Dear Parents On behalf of the Governing Body I welcome you to St Augustines Catholic Primary School I would like to take this opportunity to briefly explain the role of the governing body. The Governing Body and Headteacher work together in partnership, the main focus being on raising standards of educational achievement. We are continuously monitoring and evaluating progress and are committed to improving our school so that our children will learn and flourish. The Governing Body is here to help fulfil St. Augustine's Mission statement, which is "In St Augustines we always try to do our best. Together, we work hard and play fairly, praying and caring for everyone as Jesus taught us." You'll find in your welcome pack, a letter regarding contributions to the Governor's Fund. I would like to mention that being a Catholic school, the governing body is responsible for 10% of the cost of all improvements and maintenance of the school premises and your contributions to the Governor's Fund would be appreciated. OUR SCHOOL
St Augustines is a two form entry school, offering 53 nursery and 420 full time places. Children come from our four parishes: St Augustines, St John Vianney, St John the Baptist and The Assumption Parish. St Augustines Infant and Junior Schools became a Primary School in 1986. Our Nursery was built in 1990 and provides a spacious and stimulating internal and external environment for the children. The Infant Department based in Loudoun Avenue has six classrooms, an IT suite, Library and hall. The playground area has been developed through fund raising organised by our Playground Improvement Project. The Junior Department is next to St Augustines Parish Church. It has two floors, with eight classrooms, IT Suite, Library and hall. We have recently increased teaching and office space in the infant and junior building. As a voluntary aided school the Governors, on behalf of the Parish are responsible for meeting 10% of the costs of capital expenditure on the upkeep and improvement school buildings to help meet this obligation. Families of children at the school are asked to make a minimum voluntary contribution of 20 per term.

