Introduction Stroke or Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), is a sudden attack in the brain caused by the inability of oxygen to pass through

the veins due to a blood clot of a burst blood vessel. In the absence of blood supply, the brain cells die and, depending on which brain area is affected, will manifest in the in reduced brain function like talking or walking. There are two types of stroke the ischemic and the hemorrhagic stroke Ischemic Stroke is a condition where blood clots causing obstruction in the vessels resulting to negative oxygen flow to the brain. In the Philippines, it is the most common with 70% of cases. Hemorrhagic stroke accounts for 30% of cases in the country. It is when the blood vessel bursts. Common causes include uncontrolled hypertension where one detects high blood pressure but is hesitant to go to the doctor to consult; or where a hypertensive patient isnt taking medicine, or medicine is taken in inadequate amounts. Both types are fatal. Its said that if one experiences a stroke or brain attack, you are in what is known as a 30-30-30 situation. Meaning, 30% die, 30% lucky and can go to back to normal, and 30% left with disability, Dr. Maria Cristina San Jose, a neurologist, and 2nd Vice President of the Stroke Society of the Philippines. There are two types of risk factors for stroke. One is non-modifiable risk factors, meaning a patient cannot do anything about it. These are, as follows: Age Before, stroke was limited to the 60 to 70 age groups. Now, cases of stroke occur in patients as young as 30 to 40 years old because of the change in lifestyle Gender most common in men than women Race stroke usually occur in blacks, asians, then white (in order) Heredity Experts say modifiable risk factors cited below have a higher chance from stroke only if they change their lifestyles. Hypertensives Diabetics Smokers Alcoholics Obese People who lack exercise

In the case of our patient NN, his pre diagnosis is CVD Hemorrhagic but later changed to ischemic base from the echocardiogram result. Ovious manifestations of slurd speech and right sided weakness. His first time encountered attack was due to a severe hypertension with a BP of 240/150mmhg.

Scope and limitation: The study involves a field-work, interviews on the townspeople and observations of our patients activities and lifestyle that may contribute to their existing problem. The study aims to lower the number of people developing persistent hypertension which can lead to heart attacks, heart failures, chronic renal failure and stroke. Even moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure leads to shortened life expectancy. Because of the increasing number of people having hypertension, this study will help them lower their chances of having more complications of hypertension and lower the chance of prehypertensive people on acquiring hypertension.
