b) Two straights meet at an intersection forming a deflection angle of 60. A simple horizontal curve of diameter 80m is to be fitted between them. If the chainage of the point of exit of the curve is 2 689.45m,calculate the following: i. ii. iii. iv. Length of tangent Length of the long chord Chainage of the point of commencement of curve [2] [1] [1]

Using offsets from long chord, calculate the offsets required to set out the curve at 3m intervals [6]

(Where necessary, assume pi = 3.141593)

Question 4

a) Briefly explain the relationship between cut, embankment and spoil heap? [3] b) You are given that the coordinated points (in the table on page 5), mark the boundary of a wooded area. c) A 90 m pipeline has a constant falling gradient of 1:25 for the first 60m and a rising gradient of 1:20 for the remaining 30m. Given that its formation level is 234.56m at chainage 0, calculate the formation levels, cut or fill at the chainages and reduced levels given in the table on the next page.

Question 5

a) A heaped mine dump and an open pit are situated side by side. The areas enclosed by both features are mapped by contours as given in the table below: Open Pit Contours (m) Area (m2) Contours (m) Dump Heap Area (m2) 1320 6000 1320 5500 1290 4000 1347 4500 1260 3200 1374 3500 1230 1350 1401 1432 1200 100 1428 986

i.

Compute the volumes of the pit and mine dump heap using prismoidal formulae? [4]

ii.

If the mine management decides to level out the area between the 2 features, by filling up the pit with materials from the dump heap, compute the volume of excess or deficit generated? (assume all excavated dump heap materials have a 1.01 bulking factor) [3]

iii.

If charges for transporting excess fill material into the area are fixed at N4000 plus N1.60 per m3 moved while that of moving excess material out of the area is N2 500 plus N 1.40 per m3, calculate the transportation costs? [3]

iv.

Briefly explain the three (3) main segments of the Global Positioning System and how they work together in determining a user position. [10]