SCHOOL MISSION & AIMS The cause of Catholic Education is the cause of Jesus Christ at the service of man, Pope John Paul II. St. Augustine`s School is a community founded and based securely upon our Christian Faith. Purpose - Our primary purpose is to provide the very best education for Catholic children in an atmosphere that is congenial to the Catholic faith. We must, therefore, provide the experience of a Christian community at worship, at work and at leisure. Aims - We provide a broad, balanced curriculum, which promotes the spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional and physical development of each child and will help to prepare him or her for the opportunities and responsibilities of subsequent phases of life. We also believe that Every Child Matters. GOVERNING BODY The Governing Body consists of a group of volunteers from various backgrounds and with different areas of expertise. It is responsible and accountable in law and in practice for major decisions about the school and its future. The Governing Body, therefore, plays an important role in supporting and assisting the Headteacher and the Senior Management Team to promote high standards both in educational achievement and in all areas of school life including safeguarding the Catholic ethos of the school. The Governing Body reviews regular reports from the Headteacher as well as feedback from external inspections and visits (OFSTED and LA). It also receives regular reports from its Teaching & Learning Sub-Committee which is responsible, amongst other things for monitoring how the National Curriculum is taught, evaluated and resourced. The Resources Sub-Committee reports on all financial matters including building/grounds maintenance and Health & Safety. The Governing Body is also responsible for the schools Admissions Policy. Each Governor is linked either to a Subject Co-ordinator, Standards Manager and/or Area Coordinator with whom they meet on a termly basis. They each formally visit the school on an annual basis (in consultation with the Headteacher) to improve their understanding of the priorities and needs of the school and to establish good links with staff, pupils and parents. They also visit informally e.g. for Assemblies, Masses and Concerts. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL AND ADDITIONAL NEEDS We believe in St. Augustines School that each pupil has individual and unique needs. Our guiding principle is one of inclusion within a caring and supportive atmosphere. However, some pupils require more support than others. If these pupils are to achieve their potential, we must recognise this and plan accordingly. When a teacher first thinks a child may have special educational needs they will look at how they can adapt and differentiate their teaching. The childs progress will be closely monitored. If the teacher thinks a particular child needs additional support he/she will talk to the Inclusion Manager who may suggest other strategies the teacher can use in the classroom. Parents are invited to a meeting at school to discuss their childs needs. It might be decided that the child requires additional support with an Individual Education Plan (IEP).This is called School Action. The targets will be reviewed at least twice a year. If the child does not make adequate progress, the Inclusion Manager will ask for advice from other agencies including the Educational Psychologist or the specialist teaching services. The parents are always informed of assessments and invited to attend meetings with all professionals involved. This stage is called School Action Plus. If a child does not make progress despite all the advice and support the Inclusion Manager will apply to the Childrens Services to carry out a Statutory Assessment to decide whether the child needs a statement. All statements are reviewed annually in consultation with parents. Inclusion No child will be treated less favourably because of a disability or special needs. Each application for admissions of pupils with disabilities will be considered using our normal admissions criteria. St. Augustines School will make reasonable provision for children with disabilities and is continuously improving and monitoring access to the school and the curriculum for all children. Existing Facilities for Pupils with Disabilities Existing facilities include: disabled toilets in both Infant and Junior School as well as an adjustable toilet seat and handrail in an Infant classroom. The school has some ramps into Infant classrooms and into the Junior School side entrance. There are handrails in the Junior corridor, into the Junior hall and into the playground. Accessibility Plan The school has an accessibility plan which includes further access arrangements such as colour coding, fire alarms with flashing lights, workstations for children with Autism and ADHD. The Disability Equality Scheme St Augustines School has made a positive commitment to valuing diversity. We are committed to making our school a better place to work and learn. This will be achieved by promoting equality of opportunity and eliminating unlawful discrimination for all our employees, all of our pupils and their parents. St Augustines School takes its duties under the Disability Discrimination Act seriously and seeks to prevent discrimination. We have consulted parents, staff and pupils and our plans for fulfilling our duties under the Disability Equality Duty are set out within the Disability Equality Scheme. Admission Arrangements and Criteria for the School Year 2013/14 Basic Information 1. St Augustines Catholic Primary School is situated in the Diocese of Brentwood and is maintained by the London Borough of Redbridge Local Education Authority. 2. The Governing Body of the school is responsible for determining and administering the policy relating to the admission of pupils to the school. It is guided in that responsibility by the requirements of the law, by the advice of the Diocesan Trustees, and its duty to the school and the Catholic community. The school primarily serves the parishes of St Augustine of Canterbury, Barkingside; St John Vianney, Clayhall; St John the Baptist, Ilford and The Assumption, Hainault (details of Parish boundaries can be obtained from the relevant Parish Priest or Diocesan Offices) Having consulted the LEA and others in accord with the requirements of the law, the Governing Body has set as its planned admission number 60 pupils for the school year commencing September 2013. Parents wishing to apply for a place in the school for their child in the school year 2013/2014 must complete a Common Application Form (CAF) available from 1st September 2012 from both the Local Authority and school, and return it by the date determined by the Local Authority in accordance with the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme. It should be carefully noted that all applications must be submitted on these forms and all applications will be considered at the same time. A separate form, Priest Reference Form (PRF) to confirm Catholicity will be available to download from our school website or may be collected from the school office. On receipt of the application pack, parents must make an appointment as soon as possible to see their Priest or religious leader and take the Diocesan Priests Form with them. Parents should complete Part A Self-Assessment and Information about the Child in advance of the appointment. After the discussion, parents will leave the form with their Priest or religious leader. The Priest or religious leader will then complete and return Part B Priests Reference ONLY directly to the Admissions Secretary, at the school. The timescale is very tight because of the Governments Code of Practice on Co-ordinated Admissions. Part A will be retained by the Priest or religious leader or possibly returned to parents. A Supplementary Information Form (SIF) which is included in the Local Authority booklet must also be returned to the school. Note for non-Catholic religious leaders: The Diocesan Priests Form is the one used by Catholic Priests in the Redbridge area, but if you find that it does not suit your situation precisely, you may adapt the form or add any further comments which you think are appropriate. There is also an Other Faith Form available in the Admissions Booklet or from the School Office. Without the Supplementary Information Forms, Priest Reference Forms or Other Faith forms, we will be unable to confirm Catholicity or other faith, and a child will therefore automatically be considered under Category 9. 5 (b) 6. In accord with the provisions of Regulation 49 of the Education (School Government) Regulations 1999, the Governing Body has delegated responsibility for determining admissions to its Admissions Committee. Pupils who are admitted to the school will enter the reception class(es) in September 2013.

