Perception of Emotion in Self and Others: Advances in

Affect. Volume 5. By

This is a well printed and bound selection of eight papers ranging from What is Emotion through Image and Emotion to Sexual Orientation and Self Perception. This book brings into the discussion of Emotion the physiological factors such as the Sympathetic Nervous System and Endocrinology. In the first paper Leventhal quotes Hakmouns 1966 Report on Spinal Injuries that there was retardation in emotional feelings only for anger, fear and sexuality, and that sadness and sentimentality were stronger. My experience with nursing people handicapped by Disseminated Sclerosis and Spinal Inuries did not bear this statement out. The argument in the first paper is basically: Is there a separate emotion processing system or, as I am inclined to believe, is emotion a by-product of un-used psychic energy much akin to a safety valve or heat from the exhaust system of a car? Epstein asks How does one investigate love in the laboratory. I would ask Does love

is it what we talk about and sex is what we do. This is a most interesting and argumentative book. That is, of course, if one thinks for oneself and does not follow the herd. I found the book most interesting, even though I disagreed with a lot of its contents. A very useful book, and one I will be proud to have in my bookcase. Definitely a book for the shepherds and not their flock. By the way, I suggest Mr. Epstein sees Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett in Saturn III. They appear not only as scientific colleagues in the film, but lovers in the laboratory. Sidney A. Cundale, SRN.
