the green light.
