Bunker tanks containing fuel oil are to be distinctly marked by painting a white stripe across the deck indicating location of the bulkhead and stenciled : DANGER OIL No Welding or Hot works. Before hot works is scheduled, local cleaning must be carried out, with Staging as required, to thoroughly remove all oil residue and remaining sediment at the site of the hot work and in surrounding areas, wherever heat may be applied or hot materials may fall. If hot work is to be done on or near a tank bulkhead, the area on the other side must be similarly cleaned. When it comes necessary to weld on an existing reinforcing plate, special precautions must be taken to ensure that the space between the plate and steel surface to which it is welded is free of gas. 1.8 GAS FREE CERTIFICATES

During the vessels stay in the yard or repair berth, the chemist or certified personnel is to test all relevant spaces daily and issue certificate with 4 copies. Any variation in the condition of the vessel is to be brought out to the attention of the attending Tech. Superintendent and Terminal Manager or Tech. Manager. All bunker tanks, cofferdam etc. are to be tested for gas by a certified Chemist/personnel and a Certificate is issued before any work will be started. The work area is to be roped off and the Tech. Superintendent and Chief Engineer notified in order that ventilation may be shut-down and ships crew warned to avoid the area while insulation work is in progress. Prior to removing asbestos for access to valves, piping or machinery casings, the insulation is to be thoroughly dampened with water to prevent fibers and dust from saturating the surrounding air. Asbestos insulation must be carefully cut and removed in blocks; insulation is not, repeat not to be ripped out, which causes the release of fibers into the air. Immediately place removed block sections in disposable bags, seal and removed it from the vessel. Areas surrounding the work site are to be well clean and wetted down prior to, during and immediately following repairs. (Care must be taken that all electrical equipment are well protected from moisture and that hot surfaces will not be doused with water). Do not use brooms or brushes. Clean up should be by vacuum units with exhaust filters designed to contain asbestos fibers. Removed asbestos insulation is not to be replaced with more asbestos.
