The e-mail sent to Grad Secretaries to solicit testimonials: Subject: The Impact of Student Awards Hi ., Currently in CFIS Development, we are working on some material to promote donations to student awards scholarships, bursaries, fellowships, prizes. And we would like to include some personal statements from students about the impact of receiving an award. We would like to have 1 or 2 from every program. Could you please ask some of your students or alumni to contact me if they are willing to share their experience with us. All we are looking for is a 50 word statement, their name, name of their degree/program, (expected) graduation year and the name of the award they received. They can say briefly what their research is about, and how the award affected them - the impact it had on their lives, personal or academic. We will edit for space and/or clarity. We would also like a photo to personalize their stories. These testimonials will be used by our Development Officers when they are meeting with potential donors to student awards, some of whom may be alumni. Thank you for any help you can give us! - karin Both documents can be found at O:\CFIS & Units\UNITS\_Unit 1-pg Fact Sheets (2010)\Student Awards ~ = waiting for more info

J'Nelle Young, PhD (2011) Cell and Developmental Biology

FOUR-YEAR FELLOWSHIP
Without funding, working two parttime jobs was the only option to continuing my studies in Cell and Developmental Biology. Jesse J Popov, PhD (2011) Interdisciplinary Oncology

FOUR YEAR FELLOWSHIP

I am writing to say how invaluable being a recipient of both the Ph.D tuition award and the Four Year Fellowship has been in terms of allowing me to dive headfirst into the various complicated and layered stages that make up a Ph.D program. It has been invaluable to receive funding so that my focus can be doing my best work and engaging fully with my studies.

FOUR YEAR FELLOWSHIP

As a mother returning to school from the workplace, I would not have been able to accept admission to graduate school without a substantial award that was guaranteed annually. So I feel lucky to have the scholarship, as it has provided me an opportunity to do a PhD as a "mature" student.
