Mon dessin numro 1. Il tait comme a :

The Little Prince CHAPTER I Once, when I was six years old I saw a magnificent image in a book about the primeval forest called True Stories. It looked like a boa constrictor that was swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.

The book said: The boa constrictors swallow their pray whole, without swallowing. Then they cant move and they sleep for six months while they digest.

I then thought a lot about the adventures of the jungle, and in my time, I succeeded, with a colored pencil, in drawing my first drawing. My drawing number 1. It was like this:

The Little Prince

I showed my work of art to the grown-ups and I asked them if my drawing scared them. They responded to me Why would a hat scare anyone? My drawing was not representing a hat. It was representing a boa constrictor that was digesting an elephant. I then drew the interior of the boa constrictor, so the grown-ups could understand. They always need explanations. My drawing number 2 was like this:

The grown-ups advised me to put the drawings of boa constrictors,

The Little Prince open or closed, aside and to interest myself more with geography, history, calculations, and grammar. This is why, at the age of six, I abandoned a magnificent career of painting. I was discouraged by the unsuccessfulness of my drawing number 1 my drawing number 2. The grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and its tiring for children to always have to give them explanations. I then had to choose another profession and I learned to pilot planes. I have flown a little all over the world. And the geography, exactly, has helped me a lot. I can recognize, at first glance, China from Arizona. Its very useful, if one is lost during the night. I then had, during the course of my life, lots of contacts with lots of serious people. I have lived with grown-ups. I have seen them very close. That has not really improved my opinion. When I met one who seemed a bit lucid, I did the experiment of showing him my drawing number 1 that I always kept. I wanted to know if he really understood. But they always would respond: Its a hat. So, I wouldnt talk to him about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars.
6

Hein ! Dessine-moi un mouton

The Little Prince I put myself in his level. I talked of bridge, golf, politics, and ties. And the big person was very happy to have met a man so reasonable. CHAPTER II I have since then lived alone, without anyone to really talk to, until a breakdown in the Sahara desert six years ago. Something broke in my motor. And since I didnt have a mechanic with me, nor passengers, I prepared myself to try to fix it, alone, a difficult reparation. It was, for me, a question of life or death. I had just enough water to drink for eight days. The first night I slept on the sand, a thousand miles from all habituated land. I was more isolated than a shipwreck on a raft in the middle of the ocean. So you can imagine my surprise, when at sunrise, a funny little voice woke me up. She said: Please draw me a sheep! What! Draw me a sheep

The Little Prince I jumped to my feet as if I had been hit by lightening. I rubbed my eyes well. I looked hard. And I saw a little man, quite extraordinary, who was looking at me intensely. Here is the best portrait that, later, I was able to make of him. But my drawing, of course, is much less ravishing than the model.

This isnt my fault. I had been discouraged of my artist career by the adults, at the age of six, and I had never learned to draw, except for boas from the outside and boas from the inside. I looked at this apparition with round eyes in astonishment. Dont forget that I found myself a

The Little Prince thousand miles away from habituated land. But my little man didnt seem lost, and neither dying of fatigue, nor hunger, nor thirst, nor fear. He had nothing of the appearance of a lost child in the middle of the desert, a thousand miles away from all habituated land. When I finally was able to speak, I said to him: But what are you doing here? And he repeated then, very softly, like it was something very serious: Please draw me a sheep When the mystery is so impressive, one must not disobey. As crazy as it seemed to me, a thousand miles from all habituated places and in danger of death, I took from my pocket a piece of paper and a pen. But I remembered how I had only studied geography, history, calculus, and grammar and I said to the little man (with a bit of bad humor) that I didnt know how to draw. He responded to me: That doesnt matter. Draw me a sheep. Since I had never drawn a sheep I drew for him one of the only two drawings I was capable of. This one was of a boa from the outside. And I
12

Le Petit Prince stupfait dentendre le petit bonhomme me rpondre : Non ! Non ! Jai besoin dun mouton. Dessine-moi un mouton. Alors jai dessin.

Il regarda attentivement, puis : Non ! Celui-l est dj trs malade. Fais-en un autre. Je dessinai :

13

The Little Prince was stupefied to hear the little man respond to me: No! No! I dont want an elephant inside of a boa. A boa is very dangerous, and an elephant is very cumbersome. Where I live everything is very small. I need a sheep. Draw me a sheep. So I drew.

He looked at it attentively, then No! This one is already very sick. Make another. I drew:

14

15

The Little Prince My friend smiled gently, with indulgence, You see, this isnt a sheep. Its a ram. It has horns I redrew my drawing again:

But he refused this one like the others. This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live a long time. So, with lack of patience, as I was eager to start taking my motor apart, I tossed him this drawing.

16

17

The Little Prince And I called, That is its box. The sheep that you want is inside. But I was very surprised to see the face of my young judge light up. Thats exactly what I wanted! Do you think that this sheep will need a lot of grass? Why? Because where Im from its very small There will surely be enough. I gave you a very small sheep. He bent his head over the drawing, Not as small as that Look! He is sleeping And thats how I made the acquaintance of the little prince.
