Expectations - at the end of this Module:

Music Room All students will: Perform a simple hook on the keyboard Compose simple melodic hook on keyboard based on 1 of the 2 sets of note patterns Rehearse and perform a rhythm composition Contribute to group composition through rhythmic or melodic work Offer ideas on other pupils work Most students will: Perform both hooks on the keyboard Compose more complex melodic hook on keyboard based on 1 of the 2 sets of note patterns Take a supporting role when rehearsing and performing a rhythm composition Contribute to group composition through rhythmic or melodic work accurately and confidently Provide specific feedback on their own and other pupils work Some students will: Perform both hooks on the keyboard, offering new ideas such as changed of sound and musical elements. Confidently compose rhythmically complex melodic hook on keyboard based on 1 of the 2 sets of note patterns Take a leading role when rehearsing and performing a rhythm composition Direct the group and offer ideas, resulting in a accurately rhythmic and melodic composition Provide appropriate comments on their own and other pupils work using correct musical vocabulary

Music Tech All students will: Be able to navigate a website and find information on Bhangra Identify the basic elements of Bhangra music Create a simple powerpoint presentation Most students will: Be able to read and select appropriate information from a Bhangra website Identify and describe the basic elements of Bhangra music Create an aesthetically pleasing powerpoint presentation Some students will: Be able to read, navigate and select relevant and interesting information from a Bhangra website Identify, describe and explain the elements of Bhangra music Create an aesthetically pleasing powerpoint presentation with links to music and videos

Format
Session 1 (Music Room) Introduction and Listening Play pupils piece of Bhangra music and ask questions on their thoughts e.g. what part of the world does this music come from? Why do you say this? What instruments can you hear? Can anyone pick out key features? Brief introduction to Bhangra

Hooks

Pupils to listen to piece of Bhangra music and identify the hook (covering a small pitch range and including repeated notes. A longer melody, including chromatic notes for extended task pupils) Demonstrate a hook which is hear in the examples and teach it to pupils Pupils to rehearse and perform back the hook they have learnt Pupils to compose their own hook using either a pentatonic scale GACDE or the notes ABCD, with chromatic additional notes Some pupils to perform back to class and whole class appraisal to take place Introduce drone pupils to pair up and one student to hold drone (2 notes out of the scale) and other student to play hook over the top. Reverse the roles.

Pupils to write this down in letter form so they do not forget for next session

Bhangra percussion techniques

Introduce 8 beat rhythm cycles Teacher to demonstrate on drum an 8 beat rhythm cycle and pupils to perform this back in a whole class activity Pupils to work individually on an 8 beat rhythm cycle notate in grid on sheet provided

Session 2 (Music Room) Recap information learnt in previous session

Group composition Pupils to work in groups of 4 to combine their previous sessions work to create a group composition Pupils to select a hook, drone and 2 rhythm cycles that were composed in previous session or work together to compose something new Pupils to spend time rehearsing their composition to be performed at the end of the session

Performance and Appraisal Each group to perform back their composition to the rest of the class Other pupils in group to offer feedback on what worked well? How did they work together as a group? Was it all in time? What part was your favourite? How could it be improved to create a better performance next time? Provide sheet for pupils to write down thoughts (2 good points, 1 improvement per group)

Session 3 (Music Tech) Bhangra Listening Test Pupils to listen to the extract of music and answer the questions on sheet individually (General features, picking out the rhythm from 3 options, names of drums etc)

Individual Research Project Introduce Individual research task Pupils are to spend next 2 sessions researching into Bhangra music and its origins Share websites with pupils that they may want to look at Share key points each presentation must include as a basic outline

Session 4 (Music Tech) Bhangra Listening Test

Pupils to listen to the extract of music and answer the questions on sheet individually

(Compare and contrast extract? Listing similarities and differences?) Individual Research Project Recap what is expected of research project recapping on the basic outline for all to include, sharing websites Final check check spelling, add pictures, appropriate colours, add music as a background? Insert any movie clips?

Peer assessment of research projects Pupils to peer assess each others powerpoint in the pod (6 pupils) Move round the pod, sitting at the computer and watch other students presentations Pupils to fill in peer assessment sheet marking out of 5 on each of the aspects (key features, artists, origins, appearance of powerpoint etc) and giving a final overall comment (each pupils to have 3/4 minutes on each presentation) Group discussion of what pupils thought made a good presentation to follow peer assessment task Teacher to assess individual projects throughout the lesson
