DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING ASSIGNMENT-I REHABILITATION OF STRUCTURES

1 With examples explain where we are going wrong at various stages (planning, construction and maintenance) and suggest what could have been done to avoid such failures. Bring out some examples of congenital defects in concrete construction (that which were not discussed in the class). As a construction engineer how you could have avoided these. Explain the three Holistic models suggested for a clear understanding of the deterioration of concrete. Also give the chart for the distress diagnostics Identify any three defects in construction you notice in your day to day life let it be due to faulty materials, improper planning or design, maintenance or subsequent deterioration because of age and suggest the possible reasons for deterioration. Explain the subtle difference between Repair, Rehabilitation, Refurbishment, Retrofitting, Remodeling, Renovation, and Restoration. With neat sketches explain the electro-chemical causes for corrosion of concrete. Give the relevant chemical equations involved in the corrosion process of concrete. Explain clearly the hydration process in cement explaining clearly the role of the hydrated cement paste in the deterioration of concrete structures. Give all the relevant equations. Highlight the major reasons for failure of structures as understood from the past failure of structures due to seismic action Identify some of the major causes for distress of concrete structures. Highlight the carbonation, sulphate attack, chloride attack, acid attack and Alkali Aggregate Reaction. Discuss the durability aspects of concrete structures as given in the IS 456-2000. Explain with neat sketches the rebound hammer and the ultrasonic pulse velocity test methods of Non-Destructive testing, suggesting the acceptable range of values. Explain with neat sketches the non-destructive test methods: (a) Cover meter test (b) Resistivity meter test carbonation test (d) Rapid Chloride test (e)Permeability and Sorptivity (f) Half Cell Potential Survey and (g) Vibration based test. Explain briefly about the core Sampling and the Partially destructive testing method
