LG Electronics has officially launched its 55-inch OLED TV. LG debuted its new line of NFC enabled Smart TVs. Sony has announced that it will stop producing its PS 2 consoles in Japan.

Royal Philips Electronics announced that it has sold business assets covering multimedia devices to Funai Electric. Panasonic said it lost about $6.77 billion in the nine months.
Panasonic is showing off a prototype UHDTV. Panasonic announced the development of a new tablet computer that features a 20-inch IPS Alpha LCD panel.

Panasonic is shutting down its only dedicated plasma TV manufacturing.


Panasonic has joined LG's Smart TV Alliance. Toshiba is showing off at CES a prototype of an OLED smart watch. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said that it has established its first subsidiary in Turkey. Vizio, one of the top television makers in the U.S., entered the PC market.

Vizio showed off an impressive 10-inch tablet. Westinghouse Digital announced a new line of LED TVs for the coming year devices that are Roku Ready for streaming-happy consumers. Flingo will be integrated into Haier Smart TVs. Haier announced its 2013 line of televisions. TCL has officially reported that its fullyear LCD TV sales in 2012 reached 15.52 million units The LCD TV forecast for 2012 was reduced slightly to 205 million, slightly lower than in 2011.

Apple is planning the release of two iPhones in 2013. Apples most recent earnings report shows that the company has a whopping $137 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Apple sold a record 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter.
Apple has partnered with chip manufacturer Broadcom to create 802.11ac chips. Apple is now reportedly considering a buyout of social navigation startup Waze. Mac mini could be the first Mac to be produced in the US. Apple Inc has cut orders for LCD screens and other parts for the iPhone 5 this quarter. Apple is planning to unveil new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models in June 2013. Apple Inc has started testing a new iPhone and the next version of its iOS software. Apple has added Watchever as a new streaming video option. Recent shipping delays for the 27-inch iMac can be blamed on production problems at LG Display.

LCD TV sales in China reached 39.27 million units in 2012, up 5.9% on year, and are expected to climb another 4% on year in 2013.
Market observers said they expect Ultra HD TVs to have low sales in 2013 and are expected to make up 4% of the global TV market share in 2014 followed by 10% in 2015. The total digital living room market is expected to cross $200 billion by 2018.

ICT Samsung is expected to widen its lead over Apple Inc in global smartphone sales. Samsung said that global sales of its Galaxy S smartphones surpassed 100 million units. Samsung has canceled plans to release a Windows RT device in the U.S. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will be unveiled. Samsung will announce a 5.8-inch screen phone for the European market.

Apple Inc stepped up audits of working conditions.


Sony plans to emulate elite Android manufacturers. Toshiba has launched a MIPI-DSI. Lenovo will divide itself into different business groups.

Samsung is expected to introduce a 7in Galaxy Tab. Samsung has been rebuffed by Apple in an attempt to see the source code for iOS 6.
Samsung indicated that it plans to bring smartphones with its Tizen operating system to market by the end of the year. Apple's shares dipped below $500.

Amazon.com Inc said it acquired text-to-speech technology company Ivona Software. IBM said its quarterly net income rose 10 percent to $6.1 billion.
Asustek is aiming for the TV market with the introduction of an Internet streaming box. Acer plans to include retinal-class displays in several laptop models. Pace announced an ultra-fast, high performance IP client set-top box with MoCA 2.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity, developed in partnership with Broadcom. } 3

Cisco and NXP announced that they have each made an investment in Cohda Wireless to advance intelligent transportation systems or ITS and carto-X communications. Cisco unveiled synchronized multiscreen video services. Cisco Linksys announced the expansion of itsLinksys Smart Wi-Fi portfolio.

Trimble has announced that it has acquired privately-held ALK Technologies Inc.

Shares of Foxconn fell more than 4 percent.


Foxconn will establish factories in the Indonesia in 2013. Foxconn is internally working on new regulations to allow its purchasing processes to be controlled. Foxconn is being investigated by authorities over allegations that some of its employees accepted bribes from suppliers

Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately held Intucell. Cisco commissioned Intel to mass produce specialized chips. Parallels announced last week that networking giant Cisco had acquired an equity stake in the company, Belkin announced it would buy the Linksys brand from networking giant Cisco Cisco is working on a platform for the Internet of Things (IoT). Ericsson said it would buy the telecom and media unit of French technology consultant Devoteam. Ericsson reported a net loss of 6.3 billion kronor (990 million dollars) in the fourth quarter.
Nokia Siemens has decided to merge its Middle East and Africa (MEA) business.

