    Experiment 5 aims to study differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation and demodulation and measure its bit error rate (BER). DPSK conveys data by changing the phase of the carrier wave based on previous symbols, avoiding issues caused by unknown phase shifts in the channel. Theory: Differentialphaseshiftkeying(DPSK)isacommonformofphase modulationthatconveysdatabychangingthephaseofthecarrierwave.As mentionedforBPSKandQPSKthereisanambiguityofphaseifthe constellationisrotatedbysomeeffectinthecommunicationschannelthrough whichthesignalpasses.Thisproblemcanbeovercomebyusingthedata tochangeratherthansetthephase. IndifferentiallyencodedBPSKabinary'1'maybetransmittedbyadding180 tothecurrentphaseandabinary'0'byadding0tothecurrentphase. AnothervariantofDPSKisSymmetricDifferentialPhaseShiftkeying,SDPSK, whereencodingwouldbe+90fora'1'and90fora'0'. Analysisshowsthatdifferentialencodingapproximatelydoublestheerrorrate comparedtoordinaryOTHERPSKbutthismaybeovercomebyonlyasmall increaseinEb/N0.Furthermore,thisanalysis(andthegraphicalresultsbelow) arebasedonasysteminwhichtheonlycorruptionisadditivewhiteGaussian noise.However,therewillalsobeaphysicalchannelbetweenthetransmitter andreceiverinthecommunicationsystem.Thischannelwill,ingeneral, introduceanunknownphaseshifttothePSKsignal;inthesecasesthe differentialschemescanyieldabettererrorratethantheordinaryschemes whichrelyonprecisephaseinformation. Forasignalthathasbeendifferentiallyencoded,thereisanobvious alternativemethodofdemodulation.Insteadofdemodulatingasusualand ignoringcarrierphaseambiguity,thephasebetweentwosuccessivereceived symbolsiscomparedandusedtodeterminewhatthedatamusthavebeen. Whendifferentialencodingisusedinthismanner,theschemeisknownas differentialphaseshiftkeying(DPSK).Notethatthisissubtlydifferenttojust differentiallyencodedPSKsince,uponreception,thereceivedsymbols

    arenotdecodedonebyonetoconstellationpointsbutareinsteadcompared directlytooneanother. Blockdiagramsofthearrangementfollow.