As required by law, the Governing Body will not admit more than 30 pupils to any one reception or infant class. Criteria The Schools admissions policy should reflect its purpose of serving its relevant Catholic community. The following criteria are designed to acknowledge that responsibility of the Governing Body. Therefore, when considering applications, the Admissions Committee will apply the following criteria in order of priority. The Governing Body of St. Augustines Catholic Primary School will apply the following criteria fairly and equitably to all applications for places in the order of priority stated. 1. Looked after and legally adopted children from Catholic families, this includes previously looked after children (Schools admissions Code para 1.7) 2. Baptised Children, of practising Catholic families(*) (**) who are resident in the Parishes of St. Augustine of Canterbury, Barkingside; St John the Baptist, Ilford; St John Vianney, Clayhall and The Assumption Hainault. 3. Baptised Children of practising Catholic families who are resident in neighbouring parishes at the time of application. 4. Baptised Catholic children whose parents do not attend Mass regularly, but who desire a Catholic education for their child(ren). 5. Other looked after children, this includes previously looked after children (Schools admissions Code para 1.7). 6. Children who have at least one Catholic parent and who are to be Baptised within 6 months of closing date of applications. Supporting evidence will be required. 7. Baptised children of other Christian denominations at least one of whose parents regularly practice in their faith and whose application is supported by the appropriate Minister of Religion. In such cases the parent(s) must be sympathetic to and supportive of the Catholic ethos of the school. 8. Children of non-Christian denominations at least one of whose parents regularly practice in their faith and whose application is supported by the appropriate Faith Leader of Religion. In such cases the parent(s) must be sympathetic to and supportive of the Catholic ethos of the school. 9. Any other applicants whose parents/carers are in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the school. * The term Practising in relation to the Catholic Faith refers to obligations laid on Catholics by the Code of Canon Law primary that of the obligations to assist at Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of obligation (Canon 1247). ** A baptized Catholic is one who has been baptized [even conditionally (Canon 869)] into the Catholic Church in accordance with Canon 849 and whose parents(s) / carer(s) can produce a valid certificate that this is so. *** Regularity of Mass attendance by at least one parent will be a determining factor in the prioritisation of applications. Regularity will be determined from the Priests reference. **** The term Looked After Children refers to children in public care within the meaning of s22 of the Childrens Act 1989. This provision relates to children in the care of the Local Authority or provided with accommodation by a Local Authority, Social Services Dept, e.g. children with foster parents.

Deferred Entry: Admission authorities must allow parents of children who are offered a place at the school before they are of compulsory school age to defer their childs entry until later in the school year. Where entry is deferred, admission authorities must hold the place for that child and not offer it to another child. The parent/ carer would not, however, be able to defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the childs fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted. The school will accommodate both / all twins / multiple births if we admit one. Parents / carers of prospective children to St Augustines Catholic Primary School are welcome to contact the school to arrange a visit and meet with the Headteacher at a mutually convenient time. In the event of over-subscription in the number of applications, then the Admissions Committee will offer places in the following order of precedence for each level of priority (below): Children who (i) have a sibling at the school at the school at the time of likely admission. Sibling refers to brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister or step brother or sister. (ii) The shortest measured walking distance from the childs home to school, using public roads and footpaths, is used to give priority to applicants. (iii) In the event of there being a tie regarding our admissions criteria, there will be a lottery tie break undertaken by the Local Authority with a member of St Augustines Admissions Committee present. Additional Information 1. The parents of those children whom the Admission Committee have agreed to admit as pupils at the school will be informed, in writing, by the Local Authority in accordance with the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme. Last date for offers to be accepted by parents will be determined by the Local Authority in accordance with the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme. 2. The parents of those children whose application for a place in the school was unsuccessful will be informed, in writing by the Local Authority in accordance with the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme with reasons for the Admissions Committees not offering a place and a description of the rights of the parents to lodge an appeal against the decision including detail of how and to whom such an appeal should be lodged. 3. Applications received after the deadline will be considered in accordance with the admissions criteria, but after those submitted on time. Please Note: A Priest Reference Form (PRF) is available from the school. Part A is a self evaluation to be completed by the parent / carer. Part B will be completed by the Priest once you have met with him. These forms do not form part of the Schools Admission Arrangement.