Foxconn is poised to manufacture TV-maker VIZIO's first smartphones in China this year.
Wistron is unlikely to buy Sharp's TV assembly plant in Malaysia. The long courtship between the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Wireless Gigabit Alliance is set to end in marriage. Global smartphone shipments will jump 27% to 875 million this year.

Smartphone shipments rose 36 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter.


Shipments of phablets in 2013 are forecast by the firm to reach 60.4 million units, up 136% from 25.6 million in 2012.

Garmin unveiled their K2 platform, the companys next-generation automotive infotainment solution. Eastman Kodak Co's proposed $525 million sale of its digital imaging patents to Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corp got a bankruptcy judge's approval on Friday. Eastman Kodak Company announced it has extended its relationship with Carrefour.

Global tablet shipments will overtake notebook shipments in 2013, growing by 38.3% on 2012 levels to hit 210 million units.
China-based telecom providers are reportedly planning to release a number of handsets that have tablet features ranging from 4.5- to 6-inch in size during 2013. The total number of in-use Internetconnected mobile devices will overtake desktop computers some time this year. Home area networks will grow from $127 million in 2012 to $1.1 billion in 2020. M2M market is expected to grow from US$21.52 billion in 2011 to $85.96 billion in 2017.

Global WLAN Equipment market to grow at a CAGR of 17.81 percent over the period 2012-2016.
China has launched commercial and public services across the Asia-Pacific region on its domestic satellite navigation network. LCD monitor vendors are expected to continue releasing more value-added large-size monitors in 2013.

Innolux Corporation has reported that its December revenues reached US$1.52 billion. Innolux Corporation's LCD TV panel shipments in 2013 are expected to drop by 7-9% on year to 43.7 million units. Innolux Corp. (3481), the largest liquidcrystal display maker on the island, dropped 4.2 percent.

Taiwan-based manufacturers will ship 6.508 million digital cameras in total in the first quarter of 2013. Frost & Sullivan European Home Automation Market, finds that the market earned revenues of 223 million in 2012 and estimates this to reach 348.2 million in 2017.

Innolux is set to ship approximately two million Ultra HD TV panels in the first quarter of 2013. Seiko Epson has announced it has begun volume production of its latest Ultimicron panel.
BOE recently signed an investment agreement with the Chongqing Municipal Government to jointly invest US$5.26 billion in constructing a new 8.5G line. Corning plans to introduce two new products at CES 2013: Gorilla Glass 3. Dongxu estimates that China's display industry will account for more than 20% of global glass demand by 2015, up from about 10% in 2012.

Panel Industry

Samsung Display announced that it has exceeded 300 million panels in cumulative OLED. LG Display reported a $299 million profit for the fourth quarter.
Sharp is reportedly witnessing a shortage of its in-house produced 5inch Full HD handset panels. Depreciation of the Japanese yen will continue to help Japan-based panel makers stay competitive in exports. Sharp Corp has nearly halted production of 9.7-inch screens for Apple Inc's iPad.

Sharp has decreased production of LCD screens used in Apple's 9.7in iPad.
AUO will reportedly drop its monthly production of 32-inch TV panels from 800,000 units to 600,000. AU Optronics (AUO) has plans to mass produce small-size AMOLED panels. Amazon has reportedly asked Taiwanbased panel maker AU Optronics (AUO) to enter its supply chain to provide panels. AU Optronics (AUO) has announced that its OLED panel jointly developed with Sony is used in Sony's prototype 4K OLED TV.

A research team of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has developed a way to make paper-like flexible display devices closer with remarkably low cost. Global display applications market is expected to reach $164.24 billion by 2017, at an estimated CAGR of 3.1% from 2012 to 2017. Large-size TFT LCD panel shipments from Taiwan makers were down 5.9% on quarter in the fourth quarter of 2012 at 67.19 million units largely. The global penetration rate of touch screen technology used in LCD monitors is expected to increase to 8-10% in 2013.
Open cell TV panels sized 32-inch have recently seen a 1% or US$2 decline.

IT panel prices are expected to drop US$0.50-1.50 while TV panels are expected to see one of the biggest drops at US$1-40.
China has punished six companies and ordered them to pay a total of $56 million in fines. The Taiwan-based makers are expected to continue bumping up production of the 39-inch panels. In 2011, the OLED output value worldwide approximated USD3.3 billion, with year-on-year growth above 200%. The figure is expected to reach USD6.7 billion in 2012, rising by 102% from a year earlier. Taiwan-based panel makers' small- to medium-size TFT LCD shipments in the fourth quarter 2012 amounted to approximately 368 million units. Shipments of these automotive LCDs are projected to reach 116.8 million units by 2016.

