OVERHEAD SECTIONAL DOOR

I. INTRODUCTION

Overhead doors are closures where the door leaf panels are sandwiched into a rail system fitted in the available space above your head. The overhead door is currently the most popular industrial door on the market. The door is known by various names such as sectional door, section door or garage door, for example. There are many manufacturers producing this type of door on the market. Some of the better-known companies include Hrmann, Crawford, Novoferm, Alpha, Condor and Teckentrup. Sectional doors are usually constructed of six to eight panels and slide up and overhead. Sectional doors occupy exactly the same amount of internal garage space as a monolithic door. Sectional doors have two distinct advantages over single panel monolithic doors: - Sectional doors do not require any space outside the garage to open. A vehicle may park very close to the garage before opening the door. - Each panel of a sectional door has its own connection to the door track. This increases reliability and robustness compared to monolithic doors which have only a couple of track connections for the whole panel.

B.3. Design Computations
1. Thickness of the Track Not all of the parts of the tracks system are available at the market, so fabrication of these parts is needed. Most of the parts are made up of galvanized steel, specifically A653 Galvanized Steel. Galvanized steel is simply hot rolled steel to which a zinc coating has been applied for protection against corrosion. It has an ultimate tensile strength of 58,000 - 79,800 psi and yield strength of 36,300 psi (250.2788 MPa). Maximum load of the tracks occurs when the door is fully opened because most of the weight of the door is being supported by the tracks. If you consider one part of the track, it will carry half of the weight of the door.

Consider Section A-B :

( ) (reaction at B)

T + R1 = W T = 228.85 N (min load of the steel cable)

Mx = -725,706.8848 + x 644.6512247 x 2253.040541 = 505.787064 Nmm Therefore, the maximum moment is equal to 725,706.8848 Nmm

2. Size of the Expansion Bolt Expansion Bolts are used to fasten or mount the track assembly to the wall and ceiling. The bolts are made of corrosion-resistant steel or CRS. Specifically, the Core bolt and bushings are made up of CRES 17-4PH Condition H-900 with a tensile strength of 1380 Mpa and yield strength of 760 MPa. a. used for mounting to the ceiling

If the expansion bolt is use for mounting to the ceiling, it will experience tensile stress on its core bolt. Using 3 expansion bolts,

Load = R2 = 1299.162162 N, the maximum load of the horizontal bracket will carry.

b. used as mounting to the wall If the expansion bolt is use for mounting to the wall, it will experience tensile stress and shearing stress on its core bolt. Using 4 expansion bolts,

W1 = 343.35 N, acting at 141.3333333 mm from A W2 = 1888mm (0.286125 N/mm) = 540.204 N, acting at 1368 mm from A

Resulting Load, W1-2 = W1 + W2 = 343.35 + 540.204 = 883.554N x W1-2 = 141.3333333W1 + 1368W2 540.204x = 141.3333333(343.35) + 141.3333333(883.554) x = 891.3320582 mm from A = F4 = F2 = F2 = F1 F1 F1

Solving for the bolt diameter: Considering the Tensile Stress:

2. Door Drive Motor The door drive must overcome the maximum load of the door which happens when the door starts to open. a. Computing Computation of the Maximum Load Load = F = 280 kg x 9.81 m/s2 = 2746.8 N Torque, T = Fr = 2746.8 N x 49 mm = 134.5442 Nm Therefore, a door drive motor with an output torque of at least 134.5442 is necessary to drive the door.

Where F = vertical pull of the Drive motor through the steel wire rope W = weight of the door =mg = 280 kg x 9.81 m/s2 = 2746.8 N a = acceleration of the door from rest

Computing for a:

V = Vo+ at Solving for V: V= where: V r t = velocity of the door, m/min = radius of the drum, m = angular velocity of the drum rad/min = time, table 4 = 0.049 m

From Table 3, if the motor drive is A 140/20 (140 Nm, 20 rpm) Table 3 V = 0.049 mm x 20 x = 0.10262536 m/sec Page | 28

OVERHEAD SECTIONAL DOOR

So, a= a F = 2746.8 N + 0.041050144 m/s2 F= 2758.305769 N, maximum load of the motor = 0.041050144 m/s2

b. Selecting the Door Drive Motor Check if the motor can carry the load:

Torque, T = F x r T =2758.305769N x 0.049m = 135.1569827 Nm The Computed torque is less than the rated output torque of the motor. Therefore, the door drive motor can carry the load. From Becker,

Page | 29

3. Steel Wire Rope

The steel wire rope will experience bending over drums. They are primarily stressed by bending and secondly by tension. The maximum load of the steel cable happens when the door starts to open. a. Computation of the Working Load Properties of the steel wire rope

DIN 3060 steel wire rope galvanized Nominal Tensile Strength

= 1770 N/mm2

To determine the working load of a wire rope, the nominal strength must be reduced by a design factor (formerly called a safety factor). The design factor will vary depending upon the type of machine and installation, and the work performed.

= = 1.379152885 KN Use = 5 (From the table 6)

KN

Page | 30

OVERHEAD SECTIONAL DOOR

b. Selecting the Steel Wire Cable Fiber core applies to any natural or synthetic brous material that is woven into a rope of its own. Fiber cores are generally made of polypropylene or a hard ber such as manila (abaca) or sisal. Fiber cores are adequate for most types of service. Not only do they provide the necessary foundation, but they also add to the pliability of a wire rope. There are some installations, however, where conditions are such that a ber core is inadequate; in these cases a wire strand or independent wire rope core is used. For service where high operating pressures are encountered, where resistance to heat, additional strength, or minimum stretch is a prerequisite, either a strand core or an independent wire rope core is used. Therefore, from Table5, use 4 mm nominal diameter steel cable with fiber core.

4. Shafts and Keys a. Computation of the Maximum Moment of the Shaft The shaft will be designed to match the door weight, and manufactured using 25.4 mm diameter solid steel bar. The shaft will be supported at both ends, with end plates fitted with bearings. Maximum Load:

F= 4750
(

N
) ( )

2x

F1 = F2 = M= M = 172,239.1106 Nmm

Max Moment = 172,239.1106 Nmm

Page | 31

OVERHEAD SECTIONAL DOOR

b. Checking if the Shaft can Carry the Load

From ASME Code B17C -1927, Section 21, p.171 If there is a key way at the section for which the stress calculations are made, the working stress calculation is to be reduced to 75% of the value for the solid circular shaft. By Maximum shear stress theory, and a solid shaft diameter of 25.4 mm, galvanized solid steel shaft with Keyway ( ). M = 172,239.1106 Nmm T = 135,156.9827 Nmm

( Fs = 1.379322431

Therefore, the shaft with diameter of 25.4 can carry the load.

c. Checking if the Key can Carry the Load The dimension of the key will be based on the keyway of the door drive and drum.

The keys are made up of galvanized steel with (

).