FINANCE AND LOCAL MANAGEMENT OF SCHOOLS As the school is voluntary aided, financial responsibility is split between the London Borough of Redbridge and the Governing body (via the Diocese of Brentwood). The budget for the day to day running of the school is delegated from Redbridge to the Governing body. Last year this amounted to over 1.5 million. This is an important responsibility for the Governing body, but is also an opportunity to ensure that the money available is used to greatest effect for all the pupils. As a school we are able to establish long term plans as well as deal effectively with short term needs. The responsibility for the day-to-day management of the budget is delegated to the Headteacher who works closely with our finance officer and the officers of the LA education finance department. The Governing Body Finance Committee meets regularly with the Headteacher to review the financial position. There are always special projects and particular resource items, which are beyond the means of the normal school budget. We are therefore constantly grateful for the fund raising activities of the PTA and the enthusiasm which parents show in their support for the school. In addition, due to the school`s Voluntary Aided status, the Governing Body is responsible for any improvements and all exterior maintenance. Grant aid up to a maximum of 90% of the total is available from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). To enable us to fulfil our responsibility to fund the remainder of the costs we maintain a Governors` Fund, to which parents are invited to contribute on a regular basis. There is no compulsion to contribute - we merely ask that those who feel able should assist us in this way. In recent years the fund has helped us to greatly improve the learning environment and provide greater security for the children and staff. Governors` Charging Policy The Governing body reserve the right to request donations from parents to offset charges to the school budget for visits and activities which enhance the education provided for their children and to pass on charges to parents for extra curricular activities provided for their children by commercial organisations. Further information regarding our Charging Policy may be found on the School website or is available from the School Office. There is no charge for education provided during school hours, except for instrumental music tuition in small groups, i.e. up to a maximum of four per group. This tuition is provided by the Redbridge Music School. Many parents would like their child to learn a musical instrument, but if they find the fees prohibitive, they are urged to discuss this matter with the Headteacher to find out what support is available.

ORGANISATION OF THE SCHOOL Many of our pupils are fortunate enough to spend a year or more in our Nursery class prior to entering the Reception classes in the Infant Department. The Nursery has two sessions, morning and afternoon. Full details are available in the Nursery Handbook. A childs primary school Education is divided into three Key Stages. Children are admitted into a Reception class in the Early Years Department in September. The time spent in this class is described as YEAR R, the last year of the Foundation Stage. Subsequent years are described as YEARS 1-6. Stage Foundation / Early Years Key Stage 1 Key Stage 2 Years Nursery & Year R Years 1 & 2 Years 3,4,5 & 6

Each year group is organised into two parallel mixed ability classes. The teaching staff jointly plan a curriculum. Children in the Foundation Stage will be working towards the Early Learning Goals. Most children should be able to reach these by the end of reception. This will prepare them for work on the national curriculum at Key Stage 1 in primary school. EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE In September 2012 a new Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage will be introduced. In this new framework changes have been made to the areas of learning that your child will have experienced in their previous setting. The new areas of learning are listed below. These areas of young childrens development will be covered in the Nursery and Reception classes. The Prime areas of learning (The important building blocks of learning) Communication and language development - involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Physical development - involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Personal, social and emotional development - involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