Broadcom has taken licenses for both the ARMv7 and ARMv8 instruction set architectures. Broadcom announced that its HomePlug AV (HPAV) Powerline Communications (PLC) solution has been selected by NETGEAR Broadcom announced LG Electronics has chosen Broadcom's 5G WiFi technology. Broadcom announced its optimized, entry level ADSL gateway solution. Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) has announced a GPON Home Gateway Unit (HGU) system-on-a-chip (SoC). TI announced the full availability of a new ZigBee BoosterPack. Qualcomm Atheros is rolling out StreamBoost. Hitachi has announced that it has come up with a solution that stores data on slivers of quartz glass.

OLED lighting panels will reach a market size of nearly $2.8M in 2012 and will peak to nearly $1.7B by 2020.

Toshiba announced that a leading German luxury car manufacturer is now shipping its vehicles standard with HDD.
Sigma Designs announced that it will demonstrate a 4K x 2K digital TV platform on a 55" inch screen. Marvell and TCL announced that TCL is the first company to offer both a Smart TV and set-top box with Google TV. NXP unveiled an industry standard Near Field Communication (NFC) controller. NXP Semiconductors is planning to cut 700 to 900 jobs. Car-to-X communications is about to get ready for market entry. NXP announced the availability of the JN516x family of wireless microcontrollers. STMicroelectronics and Quantenna Communications revealed today a Wi-Fi set-top box reference design platform. STMicroelectronics has announced that its "Liege" family of cost-effective STB solutions.

Semiconductor Industry Intel is jumping from microprocessors to cable TV and set top boxes. Intel Corporation announced a TV experience that will enable customers to view live and on-demand television content on Intel-based devices. Intel Corp. has announced an Atom processor platform geared for low-end smartphones. Intel Corp's decision to spend $13 billion in 2013 to develop and build future manufacturing technology. Samsung's flagship Exynos 5 is a dualcore mobile chip that powers the company's ARM-based Google Chromebook. Pace and Broadcom announced the development of a Media Server Gateway. Broadcom announced that Comcast has chosen its connected home set-top box (STB) technology.

Freescale has achieved Golden Unit certification by the ZigBee Alliance. Atmel and Wasion signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop smart electricity meters and data concentrators.

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE) has officially approved the new 802.11ad.

Atmel announced the company has signed an agreement with Exegin Technologies Limited.
Inside Secure announced that Koreabased Telechips is integrating a host of INSIDE Secure security solutions. Nvidia unveiled its quad-core Tegra 4mobile processor. Bosch said it has integrated into a 32bit microcontroller a three-axis accelerometer. SMK and CSR announced that the companies will demonstrate new Bluetooth Smart-enabled advanced remote controls. MediaTek has announced that it has withdrawn a plan to issue new shares for the planned merger with MStar Semiconductor.

Shipments of ARM processor chips are likely to grow from 68% of all processor shipments in 2012. Markets for solid state thin-film batteries at $65.9 million in 2012 are anticipated to reach $5.95 billion by 2019. MEMS microphones reached about 2.06 billion units last year.

Software Industry Microsoft's Windows sales dropped 11% on a year over year.

Microsoft is reportedly in discussions to help finance a buyout of Dell Inc.


Microsoft has beat both Apple and Google in acquiring a startup named R2 Studios which primarily works in home automation and entertainment. Microsoft Corp. and BMW have signed a patent licensing agreement. Microsoft has published a working prototype of CU-RTC-Web.

MediaTek Inc., announced the availability of its MT3332/MT3333, the world's first 5-in-1 multi-GNSS.
Smart TV app publisher Flingo has announced that Samba, its new interactive TV platform, will be integrated into MStar Semiconductor.

Microsoft will close down its research center in South Korea.


Google announced that it has some new Google TV partners and that new devices and more updates. Facebook's Open Compute Project is being expanded to incorporate ARM processors. Facebook reportedly plans to outsource new storage product orders. QNX Software Systems has announced an automotive-grade middleware solution.

ALi announced that ALi's DVB-T2 solutions for the Russian market are ready for mass production. ILITEK will start shipping LCD driver ICs for two to three 40-inch and larger panel applications in 2013.
GreenPeak Technologies's new GP410 chip features ZigBee PRO Green Power for low cost energy harvesting and ultra-long battery life ZigBee applications for the Smart Home. Global semiconductor revenues worldwide experienced less than one per cent growth in 2012 amounting to $304 billion. Harbor predicts 802.11 enabled technology will grow from 1.4 billion shipments in 2012 to over 3.6 billion shipments by 2016.

