COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: This class will build on the writing skills developed in EGL 101, specifically the ability to write analytical and persuasive essays and to utilize research materials correctly and effectively. Students will read different literary genres (poetry, drama, and narrative fiction). Selections from the literature will provide the basis for analytical and critical essays that explore ways in which writers use works of the imagination to explore human experience. A continual technological aspect, the blog, will be introduced as a method to further expand the concepts of lessons and pursue methods of evaluating, connecting and publishing student experiences with literature. REQUIRED TEXTS: X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia Ed. Backpack Literature Fourth Edition. New York: Pearson-Longman, 2012. Herman Melvilles, Bartleby and Benito Cereno COURSE RULES: 1. No assignment may be omitted. 2. Plagiarized work will receive a failing grade. Be advised that it is very obvious to English professors when something is not written in the student's style. 3. Absences or latenesss exceeding three (3) times will require a conference with the professor. Excessive absences/tardiness will directly affect your class participation grade. 4. Late work will be accepted only under special circumstances and only when the student has communicated the reason prior to the class when the assignment is due. A full grade deduction will occur for each day the assignment is not received on the day it is due. 5. There are no make-ups of tests except in the case of documented illness or hardship. Notification must be given prior to or on the date of the test. REQUIRED WORK: 1. Frequent assigned readings of stories, poems, and plays from the text. 2. Weekly Blog Posts: Students will write 10 short posts on the class blog. These posts will be 100-150 words and will be written in response to prompts or on topics provided by the instructor. Blog posts will be evaluated on a credit/no credit basis. Posts are expected to be completed by 5:00 PM on the due date,

respond to the prompt or topic, and meet standards of academic writing. Posts which do not meet these requirements will receive no credit. Class Discussion and participation. One in-class midterm and one in-class final.( short answer and essay) Two formal out of class essay assignments. Final blog/Online Portfolio assignment to be presented and completed by assigned due date.
