FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard. (Part I) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 15 June 1971, after the draft finalized by the Lifting Chains and Associated Fittings and Componetits Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council. 0.2 This part covers. the general requirements for shackles, while the requirements regarding workmanship, finish, proof loading, marking and certification are covered in detail, in the case of dimensions only the range of dimensions and the applicable tolerances have been covered. Actual dimensions are covered in other parts of the standard which are under preparation. Part II of the standard covers the Dee shackles and Part III, the bow shackles. 0.3 Information to be provided with an enquiry and order and recommendations regarding suitable materials are given in Appendix A and ,L\ppendix l3 respectively. 0.4 In the preparation of this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from the Draft IS0 Proposal for Shackles : General Characteristics, Dot : ISO/TC 8 ( WG 2-3) 461, prepared by the Technical Committee ISO/TC 8 and ISO/TC 111 of the International Organization fol Standardization. Reference has also been made to Dot: ISO/TC 11 l/SC 3 ( Seer-30 ) 73 - Second Draft IS0 Proposal for Dee Shackles and Dot : ISO/TC 11l/SC 3 (Seer-34) 74-Draft IS0 Proposal filr bow shackles. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is ccmplied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number cf significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard (Part dimensions, workmanship, _,.___.__ -_.-.,..-- _.-.I) covers the requirements finish, proof loading, marking for the range of and certifications.

4. MATERIAL
4.1 Materials-The steel used in the manufacture of the body and pin shall be produced by the open hearth or electric process or any of the oxygen-blown processes and having a minimum tensile strength of 42 kgf/ mm2 in the case of grade 30 (IS0 Equivalent grade L), a tensile strength of 55 kgf/mm2 to 68 kgf/mms in the case of grade 40 (IS0 Equivalent grade M) and a minimum tensile strength of 80 kgf/mma in the case of grade 63 (IS0 Equivalent grade S) shackles. 4.1.2 The steel used is to be fully killed and is to contain not less than 0.020 percent of aluminium, sulphur and phosphorus content not to exceed 0.050 percent and 0.045 percent respectively. 4.2 Any steel which meets these requirements and when suitably heattreated in the form of the finished shackle meets the specific requirements with regard to the mechanical properties, may be used. Suitable steels are given in Appendix B for information. 4.3 When so required by the purchaser, the manufacturer shall supply a copy of the steel makers cast analysis for the steel used in the manufacture of shackles and shackle pins.

4.4 Hardness

-The Brinnel hardness of the body and pin after heat treatment shall not exceed the following values when tested in accordance with IS : 1500-1968: Grads Minimum

Maximum 170 217 302

6.1 The screw threads shall conform to IS :4218-l 967*. 7. WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

7.1 The bodies of the shackles shall be solid forgings,.without weld. .Pin or bolt holes in the bodies shall be drilled from the solid or hot pierced to twothirds finished size and in all cases drilled or boredGn axial alignment, at one setting central to the outside diameter of the eyes. 7.1.X The pins shall be forged and machined, or machined from the bar. The screwed portion of the pin shall be concentric with the main portion of the body of the pin. When a screw pin is screwed home, not more than one half thread,is to be visible between.the~jaws of the shackles.

a) Normalizing by heating to a temperature within 50 deg above the upper critical point of the steel used, followed by cooling in still air. b) Hardening and tempering by heating to temperature within 50 deg above the upper critical point of the steel used followed by quenching in oil brine or water and tempering. 8.2 Details of heat treatment which has been given to the shac!:les during manufacture shall be endorsed on the makers test certi(icate. 9. IRQOP LQADI[NG

9.1. Each shackle after manufacture and subsequent heat treatment shall be subjected to the proof 10~iding of the value on which the design is based, applied at the centre of the pin by means of a round link or pin to which it shall withstand without showing permanent set. After removal of the proof load each shackle shall be thoroughly examined by a competent person and shall be accepted only if found free from visible flaw or defect. 10. INSPE@TI[ON, TEST AND EXAMINATION

10.1 The representative of the purchaser shall have access to the works of the manufacturer at all reasonable times for the purpose of witnessing the specified tests and inspecting the testiiig machine and methods of examination. 10.2 The manufacturer or supplier shall provide a certificate .with each consignment of shackle giving the following information for each consignment: a) Type of material and details of heat treatment, bj Distinguishing mark to enable the particular identified, c) Proof load applied, and d) Working load. shackle to be

The certificate may be the appropriate statutory form provided that the required information is gi.ven. 11. MARKING 11.1 Grade Marking - The body of each shackle and the head of each pin shall be legibly and parmanently marked, with the grade of material from which it has been fabricated Grade 30 shackle. 11.2 Identification Marking - Each shackle body shall be permanently and legibly marked with the safe working load and with such individual marks and symbols as will provide indentification with the makers certificate of test and examination. 11.3 Inspection MarkingWhen the test results are satisfact.ory the Inspector shall stamp the shackle with the inspection mark. 11.3.1 The shackles may. also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.
is governed by the provisions of Act, and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. Preence of this mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard, under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and qtialic; control during production. This system, which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer, has the further safeguard that the products as actually marketed are continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to the standard. Details of conditions, under which a Iicence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to the manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