Peugeot Citroen and Robert Bosch said they are teaming up to develop a hybrid powertrain system. Toyota announces that starting it will sell an electricity management system. Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW Group are working together on next-generation batteries. By 2016, more than 55 million people worldwide will have Internet access built into their vehicles. Home Theather Samsung coolly disclosed details on the highlights of its home theater line-up for 2013. The company is laying claim to introducing the worlds first sound bar system to be equipped with a vacuum tube, a new twist on Bluetooth for TV audio reproduction, gyros that improve sound quality, and an all-inone home theater system sporting an amplifier made with Gallium Nitride.

South Korean electronics giant Samsung plans to invest $1.7 billion in expanding and fitting out its operations in Kunshan, a fastgrowing manufacturing hub west of Shanghai, the Xinhua news agency said.

LED Backlit transformation

As Samsung Electronics has announced plans to halt production of traditional CCFL-backlit LCD TVs and focus on LED-backlit models, market observers believe the penetration rate of LED-backlit LCD TVs will increase to 90% in 2013. Furthermore, direct-lit LED TVs are likely to account for 50% of total LED market share, according to industry sources.

Investment LG Group, South Korea's fourth biggest business conglomerate, plans to raise its investment to a record 20 trillion won (11.69 billion pounds) this year, it said on Sunday, in a bid to take on rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Youm Flexible Display Samsung debuted a new flexible display it is calling Youm during the closing keynote at CES 2013. It first introduced the technology in April on its Korean site, but this is the first time Youm has been introduced in the U.S. Youm is quite impressive, and offers many options on ways to present information. This is not the first time flexible displays have been introduced, however. The idea has been around for a while, and each version seems to offer something different.

LGs stock performance OLED TV LG announced that it would launch the long-awaited OLED TV into the U.S. market this March, for a suggested retail price of $12,000 LG Electronics has officially launched its 55-inch OLED TV priced at around US$10,300. The company is currently taking orders for the TV in South Korea and has plans to announce launch dates in other markets throughout January 2013.

Interacvite appliances Samsung added a trio of interactive appliances to its 2013 lineup, such as the T9000 refrigerator with an LCD screen that lets you share lists on Evernote, check the weather, and program schedules in Google Calendar.

84 4K 3D LG has shown its 84-inch 4K 3D 84LM960 television in Las Vegas on the eve of CES 2013. This is LG's first 84inch Ultra HD TV, and based on these glimpses of it from the floor, it certainly looks like the company got it right on the first try.

Sony has stopped manufacturing its MiniDisc stereo systems, more than 20 years after the format first launched.

Online TV Services Sony is set to unveil its own multichannel TV service at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, in a bid to compete with Microsoft and Samsung in the streaming video business. Sources have told Variety that Sony is working on its own online TV service that we might see go live later this year. This comes after news that Intel will be launching a set-top box that is part DVR, part content delivery system. Not a lot of information is available, but what has been revealed is a plan to likely undercut traditional cable and satellite providers while giving consumers a broadbanddelivered television experience.

Taiwan-based panel makers' shipments of small- to medium-size TFT LCD panels are expected to reach 327 million units in the first quarter 2013, down 11.1% on quarter but up 5.8% on year, according to Digitimes Research.

Prices for large-size panels including LCD monitor, notebook and TV applications are expected to drop throughout January 2013 due to weak demand from downstream vendors, according to market observers. Panel makers were proactive in pushing sales routes throughout the second half of 2012 and were able to provide adequate supply to downstream vendors . But now the vendors are concerned about adjusting their supply and are preparing to launch new products throughout the year, which is expected to drop panel prices even further throughout January. IT panel prices are expected to drop US$0.50-1.50 while TV panels are expected to see one of the biggest drops at US$1-40, noted the observers. OLED Promoted by the display giants headed by Samsung and LG, OLED industry is still in the stage of steady development. In 2011, the OLED output value worldwide approximated USD3.3 billion, with year-on-year growth above 200%. The figure is expected to reach USD6.7 billion in 2012, rising by 102% from a year earlier. From the perspective of shipment, the shipment of OLED display panels around the globe reached 190 million pieces in 2012, with share in medium and small-sized display screens climbing up to 8.4%. The shipment of OLED screens for mobile phones around the globe registered 23 million pieces in 2009, and climbed up to 112 million pieces in 2011. OLED can be divided into AMOLED and PMOLED.
