Migraines The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke explains that migraines are a form of headache, with

pain typically limited to a specific region of the head and accompanied by neurological symptoms. Associated symptoms may include visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting and hypersensitivity to sound or light. The Migraine Research Foundation reports that approximately 6 percent of men and 18 percent of women in the United States have migraines. People age 25 to 55 are most commonly affected

The electrical disturbances provoke seizure activity. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, medical and surgical interventions successfully control seizure activity in approximately 80 percent of people with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation notes that approximately 3 million Americans are living with epilepsy, including 326,000 children. Medical conditions that increase the risk for epilepsy include Alzheimer's disease, stroke, cerebral palsy and mental retardation. A family history of epilepsy also increases the level of risk for the disorder.

Blocked arteries or blood vessel hemorrhages may lead to stroke. The American Heart Association points out that approximately 87 percent of strokes occur due to blockage in a brain artery. The symptoms and severity of a stroke depend on the size and location the affected area. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that stroke is the third most common cause of death in the United States. Nearly 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year. Risk factors for stroke include advancing age, smoking, inactivity, obesity, elevated blood cholesterol and diabetes mellitus.

Buildup and clumping of the brain protein tau interrupts brain cell activity. Eventually brain cells lose their connections with one another and die. Early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include memory disturbances and decreased capacity for complex thought and planning. As the disease progresses, personality changes occur and motor skills deteriorate. The National Institute on Aging claims that as many as 5.1 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, with the majority older than age 60. Medications can help alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Progression of the disease, however, proves unaffected by symptomatic therapy.