The Specific areas of learning Literacy development - involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Mathematics - involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. Understanding the world - involves guiding children to make sense of their world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Expressive arts and design - involves providing opportunities for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM The Education Reform Act, 1988, requires that children aged 5 years begin to follow programmes of study in a range of subject areas in addition to Religious Education. These National Curriculum subjects are sub-divided into Core and foundation subjects as follows:CORE SUBJECTS FOUNDATION SUBJECTS Mathematics, English, Science and IT Technology, Music, History, Geography, Art and Design, Physical Education and Personal, Social and Citizenship Education

Within each area of the curriculum we will seek to fulfil the aims of the school. While offering a broad and balanced curriculum we place special emphasis on Religious Education, Literacy and Numeracy. HOMEWORK Homework provides a valuable link between home and school and gives parents an insight into primary school maths and how their children cope with different maths concepts. Homework is usually sent home on Thursday, to be returned on the following Monday, when it will be reviewed in class and any misconceptions clarified. Homework activities may act as a starting point for the exploration of concepts or reinforce or extend work which has been taught in class during the week. Further details about our Policy are available on the school website. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES We aim to provide each child, irrespective of race, gender, cultural background or disability with every opportunity to develop their skills and aptitudes so that they reach their potential. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES We organise a variety of after school clubs throughout the year including: football, netball, dance, gymnastics, film club, Spanish, choir and orchestra. We also have a breakfast and after school club. MUSIC TUITION Children from Year 2 Year 6 are offered the opportunity to play a musical instrument. Currently tuition is available in woodwind, violin, guitar and cello. Parents of children in Year 3 to Year 6 are asked to pay for the cost of this tuition. However, any parent who finds the cost of Music tuition prohibitive should make an appointment to see the Headteacher. BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT Good discipline is essential in a school community and so we aim, in partnership with parents, to establish and maintain good discipline throughout the school. To this end we engender a community wherein respect for the individual is paramount. All our rules are based on consideration for others and respect for living things and the general environment. As children mature we expect them to become self-disciplined, well mannered and courteous and to maintain the good reputation earned by previous generations of St. Augustines pupils. Pupils who fail to show care and consideration for others or who repeatedly break a school rule are likely to have sanctions. We have a positive approach to behaviour management and children are rewarded for good behaviour. However, parents will be notified if their children fail to show care and consideration for others and sanctions will be implemented such as missed playtime. In cases of serious or persistent misconduct the Headteacher may exclude a child from school in line with Diocesan and Borough policy. Copies of the school behaviour and anti-bullying policies are available at the school.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS To enhance our curriculum and support class work, we arrange educational visits throughout the year. To help fund these visits, we ask for voluntary contributions from parents. There is no obligation to contribute and no pupil in the class will be omitted. However, unless we receive a substantial number of contributions, it may mean that we have to cancel some visits if the balance cannot be found from limited school funds. PARENTAL PERMISSION At the beginning of each academic year, parents are sent a form to sign which gives permission for the children to go on local trips less than 1km in distance and on foot. A separate permission slip will be sent out for any other educational visit. It is vital that this slip is returned; a child will not be able to take part unless written permission is received. PASTORAL CARE As a Catholic school it is expected that the care and welfare of each child extends beyond the academic field. While overall responsibility for the welfare of the children rests with the Headteacher, each class teacher has particular responsibility for the children of their class. If at any time a parent is concerned about any aspect of their childs education or welfare they should in the first place contact their childs teacher for an appointment. If the situation continues the Deputy or Assistant Headteacher should be involved and ultimately the Headteacher. However, if the matter is urgent, confidential or you feel a matter has not been dealt with effectively please contact the Headteacher CHILD PROTECTION We believe that the welfare of your child is paramount. We would like to work closely with you to ensure your child is protected at all times. As in Redbridge schools, we are obliged to follow set procedures when we are concerned about a childs welfare. Whenever possible, we would want to discuss our concern with you first. However, there may be times when our concerns are such that we will be obliged to follow the procedures laid down by the Boroughs Area Child Protection Committee. In the unlikely event of this happening, you may be advised by us, that you will be contacted by a social worker or someone from another agency whose job it is to investigate such concerns. If we believe that by informing the parents of our concerns we may be putting the child at further risk then, following Child Protection guidelines, parents would not be informed of our referral. SCHOOL - HOME LIAISON Children are encouraged to read at home with the help of parents (PACT) and to carry out Mathematical activities in addition to research into the topics studied at school. A weekly newsletter keeps you up to date with a wide range of events or issues to do with our school. A termly curriculum newsletter will highlight the main topics your child will be covering during the term. Parent consultations take place each term. They give parents the opportunity to see their childs work and discuss their progress with the class teacher. We continuously record each childs progress and achievements to help us to plan the next stages in our teaching and the childs learning. Parents are welcome to view all such records concerning their child but we would ask for fifteen working days notice in order that reference to other children, which is obviously confidential, may be extracted. At the end of the Summer term, parents of children in Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 classes will be presented with a written report of their childs achievements. Various documents, including statutory orders relating to the National Curriculum are available for inspection by appointment. We have a Parent Support Advisor who is available to meet with parents during the week to discuss issues, help with matters connected to their childs education e.g. transition, translation, free school meals, completion of forms as well as advising parents on a variety of matters.

