3 (6) Draft 0.0.2

The purpose of the document is to describe the configuration of frequency hopping into GSM/GPRS emulator system connected to real BTS. Refer to 2 for more information on configuration parameters of emulators. 2. CONFIGURATION GUIDE NRC/MNW Mika Forssell, Sampo Saaristo 3. RADIO CONFIGURATION FOR BTS 27.04.2004

4 (6) Draft 0.0.2

The configuration of BTS is done with OMBSC process. The used radio frequencies i.e. cell allocation are listed in bts_x.dat file for each sector of BTS. The hopping mode is set to 1 for Baseband Hopping and to 2 for RF hopping.
Table 1: Cell allocation for OMBSC and BTS

The hopping parameters are set for each timeslot in trx_x.dat files.
Table 2: Trx configuration for OMBSC and BTS

When more than one TRX is used for hopping, note that MAIOs need to be different between same radio timeslots in a hopping group. This is easily achieved by configuring different MAIO to each timeslot of the other TRX(s). In this example each timeslot could have MAIO = 1 in trx_2.dat. After configuration changes BTS is reseted by macro oMore information about OMBSC can .m r be found from 2. 4. EMULATOR CONFIGURATION FOR GPRS This chapter describes how to configure frequency hopping into GPRS emulator system. 4.1 Common Table 3 describes cell specific configuration of frequency hopping that is used both by PCUBSC and PCUMS processes. BTS section in the struct_2g.db file may include zero, one or more frequency hopping configurations.
Table 3: Frequency hopping configuration in PCUMS

The first frequency hopping configuration starts with an index of 0 (ma_number_0 and frequency_list_0). The next configurations use subsequent indexes (1, 2, etc.). Ma_number defines GPRS Mobile Allocation (GPRS MA). GPRS MA contains frequency hopping information, like radio frequencies used in frequency hopping, hopping sequency number (HSN), etc. In case PBCCH is present in the cell, GPRS MA is included in Packet System Information 2 (PSI2) message(s) (0 <= MA_NUMBER <= 13). In case PBCCH is not present in the cell, GPRS MA is included in System Information 13 (SI13) message (MA_NUMBER=14). Frequency_list defines radio frequencies used in the frequency hopping. Frequency_list shall contain the same radio frequencies that are included into the GPRS MA included in (P)SI messages and the order of the radio frequencies shall be the same as in GPRS MA in (P)SI messages. Currently only indirect encoding of frequency hopping parameters is supported. Indirect encoding means that frequency hopping parameters refer to GPRS MA that is transmitted in PSI2 or SI13 message

5 (6) Draft 0.0.2

The network assigns frequency hopping parameters to a MS in an assignment message. When PCUMS receives an assignment message indicating frequency hopping, PCUMS uses MA_NUMBER for referencing correct frequency hopping parameters (GPRS MA) defined in struct_2g.db (Table 3). After finding correct GPRS MA, PCUMS uses MAIO to find the TRX whichs Abis resources are used to transfer RLC/MAC blocks to and from the MS. For example if MAIO=1 and parameters defined in Table 3. are used, PCM resources associated to used PDCHs and with TRX containing ARFCN=2 definition are used to transfer RLC/MAC blocks between BTS and PCU. 4.3 PCUBSC and GBSC When PCU selects radio resources for uplink or downlink TBF, PCU checks if frequency hopping applies to assigned radio resources. In case frequency hopping has been configured for the selected radio resources, PCU indicates frequency hopping to a MS in an Assignment message. Besides of configuring frequency hopping parameters defined in Table 3, also GPRS MA shall be defined in PSI2 or SI13 message. Cell allocation shall contain radio frequencies to be used in frequency hopping. 4.3.1 PBCCH is present in the cell In case PBCCH is present in the cell, GPRS MA included into PSI2 message(s) shall be used. Reference frequency lists shall contain frequencies to be used in frequency hopping (as defined for cell allocation in Table 3). GPRS MA shall then refer to configured reference frequency list for frequencies used in frequency hopping. Table 4 describes PSI2 configuration for frequency hopping.
Table 4. Frequency hopping configuration of PSI2 message.

4.3.2

PBCCH is not present in the cell In case PBCCH is not present in the cell, GPRS MA included into SI13 shall be used. GBSC cheks whether MA_NUMBER 14 is configured and includes the GPRS MA description to SI13 if this is the case. Table 5 describes GPRS MA configuration of SI13 message.

Table 5. Frequency hopping configuration of SI13 message.

SI13_CHANGE_MARK is used to notify modifications made to GPRS MA to MSs. CHANGE_MARK_1 may be given to a MS in an assignment message and the MS shall use the field to verify that it contains the latest GPRS MA information being broadcast in SI13 message. Currently GPRS MA doesnt include or exclude any radio frequency. This means that radio frequencies defined for cell allocation (CA) shall be used for frequency hopping

EMULATOR CONFIGURATION FOR GSM This chapter explains the configuration of frequency hopping to GSM emulators.

5.1

Frequency list in System Information Type 1 Table 6 describes SI1 configuration. Radio frequencies to be used in frequency hopping shall be defined in cell allocation. The format defines the coding of reference frequency list. All six formats are supported by GBSC.

Table 6: Frequency hopping configuration of SI1 message.

5.2

Frequency hopping parameters for each timeslot Frequency hopping parameters for each timeslot of TRX are defined separately.

Fields for hpg MAIO:HSN:maflag:format_id:freq1:freq2: are , where mfa whether GBSC should use Frequence List or Mobile opx io n _ _ t l s tells ag l :freqN Allocation IE when assigning MS to the channel in question. The for defines the coding of mat_id frequency list (if used), and the following fields define the frequencies used for hopping on the channel. These frequencies must be a subset of Cell Allocation.