LINKS WITH CONTRIBUTORY PARISHES The four parish priests visit the school regularly for Masses, Penitential Services and special assemblies and provide a vital link with the various parish communities. Each parish also contributes generously to the Governors` Fund. PARENT STAFF ASSOCIATION There is a flourishing PSA, affiliated to the N.C.P.T.A. - National Confederation of Parent Staff Associations, which plays an important role in the life of St. Augustines School. The PSA arranges social and fund raising activities which include quizzes, treasure hunts and dances. All our parents are members of the PSA and are welcome at all events. The school reaps the benefit of the many hours of work invested by the committee and its voluntary helpers. Last year over 10,000 was donated to school funds to fund improvements to the school and to purchase a range of equipment. COMPLAINTS On the rare occasions when parents have a grievance they should discuss it with the Head teacher as soon as possible. Formal procedures have been established to deal with complaints, which cannot be resolved by this direct approach. A copy of these procedures is available for inspection at any reasonable time.

This scheme has as its foundational premise the belief that we are made in the image and likeness of God and, as a consequence gender and sexuality are Gods gift, reflect Gods beauty and share in the divine creativity. The emphasis from Nursery through to Year Six, is on secure relationships, built on respect, with ourselves, our family, our friends and God. This is important to inform our judgements about relationships as we get older. The scheme is firmly rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church and links with RE, PSHE and Science. SCHOOL MEALS Hot dinners are cooked on the premises and are currently priced at 2.00 per day. There is a choice of menu, including a vegetarian option ach day. ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINE IN SCHOOLS.

We will administer medicine which has been prescribed by a doctor, to avoid children missing too much time from school. However, we are not able to do this unless the following procedure has been followed: 1a. A form obtainable from the infant or junior offices has been completed which gives permission for us to administer the medicine, clearly stating the dosage and time. 1b. In cases of long term complaints such as asthma and diabetes, parents have met with the School Nurse and Health and Safety Officer to agree protocols. 2. The medicine should be brought to the school by the parent, not the child, and delivered personally to the office staff. 3. Medicines must be clearly labelled with the contents, owners name and dosage and be stored in a locked cupboard in the office. The child should visit the office at the correct time to receive the medication as prescribed. 4. Teachers and/or secretaries cannot accept responsibility for the timing of the administration of the medicine. 5. Under no circumstances should medicines be kept in cloakrooms or classrooms. This will eliminate the risk, however remote, of the wrong child receiving the medication. 6. The school can only administer medication which has been prescribed by a doctor and this includes Calpol and Piriton. Please note that in line with guidance, children who have been physically sick or suffered from diarrhoea must not return to school until 24 hours following the last episode. ILLNESS AT SCHOOL If your child is unwell or has an accident we will telephone you at home or at work. It is extremely important that the school has emergency contact numbers for your child. If we cannot contact you we will contact the person you have asked us to contact in the event of an emergency. If we are not able to contact anyone, we will, if necessary, arrange proper medical attention, which might mean taking your child to hospital by car or by ambulance.

OFSTED Office for Standards in Education Our last Ofsted Inspection was December 2008. New or prospective parents are encouraged to view the report via the Internet: www.ofsted.gov.uk or to ask at the school office for the shortened version. A copy of the Ofsted Action Plan is also available from the school office. Our RE Inspection took place in April 2009 and the report is available on request.

Under the terms of the Governments Education Regulation 1991 (Pupils Attendance Records) we have to publish information concerning childrens attendance at school. If you child is away from school we need to know the reason. Authorised absences are those absences, which fall un the following categories: 1. If your child is absent for one day or a few days please telephone the school before 10.00am on the first day of absence and send a note when he / she returns to school. 2. If your child is likely to be absent for a week or more, please telephone and let us know what is happening. Then follow it up as above. 3. If you child has an appointment at the hospital, dentist, doctor etc, please write or telephone beforehand. 4. St Augustines in line with Redbridge Policy operates a zero tolerance towards holidays taken during term time apart from the following agreed exceptional circumstances: Serious illness or death of a close relative. We feel that such a category would be very difficult to define and so any absence would be at the discretion of the Headteacher. Religious reasons subject to a maximum number of 3 days. Sudden loss of housing through eviction or domestic violence up to a maximum of 3 days. Out of school programmes such as music, arts or sport operating at a high standard of achievement and agreed by the L.A. The EWS will advise schools on individual circumstances. Weddings of close relatives when an explanation has been provided as to why this is not being held at a weekend or during holidays. A maximum of 3 days only will be authorised. (Only one such request will be considered whilst the child is at St Augustines). A family holiday which due to a parent / carer work commitment cannot be taken at any other time. Evidence has to be provided from employers (Only one such request will be considered per academic year and is not an automatic entitlement).

Please note that only one exceptional circumstance will be considered at a time. Exceptional circumstances cannot be joined together to extend absence.

Sanctions for an Unauthorised Leave of Absence without Permission A Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued for unauthorised leave of absence (holiday) taken without permission after the first day of absence. It will be issued by the EWS following discussions with the Head. This will incur a fine of 60.00 per child being imposed, if paid within 28 days of receipt of the notice, rising to 100.00 per child if paid after 28 days but within 42 days of receipt. If the penalty is not paid in full by the end of the 42 days, the Local Authority must either prosecute for the offence or withdraw the notice. This prosecution is for the offence of failing to secure attendance at school not for nonpayment of the fine. Prosecutions are brought under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996. There is no statutory right of appeal against the issuing of a Penalty Notice. Arrangements for payment will be detailed on the penalty notice. This will be reviewed on an annual basis. In cases where unauthorised leave of absence has been taken without permission, which exceeds 10 days or more, the school should advise the EWS in order that steps can be implemented with a view to removing the child from roll. (The EWS will have a checklist of requirements before a pupil can be removed from the school roll). A decision will be taken by the EWS whether to implement legal proceedings under the Education Act 1996, Section 444 and (1a). Lateness is also monitored and recorded by the school as a legal requirement. Parents or carers of children who are regularly late are likely to be contacted by the Headteacher, in the first instance, and then may receive a visit from the Educational Welfare Officer. It is detrimental to a childs education if they are not in school right from the beginning of the first session.
